"Orr became one of the defenses most impactful players and put himself in position to earn a lucrative restricted free agent contract tender this offseason.
But in a cruel development, Orr is now dealing with a congenital neck condition that will end his career, according to multiple sources." Link - ( New Window )
Tom Perry a All-American LB out of Colorado who went undrafted, but decided against it...because it is a LB this reminded me of that story from years ago, not to mention RB David Wilson and others...
Code:
"Before Oct. 22, Perry was a top collegiate linebacker 6 feet 3 inches, 238 pounds and a consistent 4.8-second time for the 40‐yard run. On Oct. 22, while playing the weak side for the University of Colorado, he was hit hard on the head by a Nebraska player, a sort of whiplash, Perry said. The linebacker was removed from the game for one play, checked on the sideline and sent hack in lie played the rest of the game, but afterward he began to feel nauseated.
Perry was rushed to an Omaha hospital and underwent a 2-hour-l5minute operation. A blood vessel had ruptured in his brain. Doctors said he should never play football again. He was passed over in the N.F.L. draft ; 334 other players were chosen. Perry went to see other doctors...Perry tried the Oakland Raiders. Ommaya's report apparently was satisfactory to Oakland, but the Raiders contract offer was not satisfactory to Perry. He wanted to be paid as if he were a first‐round draft choice.
It was then that the Giants became interested. Perry, as a free agent, could be like an extra first‐round draft pick, if he had medical clearance. Jim Trimble, the Giants director of pro personnel, heard about Perry's visit to the Raiders and called his home in Boulder, Colo. Last week, Perry was invited to the team's camp here. He brought with him his medical clearance. It was not good enough for the Giants. They sent him back to get hospital reports, x‐ray pictures, everything concerning his injury."
That really sucks, to have worked so hard for something all your life, only to have it taken away after you just started reaping the rewards. Hopefully he has a healthy and successful life outside of football.
