John Stewart is a much better character to bring to life on the big screen. Idris Elba or Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr (Common) would be perfect for that role.
Even Guy Gardner is a better choice than Hal (Michael Rosenbaum would be a nice choice there, he can pull off being obnoxious, smart-ass, but likable). Ideally, you'd have both!

It must be hard work being an asshole about stuff you don't care about all the time. Why not invest some of that energy into something you actually ARE a fan of.
