Not really unorthodox at all. Harrison said he played an F add 9 (not F9). With a D in the bass, it's a D-11 (without the 9th). Maybe that's not so common in a pop song, but minor 11th chords were around way before The Beatles.

It's also on his compilation Around the Well. Great mix of his early stripped down, sparse work and his more recent full band stuff. Sam Beam just might be the best songwriter of this generation. It's like Southern Gothic lit put to music.
