There's really no way to pick 1 album or song. I'll try to go with a handful
Caress of Steel/The Necromancer
A Farewell to Kings/Xanadu + Cygnus X-1
Permanent Waves/Natural Science
Signals/Subdivisions
Grace Under Pressure/Between the Wheels
Presto/Available Light
Snakes & Arrows/Armor & Sword
Clockwork Angels/Clockwork Angels
so many more I want to list. Fuck this thread.
let me try the Rush game:
Fly By Night - By-Tor
Caress - Bastille Day
2112 - 2112
Farewell - Cygnus
Hemispheres - Circumstances
Waves - entre nous
Moving Pictures - Witch Hunt!!!
Signals - The Weapon!!
Grace - (all of it!) The Enemy Within (see a trend?)
Power Windows - Marathon
HYF - Turn The Page
(skip a few)
Counterparts - Between The Sun & Moon
S&A - Workin Them Angels
Clockwork - Headlong Flight
phew
This is kind of a revolving door for me. Currently
Flaming Lips- The Soft Bulletin- Feeling Yourself Disintegrate
And I gotta add a second, I'd call them my favorite of the past year or slightly longer
The Amazing- Gentle Stream- Gentle Stream
If Nick Drake played in a full band that featured 3 incredibly talented guitarists it would've sounded like the folk-psych progg awesomeness that is The Amazing.
Opening chord still gives me chills after 50+ years
That's such an unorthodox opening chord for what's probably dismissed as a dated, conventional pop song these days. An F9 chord, with the bass playing a D?

Not really unorthodox at all. Harrison said he played an F add 9 (not F9). With a D in the bass, it's a D-11 (without the 9th). Maybe that's not so common in a pop song, but minor 11th chords were around way before The Beatles.
Fly By Night - In The End
Moving Pictures - The Camera Eye
Signals - The Analog Kid & Countdown
Hold Your Fire - Prime Mover
Presto - Available Light
Clockwork Angels - The Garden

Clockwork Angels - The Garden
Yeah, fuck this thread! lol
just think..The Garden is probably the last song on the last Rush album ever...
but hard to beat:
Rudie Can't Fail
Lost in the Supermarket
Death or Glory
Train in Vain
not to mention London Calling, Clampdown, Spanish Bombs, Revolution Rock, etc. London Calling is probably the greatest album ever made.
second best is probably:
Bruce Springteen: Born to Run: cover to cover: Thunder Road, Tenth Avenue Freeze Out, Night, Backstreets, Born to Run, She's the one, Meeting Across the River, Jungleland
Some other trifectas:
Rush Moving Pictures: Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, Limelight
Pavement crooked rain, crooked rain: Cut Your Hair, Gold Soundz, Range Life
"In Good Company" soundtrack or various compilation albums.
Trapeze Swinger.
It's also on his compilation Around the Well. Great mix of his early stripped down, sparse work and his more recent full band stuff. Sam Beam just might be the best songwriter of this generation. It's like Southern Gothic lit put to music.
Wait a minute... that's not even the best track by the band! In fact, that's not even the best track on that album. In fact, that's not even the best track on that disk of that album. In fact, that's not even the best track on that side of that disk of the album.
Good one... man, that album is fucking great.

The Velvet Underground, Beginning to See the Light, The Velvet Underground
Tom Petty, Flirting with Time, Highway Companion
Good call. Many songs to choose from on that album. Sweet Virgina maybe for me.
There are some pretty good live versions also
Theme From An Imaginary Western
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Sublime - 40 oz to Freedom

Sublime - 40 oz to Freedom
Soul to squeeze wasn't on mother's milk. at least I don't think so. I think it came out much later, like after Blood sugar sex magic.

MJK is a Rock Legend. Nothing since has even come close.
Tool - Latralus - Parabol > Parabola
The Gourds - Ghosts of Hallelujah - Bean Bowl > My Time,
Yer Time > Son of Bum
Die Young Stay Pretty
Impossible question, current answer.
Any song
But lately
Counting out time
Colony of slippermen
The Lamia
Lucky
Perfect
For me it's either:
Dylan: Tangled Up In Blue, Simple Twist of Fate, and You're a Big Girl Now
or
Janes Addiction: Been Caught Stealing, Three Days, and Then She Did, which is actually part of an awesome 1-2-3-4 punch if you also count Obvious.
Pink Floyd The Wall:
In the flesh?
The thin ice
Another brick in the wall part 1
Trapeze Swinger.
Eulogy
Areosmith ROCKS is in my Top 10 All time...but for me the best track is 'Combination'....
As for my favorite...has to be Steely Dan...Royal Scam...Green Earrings...
I like your thinking Giants86!
So many great ones on the thread!

Heh, I used to listen to them when I was a lot younger.. I've never even heard that album though. I fell off after Follow the Leader.
I loved the S/T album and Life is Peachy when I was in HS though.
Magnificent Seven

Your Welcome.................
Yes, Tales from Topographic Oceans, The Revealing Science of God
or
Gentle Giant, Free Hand, Free Hand
song- depends but Kid Charlemagne is great.
Great choice. Arguably the greatest guitar solo Larry Carlton ever recorded (and he's had a ton of great ones).
Sprawl II
