NFT: recent surprisingly good movies

santacruzom : 2/9/2017 7:31 pm
Desperate to ween my son off his Zootopia addiction (which is far from a bad movie, but 50 viewing should suffice), I browsed through iTunes and spotted Pete's Dragon. I checked out the trailer and said, "Holy shit, is that Robert Redford?" So we pulled the trigger.

Wow, that movie was way better than I expected! It gets a bit conventional at its climax, but prior to that it has an unusually understated, poetic, evocative feel... kind of like Where The Wild Things Are. And the song choices are very surprising -- it may be the only movie to include "So Long Marianne" by Cohen.

Worth a look.
How old

Some of it was bit on the heavy/sad side for him initially, but he liked it.

I could've started this thread tonight.

First off Zootopia is one of the best animated films out there. My 2 year old was heavy into it for a few months and I've enjoyed every viewing.

Here is a huge surprise for you - check out Storks.

I saw the trailer and thought it was going to be horrible and the movie is the exact opposite. It is a really excellent film. I promise you won't be disappointed.

A kid movie. It's just that Pete's Dragon was a quality movie in its own right, which stunned me.

And yeah

Zootopia is the shit. The DMV scene alone features more inspired comedy than you'll find in every Hangover movie combined.

to watch Central Intelligence with The Rock. I figured stupid, formulaic movie that would be like nails on chalkboard for two hours.

Granted, it wasn't Citizen Kane, but it was very entertaining and good for a few laughs. Not putting it in the 'very good' category, but it was fun and a huge surprise for me, I went in expecting close to zilch and was surprisingly entertained.
I read the premise of that movie

And it actually sounded pretty clever.

Same thing here. I had no desire to see it, but it was pretty funny. The Rock was perfect for that role.
santa agreed on Pete's Dragon...

was very good in a totally unexpected way...
You guys do know

It's a remake of a 70s version of Petes Dragon which I loved as a kid.
Here's one that's family friendly

"The Magic of Belle Isle"

Yes, which only enhanced my surprise. The original sucks if you're older than 8.

I second that emotion re Hotel Transylvania -- both are just really damn funny and entertaining. I otherwise hate Adam Sandler but he was fantastic. Was actually working (and hysterical), harder than he needed to. Had no idea who it was him till I read the credits. "You're killing me, Blobby."

I thought Rango was pretty good. Same thing -- Johnny Depp doing more than anyone might have expected and he's great.

I think all the Madagascar movies are a scream. John Malkovich has a good turn in one of them. "Drew, Barry, more power." "Nicholas, cage them." Shit's still funny.

my 3 year old daughter to moana and it was surprisingly entertaining. the animation was phenomenal and while there were some derivatives from other Disney stories, it's not a typical princess love story.

Damn, thanks for the recommendation.

Huge rotten tomatoes rating.
Zootopia

is the best animated movie since "Up", in my opinion. Between the message it sends, the animation, and its ability to appeal to kids (moreso for Zootopia) and adults, it was a homerun for me. My daughter is 17 months and I can't wait to watch it with her when shes a little older.

My wife has been dying to see it and it finally releases on Blu Ray on Tuesday. We are staying in on Valentines Day so i'll probably incorporate the movie with dinner since I believe is on demand with Amazon.
It's a couple of years old,

but I thought Big Hero 6 was a pretty good movie. At first I was like what is this big puffy michelin man looking thing all about. Then I watched it and was pleasantly surprised.
