Screw it. My 1st-rounder (and 2nd through 5th rounders) ...

Beezer : 1/20/2017 6:36 am
(My first 5 picks)

With the 23rd pick, the New York Giants select ... Christian McCaffrey, running back, Stanford.

Sure, we have Paul Perkins, who looks like he'll pan out to some degree. But when the Giants were at their "recent" best running the football, they had a two-headed attack (Jacobs/Bradshaw).

McCaffrey helps with blocking ... he can catch the ball out of the backfield ... and he could be that "next" weapon that really spurs this offense.

+++

With the 55th pick, the New York Giants select ... Dion Dawkins, left tackle, Temple. Maybe a slight reach, but he could be NFL-ready, from what I'm reading. He also has some flexibility (could play guard).

My best-case is that the Giants are active in FA and sign a vet LT, allowing a kid like this to work into the mix.

+++

With the 87th pick, the New York Giants select ... tight end Bucky Hodges, Virginia Tech. Here's a kid who potentially poses serious match-up problems for defenses. He's said to be a decent blocker, and he's a huge target at 6-foot-7, 245 pounds.

(If he happens to be gone, there's a chance Jake Butt (Michigan) is there ... so you take him at 6-foot-6, 248.

+++

With the 140th pick, the New York Giants select ... defensive end Hunter Dimick from Utah. By most accounts, this kid is an old-school football player. Unless there's a much more attractive option at 140, this would be a solid pick, imo.

+++

And with the 168th pick, the New York Giants select ... Brad Seaton, offensive tackle, Utah. Decent prospect, and gives us another option.

+++

Anyone else getting too excited for the draft way too early? Yeahhhh ...

Happy Friday, all!

I'd be happy with that draft - all solid and realistic picks

McCaffrey just replicates what you already have on the roster in Shane Vereen. If Vereen's injuries are career threatening I would reconsider.

With all due respect, and hopefully a touch of reality, it is unlikely that a guy starting for Temple is "NFL ready." The level of competition jump is immense and makes ready to start unlikely.
Bob, fair point about Vereen.
Beezer : 1/20/2017 8:01 am : link
But if McCaffrey is here, you get younger, faster and cheaper. Say goodbye to Vereen (who I was happen to have signed initially) and perhaps have more leeway with regard to FA O-linemen and/or tight ends.

Fair point about the Temple lineman, as well. If the Giants are active in FA, then the "NFL ready" aspect becomes moot, and you have what many believe is a very good prospect.
Maybe, but I'm Not a fan of HB at #1 b/c
Giants2012 : 1/20/2017 8:12 am : link
you can own the rights for five years. I'd rather tie up a position of higher cost after contract than lower. Meaning, the franchise tag for an HB is third least with safety and TE lower.

I guess it's good for cap management so long as the guy doesn't get injured. As of now it's kinda crazy paying Jennings and Vereen while Rainey and Perkins are getting carries and some still like Darkwa.
I personally can’t see the Giants Drafting a RB in the first
bigblue1124 : 1/20/2017 8:13 am : link
With all of the needs they have on the offensive side of the ball. In addition regarding your latest post it really does not make any sense drafting a prospect in the second round. The Giants history on players who are prospects has not fared well at all.

I am by NO means a draft guru nor do I partake in mock drafts just my 2 cent’s but thanks for sharing and the time you spent.
1124 ... no worries.
Beezer : 1/20/2017 8:17 am : link
I'm spit-balling more than most here, admittedly. My knowledge of college players is about 25% observation and 75% reading.

The only thing I'd say about "drafting a prospect at 2" is this: you just never know. Some of these "sure thing" picks fizzle quickly. Many, in fact. So often it tends to be the "lesser knowns" who emerge after a couple years.

My contingency for that Temple OL at 2 is predicated on what the Giants do/don't do wrt the O-line through FA. (And I hope they are active there.)
McCraffrey is clearly talented and versatile but
Jimmy Googs : 1/20/2017 8:20 am : link
is he a "weapon" at the NFL level?

I tend to think probably not, but maybe I havent seen him enough.
I realize he's a running back,
Beezer : 1/20/2017 8:31 am : link
but I could see him transitioning into a slot receiver in the NFL.

He has similar speed to Julian Edelman, and similar size. He also has better-than-Wes Welker speed, and that same shiftiness.

Could most certainly see him returning punts and kicks in blue next fall, and working into the offense in certain sets.

A potentially great weapon, in combo with an upgraded OL, OBJ, Perkins out of the backfield, Sheperd with a year under his belt, maybe a workmanlike TE.
It might be because he's white
Old Dirty Beckham : 1/20/2017 8:32 am : link

Second and third are okay
jeff57 : 1/20/2017 8:33 am : link
Butt's coming off a serious knee injury. So I wouldn't take him at 3. Don't know about McCaffery though.
McCaffrey doesn't excite me. I don't think he's a slam dunk star
Victor in CT : 1/20/2017 8:43 am : link
Definitely wouldn't spend a #1 on him
Since Free agency starts before the draft
Rjanyg : 1/20/2017 8:46 am : link
I'm more into wondering what players the Giants re-sign, cut or restructure and target in FA than what players they select in the NFL draft. But based in our needs these players seem decent.

