Per, Multiple Sources.
For a year or 2 tempting if JPP departs..32 last month..

Will most likely be too expensive
looks like we made the right decision last year

he's made an absolute fortune
UConn4523 : 2/16/2017 12:42 pm : link
and at 32, what's the point of even trying to get him?

theking : 2/16/2017 12:42 pm : link
He could come real cheap as a situational even. 1 year, 4-7 million.?
Reportedly, he dogged it last year.

He should go to
BigBlueDownTheShore : 2/16/2017 12:43 pm : link
Houston on a cheap deal. That defense would be insane.

He'll end up in New England.

That's was my first thought. Somewhere Reese, C. Mara and Abrams giving each other head nods.
We dodged a bullet not signing Mario last year

He was terrible in Miami. Questionable effort
Wow
Matt in SGS : 2/16/2017 12:45 pm : link
the Dolphins let Vernon go, ie- removed the transition tag, to sign Williams, and allowed the Giants to swoop in and sign him where he will be a part of the Giants defensive core throughout his prime. And they got 1 year out of Williams. They might have gone 11-5, but that's bad management of resources.

is drooling.
I knew something was funny when he had issue with Rex
Mason : 2/16/2017 12:48 pm : link
The one thing about Rex is that he is gaga for his defensive players that gives him effort and great play. Maybe Mario has a fork in him but he doesn't want to admit it.

I suspect it will stay the same. He was on the old CBA and has made several lifetimes worth of pay. He will probably get 1 year deal to the highest bidder unless its a Pats type situation for a ring. A big pass from the Giants, hopefully.
I completely forgot he was even in Miami.

Remember how hyped that draft was? Williams, Bush, Leinart, Young, etc. Williams was the best of that bunch but the group was a huge disappointment overall.

I think they are also getting a 3rd comp pick for Vernon.

Essentially they let Vernon walk for a late 3rd/ early 4th rounder and allocated similar salary to Williams for 1 year of sub par production. If they kept the transition tag on him, that would scared teams away because they did the negotiating for Dolphins, and they could simply match it. Giving up Vernon (plus salary) for 1 year of Williams (at his cap hit) plus a late 3rd round pick isn't a good move.
He may have come at a premium but we still stole Vernon

Very good signing.
I don't think anyone can blame the Dolphins for not retaining
Brown Recluse : 2/16/2017 2:45 pm : link
Vernon.

He wasn't even their best defensive end and he is now making more than JJ Watt. Plus they have Suh at Defensive tackle.

All in all, they made out fine and so did we.

We needed him more than they did.

If the Phins could have afforded to keep Vernon and they failed to keep him, it was dumb. OV was the best defensive player in the NFL over the final 8 games of 2015. And he's young.

You don't want any part of Mario Williams. HE's been done for years now. He quit on Buffalo two years back. Then he was released by Miami one year later. He's as done as over cooked chicken fried steak.

is maybe the greatest wasted talent / money motivated guy in present day sports. He got paid many a times, with reports that he dogged it all the way through. Guy has never cared about anything but the money, but hey, that's his prerogative.

The Dolphins made the playoffs.

The Dolphins defensive line had more sacks without Vernon than the Giants line had with him.

Overall, the Dolphins defense led the league in QB hurries with 129.

They didn't need him like we did. He was not worth $85,000,000 to them.

Its not "dumb." Its smart.
