Insurance against Keenan Robinson. Not getting cut with VC and RJ likely means J.T. is at least on the road to recovery from knee injury. If/when KR re-signs, b-bye. If KR leaves, Jints could cut J.T. and re-sign to more of a make-it deal based on field time. No way he comes back at current contract dollars. Turning 29 in August, fits Giants LB bargain bin shopping mold. Good locker room guy, good specials guy at the very least. Don't be surprised to see him in camp. Can't completely ignore the position this off-season. Prefer KR, but J.T. is a decent fall-back.

Since he ended the year on IR he probably has to pass a physical before they can release him. That may or may not be the reason. Until they need the cap room (or a roster bonus is due) there is no hurry to release anyone other than as a favor to the player. And as you say, the Giants are currently short of veteran linebackers under contract.

J.T. had three healthy NFL seasons. He's not trending. I'd prefer my LB depth young and cheap. Young holds up better at a collision position. For instance, Skinner and Herzlich are pretty much the same player, why not keep Skinner who's three years younger? We know and trust Herzlich but do we trust his body (he's pushing 30)? Can Skinner be a short yardage guy like Herzlich? Logic says to push for Skinner but we don't know enough about him.

Back to J.T., we won't know his fate till KR signs somewhere.

Watch him get waived today.
