Mark Gastineau: tests show he's at risk for Alzheimer's

Jints in Carolina : 1/19/2017 8:00 pm
Terrible news....

Jets all-time sacks leader Mark Gastineau told WOR Radio's Pete McCarthy that recent tests have shown he has signs of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease and dementia.

Gastineau, 60, made the comments during a 30-minute interview in which he talked about working with young players to reduce the number of head injuries in football, in addition to turning to religion and changing his lifestyle.

"It's disturbing to the point where I want to get out and I want to help other kids and youths coming into the game," said Gastineau, who played for 10 sesons. "There's techniques out there that if I would have had them, I know that I wouldn't have the results that I have now."

after he retired? That probably didn't help things after playing football for all those years.
He was on WFAN with Somers a couple of months ago...

He sounded like an absolute LUNATIC. It was actually uncomfortable to listen to.
Remember that interview with Sam Huff several years

him the best.
Gastineau admitted using steriods for his whole career.

There's reason to think juicing is not so great for the brain, either.

Hope the worst doesn't come to pass and he has a long, happy, healthy life ahead of him. But I'm not optimistic.
Huff is in his early 80s.

He also liked his alcohol. I'm sure football hasn't helped with the aging process, but there are other contributing factors both natural and self inflicted.
Strange article.

Seems to pretend that this isn't about CTE. Also pretends that there are techniques one can use to play competitive football that change risk of CTE. There is not yet one iota of proof that this is true.

I wish there were.

Consider the source...
The article mentions Gastineau boxed...

I remember hearing rumors about his steroid use.

I met him before a Giants-Jets preseason game - back when you could get tickets to those games without being a season ticket holder. He was incredibly gracious and friendly. He also clearly had groupies, which was funny for me as a preteen to see.
Hate to see anybody get sick.

He's likely a good guy off the field.

On the field however, he was the first I ever saw celebrate himself in over the top obnoxious fashion. A real look at me guy.

I'm sure to a degree. Gastineau was a bit before my time.. he was at his peak right when I was born. So I don't really recall what he was like in his 20's/early 30's.. all I know is I heard him on with Somers a few months back and the guy sounded like he was either SMASHED or was just absolutely looney.

It was scary. He sounded like a guy who had just totally lost his marbles.

Google it; he admitted to juicing for his entire pro career.
I met him once when I was twelve. He was really nice.

Right in the middle of the New York Sack Exchange hype. I was day camper at Joe Namath Football Camp in Hamden CT. I was walking and carrying my equipment from the camp to a friend's house where my Dad would pick me up. He pulled over in a mercedes and gave me a ride. Talked to me the whole way about what positions I played and told me to stick with it.

What was crazy was that I didn't even like him before that - I thought he was a jerk. He's had a crazy personal life but there's a good guy in there if he'll stop and give the fat kid with glasses a ride.

That's an awesome story.
Thanks!

if he did that today, a kid would call the cops concerning a potential child moleester.
I had the misfortune of hearing Boomer and Carton
jcn56 : 1/20/2017 4:13 pm : link
this AM when I hopped in the car to get some coffee. Boomer was going on and on about how Gastineau had engaged in various harmful behaviors (boxing, PEDs, drinking/partying) and how people don't question lifestyle/longevity when it comes to Hollywood but they do it to football players, mentioning Carrie Fisher specifically.

Now Boomer's a good test case - just naturally an idiot or too many blows to the head?
