Left Tackle Market

ManningLobsItBurressAlone : 2/16/2017 9:49 am
With a lot of the options and bonuses being turned down, their are a few options available in the FA market for a stopgap LT. Granted there's a reason most are here, so I was seeing if there was anyone you guys favor. As of now, it seems:

Ryan Clady (30)
Matt Kalil (27)
Andrew Whitworth (35)
Riley Reiff (28)
Kelvin Beachum (27)

With a decision on Russell Okung being made shortly by Denver.

Personally, I like the idea of signing Whitworth to a short-term contract (somewhere in the range of 1-3 years), which allows us to shift Flowers off LT, and give us a year of reviewing him at another spot on the line. This also, could allow us to take a DE/WR with a clearer mind in round 1, as our short term fix at LT should hope to be steady.
Kratch had this blurb on a KC player we haven't discussed

here all that much, if at all..

Chiefs RT Jah Reid (free agent?)
An outside-the-box right tackle option. Reid has some starting experience (18 games in six seasons, 10 in 2015) and he could be cut to free up cap space in Kansas City despite the fact he'll make less than $3 million in 2017. Reid, 29 in July, can also play both guard spots, so he would bring versatility to the Giants if they want to take a cheap flier with upside.

Not familiar with his body of work per se..Anyone?
Personally, I Think Flowers Needs To Be Moved From LT

Not worth keeping the experiment with Eli's well being on the line.

Sign one of these FA LTs (or as a worst case more Pugh back to LT) to a 1 or 2 year deal, move Flowers to LG, RG or RT and hopefully find a G or T in the draft.

Call me crazy

The only guy I see the Giants going after is Reiff. He can play RT and LT. He will get paid. His versatility is the key because I think NYG will try to keep Flowers at LT. I also think NYG goes after a Guard in free agency and rebuilds the right side of the Oline. Maybe Chance Warmack from TN.

Draft a TE in rounds 1-3 and the O line/TE could be:

Flowers, Pugh, Richburg, Warmack, Reiff, Njoku

Not sure if this is better but we need so much talent infusion several pieces need to be added. This group might allow us to keep JPP and Robinson on Defense as well.
The only guys I really want
Jay on the Island : 2/16/2017 10:05 am : link
are Whitworth (probably won't leave Cincy) and Matt Kalil if he was willing to sign a 1 year deal with an option after.
If we move Flowers..
GeorgeAdams33 : 2/16/2017 10:30 am : link
...and he is worse at a new position with different footwork then we have to basically start over on building this O-line. It might be better to leave him and the other draft choices alone. Pugh & Richburg still have to prove that they can play their positions well. Right now we have three guys who are all playing just average at best, or they are amongst the bottom tier at the respective positions at worst. I am starting to think that we might be best off signing two high level free agent RG and drafting a RT in the 2nd or 3rd round to compete with Hart.

Along with my idea is the switch from basically a poor man's run-n-shoot, to a double TE offense. This is a good year to draft some Tight Ends. Our young head coach loves tight ends. They could be the neutralizers of the outside rush, thus helping to allow the O-line to function properly across the front shutting down the inside rush and forming a solid pocket for Eli.

Along with this I want a collection of backs who are over 215 and able to pick up blitzing LBs & Safeties.
ONE FA Guard

Yet the Lions played the rookie, Decker, at LT.
That should tell you how they felt about Reiff at LT.
The two guys who were cut yesterday (Clady and Beachem) are
both injury prone.

I never said Reiff was the best option just one that makes sense with his versatility. It has been the MO of the front office to have guys that can move if necessary. Just because Detroit upgraded and put Decker at LT doesn't mean that Reiff is washed up. It may have been what was best for the line as a whole and Decker may have been BPA when Detroit was on the clock. Plus having Decker play LT with Reiff being a Free Agent is smart football.

Reiff would be a solid addition.
We could've had Decker in last year's draft
andrew_nyg : 2/16/2017 10:52 am : link
and traded down to get him....probably picking up another 4th round pick.

Most of the time, like 90%, the rookie will play RT.
Even Tyron Smith played RT as a rookie.
I don't want Rieff as a LT, the Lions did not trust him there, that's what I am saying...that should tell you something. If they want him as an upgrade at RT, too pricey
for a RT here!

seem to remember Reid at the combine seeming to run like a gigantic tight end, athletic.

if cheap could be a useful piece
nfl.com from then
idiotsavant : 2/16/2017 11:17 am : link

Reid's a physically gifted prospect who needs some technical refinement and to improve his recognition skills but has a chance to become a starter down the line. Good pass blocker who uses his size well, forcing rushers wide past the pocket. Has pretty good feet and flashes the ability to slide back inside and get to the second level to pick off linebackers. Main issue is he plays high. Doesn't jar defenders off the ball and can be knocked backwards by the bull rush. Has proven to be very durable and has a solid work-ethic. Reid's a potential Day 2 pick with upside.

Analysis

Strengths Reid has great size and length. Comes out of his stance quickly and uses long arms to push ends past the launch point. Slides his feet well, agile. Wall-off run blocker who gains initial position. Can block out in space. Very durable and has a lot of starts under his belt. Hard-worker.

Weaknesses Struggles with his pad level due to natural size. Vulnerable against bull rushers who get into his chest. Loses the low-man battle in the running game. Doesn't drive legs and get much movement off the ball. Leans and lunges at times. Awareness is below average. Doesn't play with much of a mean streak.
sign Whitworth and Reiff
djm : 2/16/2017 11:20 am : link
OL becomes a strength. Reiff can play LT in a pinch but is better suited to RT. Move Flowers to guard. If he can't play there he can't play anywhere. At least the tackles would be locked down with solid players. The guards won't be worse.

possibly he works on cardio and gets skinnier and plays the 'big TE off the bench' at 6'7"327lbs
If the Giants believe that Flowers
Keith : 2/16/2017 11:24 am : link
can play other positions, they signing a stopgap like Whitworth makes a ton of sense. If the Giants don't believe Flowers can play RT or G, then I would be ok signing a guy like Clady who will probably come extremely cheap and could offer competition to Flowers.
Interesting...

Lomas was 37 when they signed him. And he was supposed to be just depth, it turned out that he won the left tackle position in camp. I think Whitworth would be a great pick up. I know he has his ties to Cincy, but at this stage of his career, you chase a ring. Unless he's going to end up on the Patriots, the team from the NFC which all free agents like him will keep their eyes on are the Giants. The window is now there for the Giants. They have the defensive parts, they have QB and Odell. And they have the cap room. If you are a veteran with some more left in the tank, the Giants are an extremely attractive option. Peterson's tweet yesterday was no mistake.
The Giants have a LT and he will be just fine. They need to do

something about the right side.
Whitworth is the only one that makes any sense. Why?

He's the only one that possesses the combination of actually playing the LT position at a high level and durability.

He makes a lot of sense but I don't think he leaves Cincy. I think Cincy lets the guard walk.

the RT and RG
msh : 2/19/2017 12:50 pm : link
spots are the biggest concern bring a guy who can play either spot (reiff?) and then work out which is better to play LT and RT of the two flowers has the size and feet to play LT it requires coaching to improve him maybe a couple of years at RT to season him before they move him back would be the answer all else fails move him insde to OG and draft another OT
