New York Giants 2016 Positional Review: Linebackers - ( New Window )
a little better than "meh" this year, which sadly was a BIG improvement
Victor in CT : 2/15/2017 9:31 am : link
from the previous 3 years.

I happened to listen to Rusillo & Kanell sports talk radio the other day. They had Antonio Pierce as a guest. AP was talking about all the new Contracts after SB 42. He said he was one of 5 players with expiring contracts, and the 4 others got new deals.

Pierce went to Reese and asked, "What about me ?"

Reese looked him in the eye and said, "We just don't value Linebackers that high here."
The LB group overall had a very good year

Seemed like we had a solid overall...

...Performance from the LBs this season. It does suck to think we don't have at least one Blue chip player that can really impact the outcome of a game though. Imagine a prime AP on last years defense...
There was improvement...
Torrag : 2/15/2017 9:52 am : link
...but there almost had to be as awful as they've been the last couple of years. Still a ways to go and if Robinson isn't re-signed or adequately replaced it could be a problem covering backs and TE's on third down again. Stay tuned.
Decent year
kash94 : 2/15/2017 10:06 am : link
they need to add some more depth if they aren't getting another starter though.

Speed is a necessity as evidenced by the Falcons first half performance in the SB. I think Spags understands this luckily.

I wouldn't go that far. We've gotten used to mediocrity. Very few big plays from this group all year.
I would assume part of that in improvement is also
Brown Recluse : 2/15/2017 10:21 am : link
the result of an improved defensive line.

I agree but do think we have a solid core. I also could see Reese add a LB early this year. I love Hasaan Reddick and Cunningham from Vandy, they would be good value in round 1.

Kennard, Cassilas, Goodson, Robinson ( if he comes back ) is solid.

Yes. Casillas and Robinson are more run-and-hit types who do better when protected by big guys up front.
While there was improvement,

fact is, it is still one of the worst units in the NFL.....

How many times on third down did we see TE's and RB's catch passes short of the first down, and because of missed tackles or poor play by this linebacker group, first downs were made?

Want to know how good this LB group was? Name all the big plays they made, this season......

We can't draft linebackers...Sintim? JW was suppose to be the first drafted, successful LB in years.....nothing....then came Kennard, who got a lot of buildup by BBI, and he has done nothing.....the only linebacker this team has drafted, worth anything, was drafted almost a quarter century ago....

One of the reasons, this team won SB's, was because of the play of free agent linebackers.....when Beason came along, he looked all world to BBI, because he made the average plays a linebacker should.....and once again it showed us how wrong the front office was.....it showed us how important a LB was to this defense, and the fact that, the position had been ignored by the front office, for so long....

Your lack of football knowledge is disturbing. The fact you just post shit and run with it is also mind blowing.
I forgot all about Ishaq Williams
Beer Man : 2/15/2017 12:23 pm : link
this could be the year the teams finds out if they have a player in this guy. They must have saw something last year to have protected him by adding him late in the season to the 53 man roster.

That's interesting, since after the 2007 season Pierce was only halfway through a six-year deal he signed in 2005.
Our LBs' weren't much better on our SB teams..
est1986 : 2/15/2017 12:29 pm : link
Minus Pierce in 2007-2008. Who did we have really? That said, its sure as hell strange that we have 3 All Pro type players in the DB's, 3 All Pro type players on the D-Line (assuming we retain JPP) and nothing to speak of at the LB level, just one elite player at mike would put this defense back to the level of play we seen from our defense in the mid-80's.
Notable free agent linebackers on the Giants Super Bowl teams
Patrick77 : 2/15/2017 12:30 pm : link
Antonio Pierce
Kawika Mitchell
Michael Boley

You might argue Deon Grant played a linebacker role as well.

I wouldn't say it showed the Giants needed good linebacker play to succeed more so that they couldn't draft or develop anything of worth at the position and even average to above average production from free agents have been hugely impressive compared to the draft picks.

Reggie Torbor and Kiwanuka would be the closest players I can think of as draft success stories at linebacker for the Giants. Both were brought in as defensive ends.
LB
stretch234 : 2/15/2017 12:51 pm : link
If you actually watch the games you will see how many times LB are not covering the TE in the pattern but let's just not pay attention to that

What LB are stopping passes to RB and to TE. Who is doing this.

Kuechley and Davis did nothing without a pass rush. Same with Sea LBs

People on BBI have this expectation that all these other teams give up no catches to RB and WR. It is ridiculous.

The LB play was solid this year. WTF is so wonderful about the LB play in the rest of the NFC east and most of the NFC.

The Giants don't utilize Cadillas or Robinson as blitzers or pass rushers

What is Cunningham going to do if they draft him. He has never played against a NFL caliber QB in the SEC. people really think he is this wonderful coverage LB

Mason, I hope you can forgive me,

if my posts do not meet your standards....I hope you don't mind, but I just had to go back and read some of your's, for inspiration and guidance......

Uh, I found none....
Let's be honest
est1986 : 2/15/2017 7:52 pm : link
How much better was Boley than say... Keenan Robinson? Because I don't think he was by much, and was Kawika Mitchell better than Casillas? No, maybe, just maybe as good but not better. We haven't had a LB as talented as Pierce since he left which sucks because we are going on nearly 10 years since we had that kind of LB. We need at least one difference maker at the LB spot... And we don't have one. We didn't have one in 2011 but we went 9-7 that year and Eli carried us all year and in the post season. We need a LB.
I liked Mitchell and was surprised when he went to Buffalo.
SB 42 and 46 and ? : 2/15/2017 11:15 pm : link
Unlike some of the other LBs, he had some big play in him. He was credited with a sack in the Super Bowl. I don't know if he was credited a half or full sack, but on the first play of a Pat drive in the second quarter Mitchell and Strahan both were on Brady in about one second, resulting in a six yard sack. This I remember as being a big play in the game, showing Brady that he was not going to have a peaceful night.
The defense was not the issue.....
George from PA : 2/16/2017 4:16 am : link
So these Lbers were good enough.

The offense and special team are what needs an influx of talent.

If defense remains the same.....I am fine with that....
