Cruz had no guaranteed money remaining after the 2017 portion of his pro-rated SB (per overthecap), so how would it save them an additional $3.2M? He's only a $1.9M dead money hit as is.
Too bad we didnt have an OL that didnt force you to dance and get nailed.

and a great ambassador/representative for the organization. The Giants (like with Cruz) are going both of them a favor by releasing them now. It gives both of those guys a chance to sign with someone else before those other teams have finalized their rosters.

moves (Cruz/Jennings) create opportunity for younger players while giving the Giants more flexibility in FA. It was always going to happen we just didn't know when. I'd expect there might be 1 or 2 more getting their release as well.

To his credit, he knew Perkins was going to take his job and helped mentor him. The Giants will need to draft to pick up another RB, unless he's willing to come back at a paycut.

Exactly. The guy was professional about everything, a great leader and mentor, and a good guy for the community. He represented the organization as well as anyone.
especially a guy like Jennings who from all accounts is solid. But we desperately need to take drastic measures to fix this running game once and for all. This is a start.
I don't see anymore cap casualties, now it's time to start the restructures. I'd love to see the Giants get somewhere near the $45M range for cap space.
we signed him thinking he was the next Mike turner, someone who was stuck in the backup role but was good enough to start... It turned out he is good backup but he just doesn't have the explosiveness or the vision of the great running back.. Anyhow best of luck to him..

Vereen could be a cut, but I doubt its an early cut until they know what they are getting with his injury. He's also far more important than Cruz or Jennings if healthy.

By cutting Cruz, they save his salary of 6.4M + roster bonus of 1M + workout bonus of 0.1M, for a total of 7.5M saved....the 1.9M in dead cap is already built into the cap for next year....the only option would be to split the dead money of 1.9M(left from the signing bonus) over two years, otherwise he is off the books completely for 2018....
to remember that splitting cap hit doesn't save you more dollars. you simply defer half the hit to next year, essentially borrowing from next year's cap for this year. this year's savings look better, but next year a lot of people advocating the split will be bitching about dead money.

I think any plans to draft a RB in rounds one or two only make the release of Jennings an even greater necessity.

I liked him as a player and a Giant. I was lucky enough to see him at MetLife 2 seasons ago when he ran for 180+ against Houston. He was on fire that game, fun to watch. Thanks for your service to Big Blue, Rashad.

I think the versatile Will Johnson was used occasionally at Pittsburg to carry in short yardage situations. With Will in the backfield they wouldn't be giving away the play; he can block, run and catch (he was a converted WR).
Played his heart out while on the field (behind a pathetic offensive line), never complained but was always there to encourage and teach young running backs Williams & Perkins.
but he was a bad fit for this team. Our run-blocking was atrocious because our lineman don't push the D-line back and don't create big holes. So by the time a bigger, plodding guy like Jennings went to hit the hole, ,there wouldn't be any hole for him.
I wish him success and hope he finds a place that could use him.

This obviously had to happen. Even if he had his limits as a player, Jennings was one of my favorites. In fact, he was probably best suited for the role of 3rd on the depth chart, special teams RB.
He is a class act, a self made player, and an absolute role model. The way he handled the Kapernick issue was inspiring. While he will not be one of the most remembered Giants for his play, I think he should be remembered as one of the best people to ever wear blue. Best of luck to him.

Why must it? Giants must draft an impact player. Impact players create wins. Drafting an overmatched OL (or even a anthony costanzo type) or a Rueben randle doesn't generate wins.
I don't understand everyone clamoring for an LT in the draft. Go through the league and find the top LTs. Those guys are drafted in the top 10. Yes the Giants need a better LT. Unfortunately those guys are hard to find and their best option is likely Andrew whitworth or hoping Flowers gets good real fast.
Where the 'Giants are drafting it's much more likely they'll find a good starter at LB, TE, or running back because those positions are devalued.
Field. I was really sick of him taking a screen pass for a monumental gain of 8 yards on a perfectly blocked play. Every single time the words out of my mouth was "man I wish that was Perkins"
The offensive backfield has to get more explosive. Jennings burst is gone. His role has been taken by Perkins. Now we have to add another guy to the mix with some big play ability.

Plenty of videos of him not seeing the hole or cutback develop this past season. And despite PFF rankings, thought his pass protection and pass-catching abilities were declining as well.
No running back would put up big numbers running behind
the current Giants OL. Playing without a fullback or a decent H back didn't help either. Giants need two OL,a TE that can block and a different offensive scheme.
Opposing teams found it easier to defense the Giants offense.
Rashad was a fine person and will hopefully hook up with a decent team as a backup.Best of luck to him.
I mentioned him a few times lately. I'd definitely look into him if I am the Giants. And knowing the Giants, they definitely want a RB with a specific skill set. They want a bruising physical runner above all else. I'd bet my life on that. They will likely look for that kind of runner in FA and the draft. Lacy fits the bill. You just worry about the weight issues. He did lose a lot of weight last year in the off-season but one report I read recently said he had gained a lot of the weight back before week 1. However, he played well through the first 6 games before going down with the ankle. The guy can play. We know that. Is he a fat tub of lard right now coming off the injury? That's the concern. You'd think he would be working hard to get back to health with FA looming.

RB is as tough a position as any in the NFL to last into your 30s - Giants clearly need more young fresh legs at RB to go along with Perkins

Recall he had a monster game last season on the ground, and a few break out runs, Cinci game comes to mind.
Seems like a great guy, but not a fit for us for many reasons his fault and our current structure / build. Wish him the best.
