Mission accomplished on the homestand. Rangers looking for 6 in a row.

Buch and Vesey to switch lines (credit to MAB for that).

I won't get into the perverse implications of winning vs losing this game, but yeah, the rules suck.

Haven't seen anything on starting goalie yet.

Hope Hartnell catches a puck to the face.

LGR!
It's probably still too early in the season
MetsAreBack : 2/13/2017 10:12 am : link
to worry about playoff positioning, as we still need ~22 more points to qualify for the playoffs (24+ for WC-1, to be safe) with 27 games still on tap.

But I wouldn't cry about an OTL tonight (I know... what are those? 1 all year lol)
Forget playoff positioning
Torrag : 2/13/2017 10:21 am : link
This team needs wins vs legit Cup contenders for their own psyche. We're pretenders right now. I doubt that can change with the current D corps but miracles do happen. I've been saying for a decade that Hank needs to go on a Roy/Hasek like run and carry us to a Cup. So long in fact I'm not sure any longer he has it in him. It would be ironic if he did it in a season where he has looked lost at times.
Weird position to be in
Jay in Toronto : 2/13/2017 10:27 am : link
but I am worried about going on a winning tear these last 2 weeks and then vastly overpaying for the 'missing piece' only to see us bow out early in the playoffs.

That's a bit much. I'm not loving our chances either, but that's only because we sit in the freakin' Metro. Any other division in hockey and we'd be loving our season right now and excited about being favorites to get to hockey's Final 4.

Unfortunately we sit in a division where for whatever reason generational, Hall of Fame players have taken long-term, well-below market deals to win for their cities. Annoying.

Hasek was basically Jesus himself in 99 with the Sabres and it still wasn't enough. When he finally won a Cup as a 37 year old, it was with a Red Wings team that was 2nd in the league in scoring. Yes, Hasek was tremendous and was great in the playoffs but it was a team effort. He had some help.

Expecting Hank to do it all himself is a bit unrealistic.
Yes, you absolutely play to win this game
bigbluehoya : 2/13/2017 10:42 am : link
I was merely pointing out that the fact that this is something we even think of when we're less than 70% of the way through the season is pretty damning of the rules. Nothing we didn't know already.

good thing that UConn v. SCarolina (girls) start at 9:00, might have been a touch call as to which to watch live....(: (Lady Huskies going for 100th consecutive)

HL's recent run, and in respect of the milestone he just recorded, and the competition, only the occasional perversity of AV would tap AR here. Am I wrong?

As far as the playoff rules, they are what they are: improving the roster in the short- and intermediate-term has to be first and foremost, and the rest will take care of itself

Last time NYR were in town it was maybe the best win of the season so I'm excited for this one. Can't beat the prices here as opposed to MSG. Nash in the lineup this time which still adds some extra energy to the games in Columbus.

Definitely got one eye on potential playoff matchups. Been advocating for that first wild card but hard to be disappointed with the team and Hank most importantly playing better and picking up points. If anything, I'd just like to avoid the Pens. But we can worry about that more with maybe 10 games left. LGR

By the way, 6-7 this year against teams with 70+ points. Not great by any means, but not bad either. I think its more of a talent level issue (defensively), than a team confidence issue. Guys can have all the confidence in the world, the talent isnt good enough in the back.

tough week ahead, this past Saturday's comeback was important - schedule steps up quite a bit in class from here. @ CBJ, @ NYI, vs WSH this week.... good news being we have 2 day breaks between the games.

Pretty evenly played game. Neither team dominating much. Rangers have been on the penalty kill quite a bit. PK has been excellent; rangers maybe getting slightly better of the play at even strength.

Bobrovsky has made some big saves, Raanta has looked pretty good too but maybe slightly less tested.

Hilarious, but I swear that as Vesey drove deep along the boards before he swung in toward the net, he was too deep, the angle too flat to possibly put a dangerous shot on net.
A magnficent shot for a magnificent bastard.

(I also swear that seconds before that ridiculous tying goal by Foligno, with at least four Rangers circling the wagons, I was thinking the shitshow that led Henrik to say "structure", and boom.)

Hayes and Vesey with two of the sweeter shots you'll see in a period.

Fun game, that rush of speed and ability to pull it back to his forehand for the shot by Vesey was absolutely awesome and a nice reminder of what this kid can do. He's gotten lost in the shuffle a bit and may have hit a rookie wall. But that was impressive.

MetsAreBack : 2/14/2017 8:49 am : link
that teams coming off their bye weeks are now 3-8-1. And the league is already thinking of doing away with them next year.

