NFT: Avalanche @ Rangers, 7PM EST on MSG

bigbluehoya : 2/11/2017 10:11 am
Rangers go for the clean sweep of the 4 game homestand, and 5 straight overall.

Girardi ruled out after a very quick attempt to skate yesterday morning. Clendo lives.

Sounds like Hank will play again. I thought it seemed like a smart game to get some rest, but whatever.

No letdown tonight. This Avs team blows. Take it to them from the first drop and don't let up.

Kind of a tough night

For the Miller-Hayes-Grab line, but a nice skillful ENG to hopefully land this plane softly on the runway.
Didn't have to suffer

through the entire 2 minutes of the 6 on 5 for a change.
Hayes is back and the offense jumps a notch.

He and Miller are really nice forwards, and by do they click with Grabs.

Hoya again with a huge effort slugging that bourbon like a champ. Keep on drinkin bud!

Beard, MAB, zow, deej, 025, mook, anak, pauln, stuff, yat, CHP, Carl and madmike all big games tonight. Rollin 4 lines like a mutherfuckin freight train. It takes a full team effort on a Saturday night folks.

My 9 year old made me go on mission space about 8 times. Test track was fun.

win the games you should win. Rangers did it tonight. I thought this was the best game I'd seen Hank play in a while.

I did not think the Rangers D played that great, but Hank bailed them out. And man, McKinnon might be the best player on the worst team. He has no one who can skate with him.

You have to win these games against lesser competition...
Torrag : 2/12/2017 12:49 am : link
...but frankly this stretch of victories would mean a lot more to this season if it had some Cup contenders on the schedule. CBJ is up next and that would be a legit win if we can get it. It would speak volumes if our 'winning streak' was bookended by losses to Torts crew.

Congrats to Hank on his 400th win...yet that achievement would be hollow imo if it doesn't come with a Stanley Cup Championship on his resume.

One team in the entire EC has a losing record.. and it's the Red Wings who are 22-23-10.

That's crazy to me. How do you have a league where basically an entire conference has a winning record?

I like that the league is competitive and that there's parity but when that happens, that tells me something is definitely wrong.
weird cycles
ColHowPepper : 2/12/2017 9:32 am : link
kind of like the Western Conf' in the NBA, but it is an eye-opening disparity; hell, Torts shed the monkey when he left Vancouver (and AV before him) and now look at him.

Congrats to the King: he seems genuinely elated to have hit that milestone. Now that it's behind him, time to focus on keeping him a bit fresh(er) for the SCP and begin working AR in to at least eight or ten starts for the balance of the regular season.

Ever since rock bottom, and Henrik's "structure" post-game Q&A after Dallas, it seems to have turned around. His remarks seem to have reverberated. It's not as though the d has been playing lights out, but the clusterfucks of disarray in and immediately around the crease seem to have diminished.

top 10, maybe top 8 if he wins a cup.

I have Roy, Brodeur, Hasek (and people flip them, I don't care) as top 3. After that a bunch of older guys like Plante, Fuhr, Sawchuck, Dryden, not sure if you include Tretiak or want to mix eras.

I don't see anything really at this point Hank can do to displace the top 3. Hasek has 6 Vezinas, Brodeur 4, Roy I think 3 or 4. All 3 have multiple cups (4 each I believe for Roy and Brodeur, Hasek at least 2). Roy has 3 Conn Smythe's.

Today Hank has 1 Vezina and no cups.

I think he can get securely into top 10 with a couple more years cup or no cup, just not sure a cup moves the needle a ton based on the resumes of the players ahead of him.
.....
BrettNYG10 : 2/12/2017 11:57 am : link
I've always had Brodeur third in that group, but I'm not sure if that's NYR bias coming into play on my end - it speaks to how good he was that third might be construed as an insult.

Unless Lundqvist finishes his career Tim Thomas style with an additional Cup, I don't see him cracking the consensus top three. I think Cups matter when we're talking GOAT.
Hasek is #1 in my book.

Brodeur had the benefit of the neutral zone trap. Hasek and Roy where the main focal point of their teams. However, I used to believe that gave Brodeur an advantage in that area, but his international play changed by mind a little (two olympic golds and two world cup silvers that were not defensive teams, Brodeur played great when he was in net for those teams).

I think technically, Hasek is probably the best of the 3. but I have no real vehement disagreement with however anyone orders the top 3. I put Roy first because of my bias, but not a huge deal.

I do not see any possible way, even with two cups Hank cracks the top 3.

Hasek carrying the Sabres to the 99 SCF is one of my earlier non-NYR
BrettNYG10 : 2/12/2017 1:40 pm : link
Hockey memories.