I see Reese's approach this offseason similar to last year, but this time fixing the offense with 3 big signings and supplementing the defense through the draft. OL, WR, TE in free agency, re-sign JPP and Robinson then head to the draft. Just my opinion.
Mine.
No Where Man : 1/20/2017 8:46 am : link
1) Best OL or TE available, whichever grades out higher.
2) Best TE or OL available, whichever grades out higher.
3) Best CB or S available, whichever grades out higher.
4) Dan Skipper OT Arkansas, 6'10" 325 lb. road grader, projected to play RT
5) Daniel Carlson. PK. The premier PK in this draft. 10+ year career choice here.
Take a look at this ...
Beezer : 1/20/2017 8:47 am : link

4.50 40 speed ... good hands ... burst ... smart.

Tell me you can't see him in an Edelman role with the NYG.
Link - ( New Window )
McAffrey reminds me of Reggie Bush
BigBlueDownTheShore : 1/20/2017 8:49 am : link
Can do everything, but he's not a true everydown RB and he's not going to be as special in the NFL. He's going to be useful and a descent back, but he's not just going to come in and take the league by storm.
Also Bucky Hodges
BigBlueDownTheShore : 1/20/2017 8:50 am : link
Will be long gone before the third round. He'll get picked in the 2nd rd for sure. If he's there in the third that's a great value pick.

He's a good player. Just don't think he's value at 23.
I like the first
Pete in MD : 1/20/2017 8:55 am : link
three picks. McCaffrey at worst is a change of pace/3rd down back who can also return kicks and at best he's a feature RB. He's also a gym rat with a high football IQ. Worth the gamble IMO.

Dawkins seems to have the tools but also reminds me of Flowers a little too much. Big, strong, nasty but needs technique work, loses focus at times, and is a waist-bender. He might be the best OT option in rd 2.

Hodges could be the best TE in the draft. He has a ton of upside but (like many other college TEs) wasn't utilized very much. He reminds me of a more polished Visanthe Shiancoe.

I'm not very familiar with the other two guys.
McAffrey
prh : 1/20/2017 8:58 am : link
It will be interesting to see how the Giants and other teams value him. His refusal to participate in a bowl game might be a red flag for teams. Especially when it comes to his contract expiring. Will he sit out, play, dog it?
I'm not sure he'd be worth a #1.

lol, com'on. How well would an Edelman be in the a Giants offense?

This kid has New England written all over him. The rest, our Giants included, won't maximize his talents.

...I'll never support a 1st rd Running Back pick again.

A great OL can make a mediocre running back into a great running back.

The opposite is never true.

I've had enough Butch Woolfolk, Jarrod Bunch, George Adams, Tyrone Wheatley, Ron Dayne, David Wilson for one lifetime.

Rodney Hampton aside, Giants have proven that it's never worth blowing a first rounder on a position that can easily be manned by later round picks.

Giants Career Rushing Leaders:
------------------------------
1. Tiki Barber (2nd Rd)
2. Rodney Hampton (1st rd)
3. Joe Morris (2nd Rd)
4. Brandon Jacobs (4th rd)
5. Alex Webster (11th rd)
6. Ahmad Bradshaw (7th rd)
I'd take Dalvin Cook our Fournette

Seems like every play in that video he had about 5-8 yards of freedom ahead of him when he touches the ball. What's he going to do in the NFL when that almost never happens...

I am so anti HB in Round 1 yet, for the first time ever, i would go HB and really enjoy watching Fournette in Giants blue. Love his style and hard to believe Jacobs was 30+lbs heavier.

I think McCaffrey would fit perfectly in the Patriot offense,

Yes. I want him as a WR, not a TE. 6' 7" huge wingspan, great red zone target.

Exactly, a 3rd down back...don't be so sure to judge on

with the Vereen/McCaffrey comparisons. McCaffrey basically does everything better than Vereen, and is a much better athlete. Vereen was a third down back coming out, and pretty much has stayed that.

I'm not playing the "race card" i'm literally just saying it's true. There's a stigma about white NFL backs. You seriously think there isn't? McCaffrey is an amazing running back.
This is kind of shocking to me
ryanmkeane : 1/20/2017 10:11 am : link

here is Sy56's write up on Hodges:
Victor in CT : 1/20/2017 10:15 am : link
*#7 WR Bucky Hodges – 6’7/245

Fourth year junior. Many are calling him a tight end but I am keeping him at WR because I haven’t seen him line up with his hands in the dirt once. He plays a WR role completely for the Hokies. I see a Kelvin Benjamin type with this kid. Moves well enough to be a WR and his size alone strikes fear in to anyone who covers him, and I mean anyone. Hodges is a little limited when it comes to the route tree but his impact will be felt early and often in the NFL if he comes out. Potential 1st rounder. 2nd rounder at worst.

I do not understand how people want to pick a RB (maybe) WR (maybe) with the 1st pick that will never be more than a role player in any capacity.

At least with Peppers you get a projected starter.
