New York Giants 2016 Positional Review: Defensive Line - ( New Window )
I'll continue to beat this drum all offseason
Old Dirty Beckham : 2/13/2017 10:46 am : link
losing JPP will be an absolute disaster. The cap is expected to go up by nearly 15 million and the team is already in good shape prior to cuts.

Free agency should be used to retain JPP, sign a veteran OT, and replace hankins with a bridge player at the DT spot next to Snacks. Skill players like TE/3rd WR/etc can be added via the draft.
Eric, Thanks for the Write-Up...
M.S. : 2/13/2017 10:50 am : link

...it's amazing what an injection of real solid talent can do for a unit.

Keeping my fingers crossed that something like this can be repeated for the O-line. Even a "slight" improvement will make 2017 a very exciting season for Giants fans.

I agree with you 100%. Players like that don't come around often and when they do you go to the weel to keep them.
What a disappointment OO has been
jcn56 : 2/13/2017 11:05 am : link
People had him ranked pretty highly going into the draft, I thought we had ourselves a steal. Then, injuries basically wipe out his first year, and he's been invisible since.

He came in inexperienced, so there may still be hope for him, but I'm not holding my breath.
yeah, I commented on Owa in the sleeper TE thread:

regarding recruiting broadly
idiotsavant : 10:42 am : link : reply

and it impacts upon tight end as much as any position, consider if you have two players: similar production, same height and same weight:

Player A has skinny hips, smaller bones and makes the weight because he is already jacked.

Player B shows less muscle definition, his equal weight is due to bigger bones, wider ankles, hips, etc.

Remember, similar production.

I would draft player B.

Reason being he can add weight and power without creating higher injury risk whereas player A -already- may have great injury risk, too much muscle mass to bone and cartilage ratio.

An example from DL may have been Owa (jacked smaller player?) vs Danielle Hunter, who went a few rounds after our busted pick Owa. Hunter has done well.

Hunter was very skinny at LSU, but 6'6" and not too narrow either. So he 'gets to' get bigger without as much injury risk, whereas the jacked player leaving college may have seen his best days.

Of course, if one is a lights out better player, that's a big factor, but, again, kids from powerhouse colleges who get lots of reps in good programs get the stats also, so be careful.
But I agree with Old Dirty

I could see us loosing JPP and yet people would be like:

"but we signed (some has been or marginal left tackle)"

Oh...ok.

No, keep what works and the defense works. Loosing JPP would be robbing peter to pay paul.

OR, should I say, 'robbing Paul (Jason Pierre) to pay Peter'!
The problem with JPP is
That’s Gold, Jerry : 2/13/2017 11:10 am : link
availability...he is consistently hurt. I would be happy with a contract that gives an incentive for playing time but giving him Vernon type money would be a huge mistake.
oh please,
idiotsavant : 2/13/2017 11:12 am : link
JPP has a unique skill set. You wont find another, draft or no draft.
I generally agree with the concept of keeping the defense intact
jcn56 : 2/13/2017 11:13 am : link
but I find it odd that people who ascribe to that theory include JPP but discard Hankins.

If you're going to bring the D back, it makes sense to bring it all back. Unless someone signs Hankins to a ludicrous contract, he should be brought back.
we have huge question marks about the offensive coordinator
idiotsavant : 2/13/2017 11:14 am : link
but you gonna steal from a proven winner, in Spagnulo, to give an old vet FA OLT to frigging Sully?

No.
jcn, I would keep hank as well
idiotsavant : 2/13/2017 11:15 am : link
and go nutz on offense in the draft, starting with guards and other people who block and function
good write up again Eric
Victor in CT : 2/13/2017 11:18 am : link
I disagree 100% that losing JPP would be a "disaster". As you said, he's missed significant time in 3 of the last 4 years, wants big $$ and is getting older. No way I overpay for an injury prone guy who is now content with hos contract.

Keep Hankins (if $$ make sense of course), move Bromley to LDE
Bromley?
idiotsavant : 2/13/2017 11:22 am : link
hahahaha, that's clickbait for sure!
sure, wreck The D
idiotsavant : 2/13/2017 11:24 am : link
and invest in has beens for Sully on O.

Lets just change the name of the team to the New York Mediocrities while we are at it!

He actually played there a few times afetr JPP was hurt and looked pretty good. I think his build and palying style is more suited for DE than DT. He'd be good against the run at LDE, and has moves to get to the QB.

and GFY. I don't post click bait.
ok, thats a low bar tho
idiotsavant : 2/13/2017 11:29 am : link
bromley a better DE than bromley is a DT.

