He's going to be a high pick. Probably first round and possibly top 15-20. Ian Rapoport reported a few days ago that some teams have him as their top QB.
agree he may go in the first round, but it is a huge mistake. He is a classic "high ceiling," "low floor" player. But teams always do crazy crap to try and get a QB, and there have certainly been dumber moves (RGIII, Manziel) than drafting Mahomes in the first round. This is also a bad year for QBs.
POSITIVES: Rocket launcher arm, and can throw darts, even into tight windows. Has the size and frame to absorb hits, and is definitely a threat to run. Has some Houdini like escapes.
NEGATIVES: Rocket launcher arm, which causes him to try throws he shouldn't, and along with his frame, convinces him not to give up on plays. Sails passes because he throws too many at 100 mph. Holds the ball too low, and has a loopy throwing motion. Terrible footwork. Throws off his back foot a lot. Comes from a "bear raid" offense, which means many of his throws are within ten yards of so of the LOS, and only require one or two reads.
with a kid coming from a system like that...they are essentially learning an entirely new position in the NFL. QB there is not even in the atmosphere of QB in the NFL. It's a long road.
In addition...I do my QBs last, usually not until April. You really have to get 10+ games of theirs done before even thinking about a credible grade. I have 2 down on Mahomes right now. That said...initial notes:
-Probably the best arm among draftable QBs.
-Love the release and love the ball. Very tight and quick, efficient thrower. Minimal wasted motion.
-Ability to make every throw is there, easily.
-Poor pocket awareness. Has no idea what to do when things start caving in.
-Isn't tough and it shows. He hates contact and will make mistakes because of it
-Made a TON of easy decisions and throws. As in...twice as much as any QB I've seen for this class.
-Looks a little frail to me. Needs meat on his bones.
scanning the draft predictions on Mahomes - he is projected anywhere

I would be willing to bet a meaningful amount of money that he won't be a first round pick and definitely not top-20.
I'm a huge fan of his, but I don't think a spread QB whose stats are somewhat padded by playing in the worst defensive conference in the nation ends up that high.
With no disrespect to Eli, I'd love our next QB to have some swagger and athleticism.
Thats his dad

Late third because of the physical tools.
