NFT: Yankees talk 2/10

Dunedin81 : 2/10/2017 8:37 am
A lot of chatter these last few days. Players are starting to report to camp. Severino is throwing a side session today I think. Mateo is taking grounders at 3B, among other spots. There is video of Judge BP without a leg kick, part of his effort to really cut down on the K's.

Cashman was on with Mike Francessa yesterday. Among the many things he talked about, he said Kaprielian has a shot to make the majors this year if healthy. Also said Andujar should be at SWB. That sort of aggressiveness suggests they really may view him as the 3B of the future rather than just a lotto ticket.

Also questions about what Carter's signing will mean. Austin could end up in AAA, he could fight for a chance to platoon in right with Hicks and/or Judge, Bird could go down to reset his service clock, we will see. Also even a single injury could render all of that moot.

also noted that Cashman told Carter to expect a limited role.

When they signed Carter
mavric : 2/10/2017 8:52 am : link
I came to the conclusion (at least in my own mind), that Austin would probably go down to AAA and Carter would platoon with Bird. Carter would probably only take the field when facing left handed pitching and would probably be pulled as soon as the Yanks had a lead in order to put Bird in for his glove. The other role I see Carter having is an occasional pinch hitter late in games or to spell Holliday if he gets hurt or needs a day off for any reason.

It will be interesting to see who steps up in Spring training as there's always a surprise or two. My gut feeling is that Chance Adams will have such a good Spring that he'll snag a starting role when the season begins. That means nothing. Just my personal hunch.
I know that Gleyber Torres is our SS of the future

But I want Didi to have a monster year t drive up his trade value for next year.

I like Didi but Torres is the future.
I should have added to my previous post

that I also think Carter was being brought in as trade bait for robbing other teams of their farm talent. Once the trade deadline nears, teams in the running will be looking to add a strong bat or arm to their contending team and are extremely vulnerable for letting their farm stars go for a shot at the big trophy. I wouldn't be a bit surprised that's what the Yanks were thinking when they signed Carter. If so, that's a pretty sneaky strategy.

Yes, but I wouldn't expect a big return. Carter almost ended up in Japan. Now, if he is able to establish value with the power we know he has, maybe they can get a decent prospect back at best. My guess is that it's more likely Carter spends the year in this platoon situation, and depending on how the season goes, he would get DFA'ed before anything. This was a no lose, minimal risk, decent reward signing by the Yankees.
Just saw this article
Beer Man : 2/10/2017 9:29 am : link
where MLB is testing a new rule, at the lowest level of the minors, in an attempt to speed up games. Essentially, once a game reaches extra innings a runner is automatically placed on 2nd base at the start of the extra inning for each team. Meaning each extra inning would start off with no outs and a runner on second. I'm not sure I like this.

Carter isn't going to reestablish value...
Dunedin81 : 2/10/2017 10:47 am : link
because he doesn't really have value. At $3.5 he's a bargain financially, but he doesn't have significant trade value because those sorts of guys are out of favor at present. It's not like his performance dipped, he was on par with career norms.
RAB's not Top 30

A remarkable list with a number of names who would be on a Top 30 in a normal year.

Oh, I don't know. Todd Frazier (30yrs old, .225/40HR/98RBI) got 12 million a year from the White Sox.
Compare with Christ Carter (30yrs old, .222/41/94)

When trade deadline near the end date and a team is lacking one piece (a RH slugger), there could be some trade value...especially if he's had a solid first half of the season. Hard to know how things will shake out in mid season. Either way, it's a bargain price for a guy who can come off the bench and occasionally break a game wide open.
Frazier is a decent 3B and a career .250 hitter...
Dunedin81 : 2/10/2017 1:09 pm : link
.225 is an aberration. He also steals bases. Carter is lead-footed, plays 1B, and is a career .218 hitter. His BA last year was not an aberration.
RAB's Top 30...

Looks like Yancarlos Baez is going to be on the mound this season. #Yankees #MiLB

Baez was a defense-first SS who topped out at .235 in the GCL and hit less than his weight last year. Will be interesting to see what he can do.
Stupid question about the stupid rule proposal
Ron from Ninerland : 2/10/2017 3:41 pm : link
If a team had a perfect game going through nine innings of a 0-0 tie, and if in the tenth inning the "mandatory" runner at second scores with out the pitcher allowing a base runner and the team goes on to lose 1-0, does it still count as a perfect game ?
It really is unbelievable how deep the system has gotten
Greg from LI : 2/10/2017 3:43 pm : link
in such a short time. Five years ago the guys in the 20s could have been top 10.

yeah ... even some guys in the 30s look like they are real prospects. RAB is doing some good profiles of these guys.
I've been following the farm closely for awhile...
Dunedin81 : 2/10/2017 4:58 pm : link
and it was a pretty good, pretty underrated system for the last two years. But this is a whole different level entirely. Guys with a strong likelihood of reaching the bigs and staying there, guys like Thairo Estrada, are in the 20's. Guys with impact tools, like Dermis Garcia, are there too. And guys who could end up stars, like Domingo Acevedo, are in the teens.
My hope is that many of these guys pan out.

You'd think that just the law of averages would say that's gonna happen.