Since bromley is not all that good to start with.

Its apples and oranges, a 4 vs an 11 in JPP

It is like the EU telling Greece to chill since "be lucky, at least we are not as bad the old Soviets"
keep in mind Victor
idiotsavant : 2/13/2017 11:32 am : link
I ranted for years in favor of larger DE's.

However, Jason has highly unusual body control for a big man, its why some of us said he would overcome blowing his hand up, and he did, and dedicated himself bigly.

But are you willing to pay him Vernon money? I would not and I like JPP. Tag & trade.
With another 10 million in salary cap having been saved today,

there seems no reason not to sign JPP and Hankins.

With respect to Hankins, his biggest danger may be that Reese, as pointed out by a highly respected poster whose name I can't remember, has not signed extensions with other "One Technique" defensive tackles. Meaning that he made no effort to bring back Cornelius Griffin or Joseph.

As for JPP, the biggest danger is that Reese does not like to overpay big contract players, although he appeared to have broken that rule in signing Vernon.

Reese also doesn't seem to like to bring back players, once they have decided to not take the Giants' offer, but to "test the market" instead.

Management seemed impressed that JPP made it back to play the second half of 2014 games creditably, and that he came to play this year in shape and seemingly having compensated for the fingers.

This line seemed really so promising even for greatness in the five games before JPP went down. Three million in today's NFL is really nothing. If you have to overpay JPP, do it, considering how hard it is to get players that all teams are looking for. Go for greatness.

But that 10M can't all be used on JPP.....
Doomster : 2/13/2017 9:17 pm : link
You have to replace those players, with better players than they were....
Hankins or JPP
Dragon : 2/13/2017 10:07 pm : link
One guy is all he will ever be which is nothing really special one guy should cost much less and play much longer who makes more sense to resign? This is the type of decision that JR has to see clearly and know I can't keep and one has not been able to remain on the field it's not a hard decision when you look at everything closely.
Don't overpay for either JPP or Hankins
SGMen : 2/14/2017 1:49 am : link
The Giants know these players better than anyone, of course. Hankins is still young and he's decent next to Snacks. JPP, while very good when he is totally healthy, isn't totally healthy often enough for my taste.

I do want JPP, Hankins back. I also want a veteran OT starter (improvement over Newhouse), a 2nd WR in free agency. We don't have a #2 WR on this roster.
Mildly disagree
grizz299 : 2/14/2017 7:13 am : link
I always think: "how would New England and Belichek handle it?

I also think the Defense played well - even superbly - after JPP went down and carried us through a play off win and were on their way to shutting down Rogers until Cromartie got hurt and the offense missed two touchdowns.

Dallas is going to be improved next year and Hankins and Harrision match up so darn well with that great interior. Two athletic 350 run stuffers sound to me like the only chance against a Dallas team that almost certainly will be much better.
Maybe Hankins is key, and, by the way, a player that Harrison said has a great upside.
Conclusion: NE would not sign JPP. He is 29 and as great as I think he is (and I am a big fan of his ability) I don't think you can be hostage to one player and one injury except at one position. We have OBJ in his prime and a very good QB, all resources have to be spent on protecting and enhancing them.
Hunter didn't go a few rounds after OO
KWALL2 : 2/14/2017 3:12 pm : link
He was also a 3 rounder. And his success in the NFL isn't about ""he had the frame to put on weight".

We missed on Hunter as he went about 10 picks after OO. We missed on David Johnson too who went right before Hunter.

We have to give Odi one more year. It's not over for him.
Owa,
Brown Recluse : 2/14/2017 3:20 pm : link
has Justin Tucks build and Michael Strahans gap tooth. There's no reason why he shouldn't be successful.
grizz, as much as I love Sir Bill and the Pats for clear thinking
idiotsavant : 2/14/2017 7:19 pm : link
I cannot just assume one can cut and paste his systems, staff, daily insights and work to other teams.

On Offense, ironically, the Falcons, maybe shanahan, maybe broncos of yore may be a better model for us.

I don't pay all that much attention, but liked the way the Falcs fired off the line quick-like on O to set up the run to set up play action. we could use to get back to some of that.
kwall, my bad on round for hunter
idiotsavant : 2/14/2017 7:24 pm : link
all I know is Owa is not good, I suggested pre draft that year that we NOT draft Owa, and that's enough for me.

injuries and lack of true size, the college game is possibly most different at DE, given the types of OLs, in mercenary professional technique, as well as in average size, that exist in the NFL these days.

remember the numbers, so many teams, so may kids at college level, a much lower number of players at pro level, all gets ramped up by the numbers.
