Off season scenario

Rjanyg : 1/21/2017 1:54 pm
Question: for you all. I am going to present 2 scenarios for you. Pick which one you would prefer. I'm basing the scenarios on 2 current Giants: JPP and Hankins, with NYG signing only one of them to a new deal as I feel re-signing both will inhibit the signing of some offensive talent. I will not speculate dollar amounts, just what I feel is possible based on perceived market.

Here we go!

Scenario #1
Re-sign JPP to multi year extension.
Sign OG TJ Lang to multi yr deal
Sign RB Robert Turbin 1yr deal
Re-sign Kelvin Sheppard 1 yr deal
Restructure Cruz contract to $3 mill ( 4.5 million reduction )
Cut Rashad Jennings and JT Thomas

Draft TE OJ Howard from Alabama in round 1 of 2017 draft

Look to draft for more OL help, DT and WR

Scenario #2
Re-sign Jonathan Hankins to multi yr extension
Sign OG Ron Leary to multi yr deal
Sign OT Andrew Whitworth to 2 year deal
Sign WR Brian Quick to multi year deal
Sign Jack Doyle to 3 year deal
Sign Julius Peppers to one yr deal
Re-sign Keenan Robinson to 3 yr deal

Cut Cruz, Jennings and JT Thomas

Draft DE Taco Charlton from Michigan in round 1 of 2017 draft

Look to draft more RB, OL in rest of draft
#2, but no to Peppers.

I like #2 more, but I agree with Doc

No Peppers

Is it because of his age? He has had a decent season this year and is playing OLB, he is more of a 4-3 DE and should have one more food season in him.

Yes, his age and, if we do have anything moving forward with Okwara and OO, I'd prefer they not have their snaps reduced or greatly reduced by a 1 year signing

I get you. I guess I'm thinking more of a veteran presence if OV were to miss any time. We kept 5 DE on the active roster in 2016 and I'm assuming we would do the same this year: OV, Okwara, OO, Charlton and Peppers would be solid and a good rotation.
Of the two choices
micky : 1/21/2017 2:50 pm : link
I'd go with #2.

I believe you keep Hankins
I believe Hankins is equated to Linval Joseph on this site
Bob in Newburgh : 1/21/2017 2:53 pm : link
He is not. IMHO Joseph is the qualitatively superior player.

Signing both (JPP+JH) should be a priority but not to the extent of blocking other moves. If you cannot sign both, assuming no lingering health issues on the hernia, JPP is the more critical keeper.

This is a business where compensation must bear some kind of relationship to value. Sign that maybe this team gets it are to sever ties with Cruz and players like Herzlich. If you need a mantra to hang your hat on, we need to improve team speed.
I'd say # 2 definitely, however,
Simms11 : 1/21/2017 3:06 pm : link
I suppose this also assumes BJ Goodson as the starting MLB since Sheppard would not be re-signed?
I won't choose one scenario but will instead...
Torrag : 1/21/2017 3:32 pm : link
...weigh in on all options.

Start with any OG that is an upgrade to John Jerry is a welcome addition. There are going to be some available in free agency and the draft. As long as that useless run blocking turd isn't starting it's a win for the fans and more importantly for Eli.

Yes to Robert Turbin. He can be an effective complementary piece with Perkins and has a lot more in the tank than Jennings at this stage. That said I think it will take a minimum 2 year commitment to sign him.

No to re-signing Kelvin Sheppard. It's Goodson's job going forward and the money can be spent better elsewhere.

Thanks for the memories Victor. He's done. Don't want him on the roster any more.

Yes cut Jennings and Thomas.

Worry about the draft after free agency plays out. Let the board come to us. Don't chase positions, instead draft into the talent pools strength. This is a strategic philosophy to the draft I think the Giants have failed to take advantage of in years past.

As far as Hankins and the DT options it's an incredibly strong free agent position this year. Maybe the best in history. Let the market set the price. It could end up saving us valuable cap dollars down the road. I'd prefer the homegrown option but as long as Snacks has a bona fide running mate I'm good.

Signing Whitworth would be my #1 goal in free agency. It would be akin to the Lomas Brown signing by the Rug. Provides an instant upgrade at LT and allows us to continue to develop Flowers. It could sting his pride and spark his work ethic which increasing rumor suggest isn't good.

Rather than invest in Quick I'd approach Kenny Stills. His development as a red zone threat is one of the traits this offense is lacking. He has some glaring drops but statistically he has good hands. The arrow is pointing up on him imo.

Not interested in Jack Doyle per se. First of all his club is flush with cap room so he'll be overpriced to pry away from them. Second this is the draft class to land a TE. Very good talent into the middle rounds.

