"In hands inside, the blocker’s first move is a straight-ahead punch and grab toward the middle of the pass rusher’s chest. The breast-plate aiming point has been pre-eminent since 1978, when offensive linemen were first permitted to extend their hands in pass protection. In hands outside, the blocker’s first move is the outward thrust of the hands toward the outside of his opponent’s shoulders. “The Packers throw their hands on the sides of everybody’s shoulders,” said an NFL offensive line coach. “It looks like they just clamp their hands on the outside. You’re not grabbing the jersey. It doesn’t look like it’s truly holding. They just get in front of you. They’re good at it.” |

In Campen’s meeting room, it’s often said that “once your feet are beat, that’s holding.”

A good coach?

I like the fact he adjusts to what the players are good at. Thought of Flowers when I read this:

D'oh! Campen.
A good coach?
The idea is
#1 Don't horse-collar anybody
#2 Don't throw anybody to the ground, unless you pancake them
There's surely a whole-lot more that the ignorant fan like me doesn't begin to know ....

In the past, most anyone who filled in for Rodgers did pretty well
Possibly, an issue with Flowers is that he seems to not trust his balance.
I recall some bloke I met as kid who raced Ducati. Asked me what is the most important part of a racing bike, 'the engine?' (no)...'the tires?' (no).
Its the frigging breaks, and for huge linesmen, that means balance.
Big, huge guys like flowers need to know that is they body smash some DE, that they can bounce back and maintain position, slide, move what have you immediately after, it balalnce.
Good news is that balance can be improved, I am thinking if techniques used by circus performers, surfers, tightrope walkers, rock climbers.
But yes, great link in that its a technique and the GB coach allows each player to use both inside and outside depending on his own aptitudes and body type.
I have ranted that OL positions are not hierarchical (some play better OT than guard by far and some its visa versa, each player being a unique individual). Same goes with technique probably.

and was roundly dashed, I am by the same token not ready to say that Flowers 'will never play OT in the NFL.'
That's just as crazy as some of the same posters, last year at this time, ('Flowers is the OLT come hell or high water as told to me by Jesus himself, so fuck off') type comments.
It is entirely possible, that with great training (starting now probably) that he eventually becomes a great ORT.
