the best remaining players are OJ Howard, , David Njoku, Corey Davis, Taco Charleton, John Ross and Takkarist McKinley. Who would you pick if we hadn't signed a starting WR, TE or DE in FA?
If we lost JPP I'd be tempted to take McKinley, who is a really good pass rusher and dazzled me every time I saw him. From CBSSportsline talking of his senior season:
career-highs in tackles (61), tackles for loss (18), sacks (10) and forced fumbles (three) over the regular season, dominating opponents with an explosive initial burst, bend off the corner and a relentless motor that projects very well to an increasingly pass-happy NFL. |
.
BUT, more and more I'm feeling that I'd select Howard there in most circumstances, even over Davis (who I think is outstanding). I feel that the offense will improve most dramatically (aside from developing a dominant OL) if we have a big threat who can go down the seams and force safeties to account for that.
Thoughts?
I don't feel like the TE position is worth a first rounder (unless your name is Graham or Gronk) and I don't know that McKinley or Charlton are SO special they have to be taken there.
he is an everydown work horse Foreman gives us power and
good speed . I wouldn't mind a TE and I think Its Time
we got one Jake Butt is kind of a freak thats gonna be
a mismatch against anyone .
I think they Keep JPP even at the expense of Hankins
Adam, good point, although I could say the same for WR; let's say we take Cooper Kupp in the 2nd, or a host of guys who should be available in the 3rd or later: Malachi Dupre, Zay Jones, Chris Godwin or Noah Brown for example. I'd rather get the dominant TE for certain than someone like Sheehan or Saubert later on. I really want those safeties to have to account for a TE (unlike Boss-type who do make an impact but aren't anything special).

because we can probably get a decent TE in 2 or 3. A playmaking big WR of the caliber of Davis is only going to be found in 1. If we could get Davis in 1 and then Leggett in 2, that would be amazing for our O.

I like Chris Godwin as a later pick. I think he and Eli could become a great match. Godwin seems heady. But, Davis is another level kind of guy, it seems like at least. I love Howard though and I think Davis is gone by 20. So, I'd love Howard, DL/OG/RB, DL/OG/RB, and Godwin over the first four. But, Davis might be a better player than Howard.
If you're of the mindset that Flowers is literally the worst Left Tackle in the league, and a lot of us are, then any LT will do.
Keep the D intact especially the 2ndary. The DL is where it gets tricky. Hankins over JPP due to shelf life and injury history if it comes to a one or the other type choice must be made. The smart move would be to place a tag on JPP that allows us to at least get a 2nd or 3rd for him to off-set the spanking. Then replace him with a draft pick (and hopefully Romeo takes another step and OO's light comes on and his health trends upward.
If we can accomplish that then we have some flexibility going into the draft we can go BPA at WR, TE, DE/LB rds 1 - 3.
That is most likely a true statement but let me say this; why is he starting?
I have been very critical in Flowers but Reese as well. My biggest problem has been the lack of competition. Nobody was ever brough in to give him a fight. Flowers never had to earn the position and that is my biggest gripe. He was just annoijted the starting LT. This year needs to be different. There needs to be a true competition and we need to put these players in the best position for the TEAM and not the best position for THEMSELVES. What I mean by that is Pugh may have to play LT. Maybe he is a better LG but he played a hell of a lot better in limited time at LT than Flowers ever had. Newhouse was also decent when he filled in at LG. Is it ideal? Absolutely not but the whole will be better than the sum of its parts. So, if Flowers has true competition and earns the spot then by all means let it happen. If it doesn't work they need a contingency plan because McAdoo seem allergic to helping his tackles particularly with chipping. I truly do not remember one chip all year.
I believe the defense is close to being elite level as a unit. They just need to add another pass rusher to the mix and maybe a stud MLB.
Howard would be a good pick. Njoku would be intriguing bc they could use him as a TE and as an outside WR. I'm just not sure any of those players could impact the entire offensive unit like McKinley could on defense. If a stud OT was available I'd lean that way -- but I just don't see it in this draft.
I think you're right. Flowers will likely be the starting LT next season. Fans should make peace with this and not get the vapors by time the draft concludes.
Third year. He plays every game. If you add talent to the right side of the ol and a bad ass TE and/or RB/WR any shortcomings at LT will be mitigated some. Can't force the issue. They don't grow LTs on trees.
I tend to agree. To the point that I'm thinking Njoku may be a solid pick up at #23 at this point. That guy does look like an offensive weapon from the TE spot. A U guy. Shockey was an exciting player in those early years. I'd like some Big Blue excitement to come from the TE for the first time in a while.
Do you think Njoku is a Gronk type of game changer?

2016 is over, and will not apply to 2017. I think there's going to be a lot of pissed off people when Flowers starts at LT week 1 next year.

Ummm....incorrect
Only reason why Flowers played LT in his rookie year is because Beatty got hurt
