NFT: I need some Windows 7 assistance

Jints in Carolina : 1/23/2017 4:15 pm
My laptop was installing some updates and apparently one of the updates did not install correctly and now I am stuck with the following:

Failure configuring windows updates reverting changes

I let this run overnight and nothing...it's just stuck there and I cannot get to the welcome screen. It is just an endless loop.

I have tried safe mode as well and the same thing occurs. I am trying to reset the laptop using Shift F11 but it will not let me. Also have tried to do startup repair and last known good configuration and still nothing.

Any suggestions?

You probably need to do a repair via booting from your Windows 7 System Repair CD.

Repair - ( New Window )
turn the machine off

brilliant
You'll need to do a Manual restore of the registry from it's backup

Manual restore of the registry from Backup Link

This presumes that you can get to a command prompt when you use your system restore disk.

If you can't, then you might want to create a usb boot disk from either Linux (I like Linux Mint XFCE 64 bit) or Hirem. You may need to change settings in the bios or hit one of the function keys to boot from USB.

The advantage of using a boot CD or boot USB is that you can copy your data over to another USB Flash Drive or USB Hard Drive, then re-install Windows, if the registry repair does not work.

To burn the iso to a USB, I like Rufus, it burns iso's once installed on another Windows PC. Or you can burn a boot DVD via Windows on another PC.

Good Luck!

Microsoft screwed up one of the updates. I ran into the same problem a few weeks ago.

Go to www.sevenforums.com/ for guidance.

On ongoing basis, select notify me before installing updates.
Yep, the Quality Control Department at MS sucks these days

Probably because of staffing cuts. This can certainly happen with Windows 10, check this article out:

Windows 10 updates problems

Seriously, keep backups current. A lot of responses from MS involve full system restores!

Or go to the dark side and run Linux!
Thanks all!
