NFT: Raleigh NC: Anyone know good places to eat?

NYG27 : 2/16/2017 1:58 pm
Never been there but I'll be there next week on a business trip. Anyone familiar with the area to give some suggestions on places to eat? I'll be near NC State's campus.

I've heard a lot about North Carolina BBQ, so I would look forward to going to a good barbecue place.

Open to any other good eat locations from Italian to Steakhouses.

I just checked out their website. Menu looks really good, adding it to my list of places to visit. Thanks

Looks like Pooles is owned by the same company that owns Beasley's. Can't go wrong with comfort food, will have to check both those locations out.
Regarding BBQ in NC, many places serve an eastern NC style
Giants61 : 2/16/2017 4:03 pm : link
which is vinegar based and not the sweet style that you may be used to or prefer. Just be careful. I've been to The Pit and to Clyde Cooper's and both are very good

Some BBQ joints - ( New Window )

Thanks for that link. I'm going to be there for two weeks, so I wanted to sample the different styles of BBQ the area had to offer. Planning to visit several of those locations and try both styles.

Great BBQ.

Keep on reading great reviews for The Pit, have to make that a stop one of the nights I'm there.

Sullivan's looks good, might have to skip breakfast and lunch the day I visit them, as I'm pretty sure my bill will be close to my daily per diem allowed. LOL
Go to Durham and

Eat at Bull City Burger. It's right near the stadium. They have the best burgers. Gourmet everything. They make everything in the place from scratch except he wine and bread (yes the beer too). Get the bull city nuts. Delish

If you go, ask for Seth and tell him his cousin Steve sent you.
Angus Barn

Took some out of towners to Beasley's tonight, they loved it. You cant go wrong with any of fhe restaurants in the ashley christensen group honestly. She was just nominated for the national james beard award.

For BBQ, Raleigh itself is somewhat lacking. The Pit is great but most folks in NC cannot fathom upscale BBQ ie paying more then $6.95 for a plate of chopped bbq. Closest thing to old style traditional is Ole Time BBQ on Hillsboro street. Its a hole but the food is great. If you have a chance to go out into country one day you can really get the experience.

Sullivans is awesome but it is a chain. Angus Barn is worth a visit if you have never been but it will not be the best steak you've ever bad. But definitely one of the most unique steakhouses in the country and a great experience, i always try to take out of town guests here if they have never been.

If working near State, hit East Village for a good greasy college burger and cold beer. Also the iconic Mitch's Tavern, where they filmed the bar scene in Bull Durham.

My favorite restaurant in Raleigh is Bali Hai mongolian stir fry on US 70 in Garner. Not the same as it was before it burned down in old location on Wake Forest Rd but still damn good. If you like spice get a combo D10. And yes Yelp says it sucks but f yelp. I will defend bali hai til the day i die.
I'd second 42nd street

Its a definite raleigh instituion

Also for burgers i am partial to char grill, get the half pound and be sure to get a shake. Hot dogs, snoopy's kicks ass. Both on hillsborough not far from state, heading towards downtown. Also a snoopy's near meredith college on hillsborough.
The Pit is terrific...

Two more suggestions
Luis in NJ : 2/17/2017 7:33 am : link
Cowfish at North Hills: Sushi / burger fusion (trust me)

Raleigh Beer Garden on Glenwood South. When it opened two years ago it over 300 beers on tap. At the time it was supposedly a world record.
All of Ashley’s places like Poole’s Diner are fantastic
bigblue1124 : 2/17/2017 8:05 am : link
I have known Ashley for years and all of her places are fantastic and really proud of her. With that said keep in mind depending on when you choose to dine be prepared to wait. I don’t believe any of them except reservations and with most James Beard Award winners they get packed quick and often. She is not the hot chef in the Raleigh area she is one of the hottest in the country right now. I highly recommend her places but as I said be prepared for a wait.

Other places in the area like the Pit some have recommended is very good but keep in mind the godfather of Q Ed Mitchell is no longer there. He is opening a place in Raleigh currently but no date set for grand opening.

Angus Barn is always a good place great service, food is very good and reasonably priced and a neat place to see.

Chains- the Capital Grille does a nice job

Gravy an Italian place owned by the same group who owns the Pit is solid.

Second Empire has been a good place for years and Tazza Kitchen is a nice casual place as well.
Thanks for all the feedback
