(My first 5 picks)
With the 23rd pick, the New York Giants select ... Christian McCaffrey, running back, Stanford.
Sure, we have Paul Perkins, who looks like he'll pan out to some degree. But when the Giants were at their "recent" best running the football, they had a two-headed attack (Jacobs/Bradshaw).
McCaffrey helps with blocking ... he can catch the ball out of the backfield ... and he could be that "next" weapon that really spurs this offense.
+++
With the 55th pick, the New York Giants select ... Dion Dawkins, left tackle, Temple. Maybe a slight reach, but he could be NFL-ready, from what I'm reading. He also has some flexibility (could play guard).
My best-case is that the Giants are active in FA and sign a vet LT, allowing a kid like this to work into the mix.
+++
With the 87th pick, the New York Giants select ... tight end Bucky Hodges, Virginia Tech. Here's a kid who potentially poses serious match-up problems for defenses. He's said to be a decent blocker, and he's a huge target at 6-foot-7, 245 pounds.
(If he happens to be gone, there's a chance Jake Butt (Michigan) is there ... so you take him at 6-foot-6, 248.
+++
With the 140th pick, the New York Giants select ... defensive end Hunter Dimick from Utah. By most accounts, this kid is an old-school football player. Unless there's a much more attractive option at 140, this would be a solid pick, imo.
+++
And with the 168th pick, the New York Giants select ... Brad Seaton, offensive tackle, Utah. Decent prospect, and gives us another option.

Anyone else getting too excited for the draft way too early? Yeahhhh ...
Happy Friday, all!
2) Best TE or OL available, whichever grades out higher.
3) Best CB or S available, whichever grades out higher.
4) Dan Skipper OT Arkansas, 6'10" 325 lb. road grader, projected to play RT
5) Daniel Carlson. PK. The premier PK in this draft. 10+ year career choice here.
4.50 40 speed ... good hands ... burst ... smart.
Tell me you can't see him in an Edelman role with the NYG.

He's a good player. Just don't think he's value at 23.
Dawkins seems to have the tools but also reminds me of Flowers a little too much. Big, strong, nasty but needs technique work, loses focus at times, and is a waist-bender. He might be the best OT option in rd 2.
Hodges could be the best TE in the draft. He has a ton of upside but (like many other college TEs) wasn't utilized very much. He reminds me of a more polished Visanthe Shiancoe.
I'm not very familiar with the other two guys.
I'm not sure he'd be worth a #1.

lol, com'on. How well would an Edelman be in the a Giants offense?
This kid has New England written all over him. The rest, our Giants included, won't maximize his talents.

I can definitely see New England taking him at the end of the first round.
A great OL can make a mediocre running back into a great running back.
The opposite is never true.
I've had enough Butch Woolfolk, Jarrod Bunch, George Adams, Tyrone Wheatley, Ron Dayne, David Wilson for one lifetime.
Rodney Hampton aside, Giants have proven that it's never worth blowing a first rounder on a position that can easily be manned by later round picks.
Giants Career Rushing Leaders:
------------------------------
1. Tiki Barber (2nd Rd)
2. Rodney Hampton (1st rd)
3. Joe Morris (2nd Rd)
4. Brandon Jacobs (4th rd)
5. Alex Webster (11th rd)
6. Ahmad Bradshaw (7th rd)
Seems like every play in that video he had about 5-8 yards of freedom ahead of him when he touches the ball. What's he going to do in the NFL when that almost never happens...
I am so anti HB in Round 1 yet, for the first time ever, i would go HB and really enjoy watching Fournette in Giants blue. Love his style and hard to believe Jacobs was 30+lbs heavier.
I'm a big fan of Davin Cook, and much prefer him to Fournette.
Isn't Hodges basically a tall receiver though? Has he ever had to block at VT?
Projected as 2-3 ... never know when things shift and guys fall.

2nd rounder???