As much shit as I give the Rangers for not winning it all with Lundqvist yet, the Sabres are worse because I think the gap between the best goalie in the league and an average one was much larger 15-20 years ago than it is now. It was that much larger of an advantage then (IMO).
I dont think you can compare
Deej : 2/12/2017 1:51 pm : link
stand up goalies to modern style. It's like comparing underhand pitchers to Kershaw.

I have Hank a healthy spell behind Roy, Hasek, and Brodeur for #4 in the modern era. He's the best goalie of his generation but season to season he was rarely the very best. E.g. I dont think he was robbed of Vezinas.

BTW, cups is a terrible measure for goalies. Hank stood on his head a ton, and his guys just didnt score.

Nagano was just as impressive IMO for Hasek.

that Canadian team was stacked (as usual), and they didn't even medal after losing to the Czechs and Russia had even more talent. Some people felt the Fins and the Americans had the best chances.

Hasek, Jagr and some JAG's (slight exaggeration) and they won a gold medal.

And slightly off-topic
pjcas18 : 2/12/2017 2:15 pm : link
I don't remember ever being as disappointed in a sports team I was a fan as the 1998 Nagano US team. Coming off the 1996 World Cup, the US team had high expectations.

It might be the best US team I can recall.

G: Richter/Beezer
D: Chelios, Leetch, the Hatchers, Suter, Schneider, Berard
F: Modano, Roenick, Hull, LeClair, LaFontaine, Tkachuck, Weight, Amonte, Deadmarsh, Guerin

that's about as good as it gets for the US.

More disappointing than the 2006 Mets, the 2008 Giants (and any Giants team), any Celtics team, any Canadiens team.

Just flat out under-performed and then trashed the hotel like assholes.

.....
BrettNYG10 : 2/12/2017 2:17 pm : link
Deej, I think your point on rarely the best ties into my point about the diminished gap between the best and average goaltenders.

In 2001, Turco led goalies (+20 games) with a .925 SV%. Brodeur was 22nd with .906. Brian Elliot was at .930 last year, with Raanta at 22nd with a .919 SV %. .11 difference last year, .19 in 2000-2001. It's become harder to parse out the skill/luck aspects of the position because the mean's been elevated. And on a season-by-season basis, there's a lot of noise in the numbers (team quality, bad luck, defensive system, etc.).

pj, I don't remember Nagana. Games were probably on at weird times and I didn't watch.
it was the worst
pjcas18 : 2/12/2017 2:24 pm : link
of everything, they tried to show the games prime time, but the results weren't secret, no one watched and the results were terrible, but I did watch some medal round games and Hasek was insane, shut down Canada to win the semis in a shootout and then shutout Russia in the finals, 1 - 0.

Gave up 1 goal in the semis and gold medal game, 2 goals in the 3-game medal round, including 1 to the US in the quarters.

This can't be a serious post. East conference is better but define what a winning record means when per this definition a team in the NHL 'wins' 60% of the time.
And the habs got smoked tonight in Boston
MetsAreBack : 2/12/2017 10:35 pm : link
Ottawa or Boston may take that division now. Boston actually quietly starting to put together a nice season.

Not sure tomorrow night is a game either CBJ or nyr really wants to win all that bad.... The playoff system is so completely fucked up. I'm fine with mandating at least 3 division teams in each pod but when the 2nd seed is in same division as first clearly they should become #1 in the other.

So
1-caps
2-CBJ
3-nyr
4-NYI (or whoever is 8)

1-pens
2-habs for now
3-senators
4-Bruins (or leafs or panthers ... Whoever)

I like this. Vesey has been working hard out there and somewhat effective on the forecheck and hunting down pucks, but I didn't love the rapport between he and Nash from a playmaking perspective.

Last night against the Bruins they were 100% healthy. Gallagher was back.

They live and die with Carey Price and he hasn't been great. and his defense doesn't help him. When the corpse of Zdeno Chara walks in from the blue line and puts one top shelf on you, there are colossal team failures.

They hit the bye week starting today and if they don't come out if it strong they could do three things:

1. stand pat, this is what I would do. Just get in and hope the players with some time together play like they were earlier in the year. Yesterday was the first game with the team together since November.

2. be sellers, i could see this, dump Plekanec, Desharnais, Emelin, players older but could have some value

3. get desperate, this is my biggest fear and they could trade someone like Galchenyuk (who I admit has looked awful since returning from the knee injury) or Sergachev or McCarron for a rental like Hanzal and that would hurt more than help.

anyway I guess that's not really going out on a limb, right? they could do nothing, be buyers or be sellers, LOL.
A shame to see Hartnell going off, huh?