Yes to re-signing Keenan Robinson. For years TE's and RB's have gutted us on third down conversions. He quietly shut that down. Three year term is perfect. Allows us to spread the bonus money out.

If our FO handles Phase Two of this roster rebuild as well as they handled Phase One we could be hoisting a Lombardi Trophy yet again this time next year. Granted we don't have $180 million to throw around but we have enough in the bank to do what needs to be done.

Nice Post. Well thought out
I vote with Torrag - except
Ivan15 : 1/21/2017 4:56 pm : link
Make a run at JPP first.

Make LT a free agent priority. If they find a LT, and can't steal a RG from somewhere, they can let at least 5 guys fight it out for RG and RT.
I think scenario 2 is less fiscally possible than 1
adamg : 1/21/2017 5:19 pm : link
I also don't know why you sub out Robinson for Sheppard in 1 without adding the need of another LB in the draft. Sheppard is useless at this point. Goodson is the presumed Mike. Might as well keep Robinson and have Kennard, Casillas, Robinson, and Goodson hold it down. Maybe a 5-7 rounder in the LB too, preferably a pure Will. But, we need to bring back Robinson unless they have other ideas for coverage LBs.

In 2, you have 3 guys in 7-9 mill range. 4 guys in the 3-6 mill range. Assuming the cheapest that's 21 mill + 12 mill = 33 mill. That's a close call with ~13 mill extra in cuts on top of our 24 mill in space (you're assuming 37 mill in space with cuts?). It's very optimistic about the cap. Plus, you're not leaving cap room to re-sign Kennard, Richburg, or Odell next year. And maybe not even enough for draft picks.

Vereen coming off next year won't cover those three, even if you cut DRC and get another 6.5 for 2018.

I think 1 is the better idea. But I'd switch Leary with Lang. Switch Robinson with Sheppard. Switch Quick with Cruz. And not signing Turbin. I don't know why his name is here.
adios

I don't know about scenario one vs. two
aquidneck : 1/21/2017 7:25 pm : link
But let's start by prioritizing in FA our own best player: JPP.

Agree. Especially if we're drafting a DE. I think Peppers hasn't done that much in Green Bay and is basically done.

WillVAB : 1/21/2017 8:18 pm : link
But I wouldn't sign Quick, Doyle, or Peppers. Wouldn't draft Taco either.

Leary and Whitworth would be overpaid but not by much relative to their values. The other 3 could be crippling.

Go into the draft targeting pass rushers and impact offensive guys early. Draft depth and developmental types late.

1. Takk McKinley
2. David Njoku
3. TJ Watt
4. Chad Wheeler

Option 1.
est1986 : 1/21/2017 8:52 pm : link
Although I don't like the draft pick.
Thanks for all your thoughts
Rjanyg : 1/21/2017 10:49 pm : link
I posed these 2 different scenarios with the idea that signing JPP to a long term deal, while optimal, will limit our activity in free agency, but I gave players I think would fit under the cap. I think Hankins will come much cheaper than JPP and would allow better ability to sign to FA OL, plus keep Robinson and potentially add a couple targets.

I believe as much as I want JPP to return, scenario 2 brings in the most talent and allows for the adding of a pass rusher in the draft.
Adding Robert turbin
djm : 1/22/2017 12:01 pm : link
Doesn't help out anemic rushing attack. Perkins and turbin is subpar.

Can we devote some actual resources to the rb position for the first time in 5 years? Enough already.

Thanks, Bob, well said.
I'm surprised to see so many fans advocating
djm : 1/22/2017 1:35 pm : link
The signing of a notable or high profile FA WR. Stills is just that. Not questioning what he would bring but any wr like stills or jones/ Sanu last year is going to cost a lot. I get the philososphy of turning a strength into a dominant unit but the Giants have so many other fish to fry on offense. They also just spent a second round pick on Shepard plus they have Beckham to re-sign sooner than later. It's just not a position screaming for heavy financial resources right now but OL, TE and RB most definitely are. Plus, the Giants love drafting WRs and they are good at drafting WRs. WRs cost way too much in FA while rbs can and will sneak under the radar which amazes me, the position is so critical. The packers will lose today because they will be outclassed at the position. Just watch.

Nyg need to spend the FA money on the anemic running game. It's the clear cut number one problem with this team and has been for far too long. Fix it.
Draft pass rushers
djm : 1/22/2017 1:37 pm : link
Pass catchers and pass defenders while mixing in the other positions when it's warranted.

This why I think Charlton makes sense if JPP leaves. Brian Quick might not be that expensive to sign. I would prefer to draft a TE on day 2.