Yes. I want him as a WR, not a TE. 6' 7" huge wingspan, great red zone target.
I would say his height has to do more with his weight than his actual build. He basically looks like Mike Evans.
With all due respect, and hopefully a touch of reality, it is unlikely that a guy starting for Temple is "NFL ready." The level of competition jump is immense and makes ready to start unlikely.
Exactly, a 3rd down back...don't be so sure to judge on
the kid from Temple. I was cynical about a kid like
Ali Marpet? coming out from Div II or III, and he has proved
me wrong so far.
what the fuck does that have to do with it? He is a WR. Buress was 6'5" 226lbs, should he have been a TE too?
He is a 200 lb. back., not going to be a bellcow at the next
level. You get him 10-15 touches a game.
That is absurd to play a race card, grow up!
Quote:
with the Vereen/McCaffrey comparisons. McCaffrey basically does everything better than Vereen, and is a much better athlete. Vereen was a third down back coming out, and pretty much has stayed that.

Got it. So...LeSean McCoy? Melvin Gordon? Devonta Freeman? How those guys doing?
Quote:
people just think McCaffrey is a change of pace/third down back because he's white. If he were black, people would be talking about him being better than Fournette and Cook. He's that good.

I'm not playing the "race card" i'm literally just saying it's true. There's a stigma about white NFL backs. You seriously think there isn't? McCaffrey is an amazing running back.
Fourth year junior. Many are calling him a tight end but I am keeping him at WR because I haven’t seen him line up with his hands in the dirt once. He plays a WR role completely for the Hokies. I see a Kelvin Benjamin type with this kid. Moves well enough to be a WR and his size alone strikes fear in to anyone who covers him, and I mean anyone. Hodges is a little limited when it comes to the route tree but his impact will be felt early and often in the NFL if he comes out. Potential 1st rounder. 2nd rounder at worst.
Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan
DeMarcus Walker, DE, Florida State
Jordan Leggett, TE, Clemson
Chad Wheeler, OT, USC
Akhello Witherspoon, CB, Colorado
Jamaal Williams, RB, BYU
Greg Pyke, OG, Georgia
Edelman's replacement(dings accumulating) out of the Vereen mold.
I do not understand how people want to pick a RB (maybe) WR (maybe) with the 1st pick that will never be more than a role player in any capacity.
At least with Peppers you get a projected starter.
Huge NO to VT skill players.
And probably ten times better.
He's more of a slam dunk that Fournette to me. He still plays with top end speed despite the fact he's an every down back, who returns kickoffs and punts. He can block, catch the ball with the best of them, and he doesn't fumble the ball.
I'd be thrilled with him.

Love the first 3 picks.
I would like to see Donnel Pumphrey in blue, as a poor man's McCaffrey. He can be had in later rounds but has all the tools. He is just undersized, but plays a lot bigger than he is.
Some interesting information about Christian McCaffery;
“Shannon Turley, Stanford’s head strength and conditioning coach since 2007, said McCaffrey runs a 4.50 laser-timed 40, fastest of any running back to come through the program during his time there.”
McCaffrey’s position coach, Lance Taylor, spent four seasons in the NFL before joining Shaw’s staff last season stated;
“I’ve been around some great running backs — Shonn Greene in New York, DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart in Carolina,” he said. “All of those guys are great running backs, but I wouldn’t say all of those guys are great at multiple things. Christian is probably the best guy I’ve ever been around in terms of, anything you ask him to do, he does it well.”
McCaffrey’s grandfather (Lisa’s dad), David Sime, was a world-record sprinter who took silver at the 1960 Olympics in the 100 meter-dash. His uncle, Billy McCaffrey, played basketball at Duke and Vanderbilt in the early ‘90s. Lisa herself played soccer at Stanford. And his father, Ed – you may remember him as a former All-Pro receiver for the two-time Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos.
(and of course, the NY Giants)

I think Mcaffrey has a solid NFL future but I don't see him as a star or every down back. I don't expect him to post overly explosive numbers at the combine either relative to other options.

Name any 245-pound wide receiver who's had relative success in the ... no, I'll make it easier, who has PLAYED in the NFL?
THAT's what it has to do with it.

Kelvin Benjamin is doing alright

Only 243 pounds.
HA!
Letdown? He barely played until after Thanksgiving. You wanted rookie-of-the-year?