I'm not a big fan of it personally, and I would normally assume there are other reasons why players/owners want this to go, but this is the NHL so... yup a 12 game sample size seems worth scrapping the idea.

for me was the same offer as last year. No change in ticket prices (which are dirt cheap) AND $600-700 (I have 6 seats) in CATS cash which is good for concessions and team store.

I'm thinking of renewing 4 of my 6 seats and just brokering them out (we are moving to NY this summer) haha.

Right. Who before Stepan.

My guess was Leetch, but that is incorrect.
yes, I think the question is who did it before Stepan
Greg from LI : 2/14/2017 11:00 am : link
And doing a bit of research, I think I'm right. I knew it wasn't Leetch because he had a few injury shortened seasons where he only played like 30-40 games, plus the strike-shortened 1995 season. Same thing for Graves. Messier didn't play seven consecutive seasons as a Ranger, and neither did Jagr. James Patrick tallied 40+ in every season from 1985 to 1992.

Digging a little deeper
Greg from LI : 2/14/2017 11:05 am : link
Vickers had nine straight seasons of 40+ from 1972 to 1981. Greschner topped 40 ten time but not consecutively. Don Maloney had six. I thought Tomas Sandstrom might have done it as well but he was only a Ranger for five and a half seasons, which surprised me. I also didn't realize how young he was when they traded him.
and yeah, I would not have guessed that this is Stepan's seventh year

Absolutely no one is guessing that top 5. You might get one or two, but not all of them. And Michael Nylander is #5 all time in points per game and #3 in assists per game. The wonders of centering Jagr!

BTW, here's the all-time gpg leaders for the Rangers.

1)Verbeek (only 88 games as a Ranger)
2)Gartner
3)Poddubny
4)Larouche
5)Bill Cook
6)Jagr
7)Gaborik
8)Murdoch
9)Esposito
10)Sandstrom

Out of those, the only ones I might have guessed would be Gartner, Jagr, Gaborik, and maybe Esposito.

while being nauseated during habs bruins on Sunday they had a piece on Marchand and said his nicknames are Nose-faced Killah and Little Ball of Hate.

Pat Verbeek was the little ball of hate.

I'm not a huge nickname guy, I use them in many cases especially when typing because it shortens the name like JPP.

But in watching Verbeek as much as I did, much live in Hartford at Whalers games, never was there a more perfect nickname in sports, though as I understand it he didn't get the nickname until joining the Rangers.

Do we recycle nicknames now? Is that acceptable?

Verbeek apparently "ok'd" it, but I'm not ok with it.

What's next calling Connor McDavid Mr Hockey or Jagr the great one.

shrink to insignificance!

BTW, here's the all-time gpg leaders for the Rangers.

1)Verbeek (only 88 games as a Ranger)
2)Gartner
3)Poddubny
4)Larouche
5)Bill Cook
6)Jagr
7)Gaborik
8)Murdoch
9)Esposito
10)Sandstrom

Out of those, the only ones I might have guessed would be Gartner, Jagr, Gaborik, and maybe Esposito.

95-96 was a strange year - I thought that team could do some damage! A couple of trades too many!

If Verbeek and Messier played every game (they missed a few games that year), they would have both scored 50 plus goals!

Society fell when Ladanian Tomlinson was "LT" and the people did not riot in the streets

It wasn't just Giants fans who relabeled him LdT?

One of my favorites was "Complainian Tomlinson"
I thought the '96 team was capable of great things too, Drew
Greg from LI : 2/14/2017 12:14 pm : link
At least, in the middle of the season I did. They fell apart late in the year, though, losing a bunch of games in the last month. Seemed like they might have righted the ship by winning 4 straight against the Habs after falling down 0-2 at home in the first round, but Jagr and Pepe LePew killed them in the second round.
and yeah, the Little Ball of Hate is Verbeek through and through
Greg from LI : 2/14/2017 12:16 pm : link
For one thing, he was a much better player than Marchand. For another, he was much nastier. Marchand is a fucking rat, a flopper who throws occasional cheap shots. Verbeek was a mean sonofabitch who hurt people.

This year frustrated me as I think the team prior to the Kurri, McSorely, Churla trade was good enough to contend. I thought they were well balanced with Messier / Ferraro as C1 and C2. Even though the Zubov/Nedved trade was already completed, We could have still hung on to Norstrom.

Neil Smith made some good deals and some bad deals, but that Kings trade was putrid. Purely reactionary because hacks like Uncle Larry kept saying that the Rangers had to goon it up to beat the Flyers, so they gave away Ferraro, Laperriere, Norstrom for two aging goons and the utterly washed up Kurri.

