NFT: So, I guess Ray Kroc was a real douchebag.

Beezer : 2/10/2017 1:24 pm
Watched "Founder" (starring Michael Keaton as Kroc).

Good film. A story I did not know, fully.

If the depiction is accurate, one more reason to hate McDonald's.

I wonder if the movie is hurting sales at all. Then again, how could you hurt such a monster?

Just ... yuck. All of it.

Yeah

Keaton was great though.
Best part of the Kroc story
GmeninPSL : 2/10/2017 1:34 pm : link
was the Millions of dollars his wife donated! But in all fairness the McDonald Brothers moved at a snails pace and without Kroc they would have been a California based Burger stand at best!!
The question is how accurate it really is

That's a question I can't answer. I'm sure Kroc was no angel, but when was the last time Hollywood portrayed a businessman in anything but a negative light.

Really enjoyed the movie.

I thought the Steve Jobs movie (the 2013 Kutcher version) was garbage, and I loved the Isaacson book.

I didn't even see the Steve Jobs movie, but I know they didn't portray him in a negative light.

I really don't love seeing movies about a story a I already know (movies based on non-fiction) like Lincoln, Titanic, Steve Jobs, step brothers, etc.

He really did say (and think) that. Kroc never had any interest in helping his competitors at all -- that is, he didn't want to participate in restaurant industry associations. And he was obsessed with McDs.

If you want to read an accurate account of Ray Kroc's interactions with the McDonald brothers, check out the chapter on it in "The Fifties" by the late David Halberstam (who was a NY Giants fan). While Kroc did clash with the McDonalds (and screwed them on royalties), they knew of Kroc before they met him, and they were looking to franchise.

The book highlighted both the positive and negative, but probably papered over his flaws a bit more than they should have.

Could he have had the same success without being such a dick? I think so.

How do you think Zuckerberg came across in Social Network?

I didn't like the movie, but I kind of felt like despite the business aspect and somewhat ruthlessness/asshole-ness and as dislikable as he was, Zuckerberg was still somewhat the sympathetic character. Good writing/directing/acting?

I don't remember it that well, but I had the same impression - thought he came across as a sympathetic douche.

I enjoy business movies. Prefer documentaries with interviews with actual sources, but still like the movies.

Did they have him sitting at his desk with a 8x11 picture frame of him and Nixon. A classic hollywood propaganda move, put a republican or business picture in a picture frame for your eyes to see to frame a bad guy in association with a given political or business figure. I laugh each time I see this in movies. Best one however was seeing a highly inflated world currency bill with Obama's face on it...lol

brothers did to screw him over too. They had an agenda for the movie and made the script fit. Like all people, Kroc was a complicated person who did good and bad things. For example he decided to screw them at the end on the royalties because they screwed him over at closing regarding some land they promised to turn over. However the movie skips that.

Bill Gates, and Zuckerberg can fit into that category since they were Brilliant and yet Ruthless pricks.

I think with Kroc though he did more good than harm, think of the millions of People who found work through his company.

About 1976 in San Bernardino California ( I think it was already closed). My wife and I wondered why as successful as they were, already - why it wasn't a museum.

The Krocs just weren't interested in nostalgia, I guess. I seem to recall that the building sat there for a while, empty. That was 40 years, my memory of it is fuzzy, I only saw it once.

They did become San Diego favorites. They owned the Padres and were a big generous part of the community. (San Diego loved them almost as much as they hated the Spanos family - who owned the Chargers)

As great of a businessman as Kroc was

Has Hollywood ever gotten a biographical or historical movie right?

Watch any given one, then read about the real events. Often, they get the tone right, but beyond that, the answer is usually no.

never, ever, learn history from Hollywood. watch, be entertained, be inspired to learn more. trust it as true? never, unless verified by other sources.