They also traded for noted idiot Sergio Momesso (aka Stoogio Momasshole, as the old Rangers e-mail digest people dubbed him) who made Puliot look like a very smart player. No one took dumber penalties at worse moments than Momesso.

It killed me for many years to see Norstrom playing at an All-Star level for the Kings while the Rangers were so desperate for solid defensemen. Exposing Schneider to the expansion draft was pretty damned stupid, too.

Agree almost completely!! I wasn't a big Ferraro fan. This was all part of the Colin Campbell ethnic cleansing of all non-English speaking, non-Canadian players. He would have dumped Leetch and Richter if he could have gotten away with it.
It is also not a big secret that Messier had..
Drewcon40 : 2/14/2017 1:45 pm : link
...a lot of influence on the roster. There were two Messier books I read ("Dragon Slayer" and a book by an author Jeff Klein), Petr Nedved's first departure wasn't any secret. During the 96-97 season, Nemchinov and Brian Noonan were traded for Esa Tikkanen and Russ Courtnall (the latter was acquired to absorb an injury to Alexi Kovalev). According to one of the books (not sure which one), Messier was livid as he was really close with Nemchinov.
Russ Courtnall couldn't do much of anything at that point
Greg from LI : 2/14/2017 2:06 pm : link
(which was weird because he was coming off a 26-39-65 season....hit the skids in a hurry) but that dude was FAST.

Tik did have a terrific 1997 playoffs. He was a key guy in the upsets of the Panthers and Devils.

another fun nickname from that email digest
Greg from LI : 2/14/2017 2:09 pm : link
Jari Kurri was Dead Man Skating.

Sarge's offense had mostly evaporated by the time of that Vancouver deal, but he remained one of the league's best defensive centers for years to come. His ring with the Devils proved that - you didn't play for Jersey back then if you couldn't defend.
Also, Tikkanen was good for these stories

The NHL is full of foreign hockey players; many with limited English skills say little. Not Tikkanen, 33, who was born in Finland, married a Swede and has played in Canada and the United States. In the middle of a hotly contested game, Tik, as he's known (it's pronounced "Tick"), will unleash a stream of words, sounds, barks and grunts that would confound a linguist, much less his teammates. Even his fellow Finns are of no help in translation.

When he played with the Edmonton Oilers, one of his teammates was Jari Kurri, Finland's greatest hockey player. On the bench, Tikkanen once let loose a particularly vivid outburst. One of the Oilers turned to Kurri and asked, "What did he say?"

Kurri shook his head. "I have no idea."

Nemchinov was a good player. Solid at both ends and quietly tough. Another Coach Soupy castoff. He hated Sergei Zubov too.
Buch a healthy scratch tomorrow night

vs Isles.

Peumpel gets the nod.

Smh.

I originally posted in the wrong thread. Smh again.
AV seems to really like Matty P.
Deej : 2/15/2017 3:30 pm : link
He's getting run over Lindberg and Buch. Frustrating. But I suspect it has more to do with wanting to play Vesey in the top 9 and Buch not fitting on the 4th line. Due to depth, one of Vesey, Grabner, or Buch has to exit to top 9 if everyone is healthy.
AV's decisions can be frustrating but I may not
Drewcon40 : 2/15/2017 3:35 pm : link
jump the gun here. Buchnevich looked to be struggling a bit defensively. If he is scratched for a string of games, I would be upset. Maybe just a night off in the press box can be helpful.
Matt Puempel over Buch is practically a fireable offense on its own
Greg from LI : 2/15/2017 3:36 pm : link
Buchnevich has more points in 24 NHL games than Puempel has in 70.
Yep, it's a good point
bigbluehoya : 2/15/2017 3:39 pm : link
For a player with as high of a ceiling as Buch, I'd just like to see him get a sustained run of time in the lineup to really get established and comfortable. Thanks to his injury or whatever that whole thing was, he hasn't had that, has been jacked up and down he lineup to boot, and oddly, has spent virtually no time playing alongside the Kreider-Zib combination he looked so amazing with in preseason.

I'm not going to lose my mind about it for now.

I keep reminding myself that as frustrating as AV has been managing he the forwards in real time, the results with Kreider and Miller and Hayes so far have been fucking awesome. He deserves my patience.
As frustrated as I get with AV over the defense
Kyle in NY : 2/15/2017 3:39 pm : link
I give him some leeway with the forwards. The development of our young guys under his watch has been promising and he's shown good in game instincts, like bumping Vesey back up the other night when he saw he had good jump. Buch will be ok
Great minds
