New York Giants 2016 Positional Review: Defensive Backs - ( New Window )
this unit is the strength of the team

Apple was a great pick. If Darian Thompson can be the player they think he is this will be the best unit in the league.
Even though we have a multitude of needs...

The upcoming draft is so deep with DBs that I'd love to see the Giants pull the trigger on a CB and a Safety. There's a ton of talent there, and decent prospects to be found well into Day 3. If our secondary is indeed a strength, then for God's sake keep it strong with another infusion of young talent.

I agree and think they will definitely draft another CBS, perhaps as early as the 3rd round. DRC will not be here much longer and depth is also sorely lacking and so IMO, it's a no- brainer.
I agree.....

This is a passing league....

We need to draft DRC's replacement, because of the possibility of him missing playing time, and because he is getting up there in age........

We also need to draft a free safety.....Thompson has had two injuries so far, and his durability is in question....plus we really have not seen enough of him to really evaluate him....after him, we basically have nothing....

Throw in a LB that can make plays, and I will need an extra box of tissues for the drool...
Doomster and I agreeing on something.

Isn't that, like, the Fourth Sign of the Apocalypse?
Enjoy both of

*drool* huh?
I think this draft is too heavy at CB and S

I expect the Giants to add another big time player to this secondary through the draft. It's all hype thus far but my thinking is if Apple came out in this class he would have been a much later pick. If the Giants can draft the equivalent of Eli Apple at 23 this year you do it IMO. That is assuming there isn't someone on their board a row higher available.
Meant top heavy
Patrick77 : 2/17/2017 11:43 am : link
Not too heavy.
Maybe the best Giants' secondary I can remember

They just stoned people all year. And they should be even better next year with Apple in his 2nd year and the return of Thompson.
So far, this is the one positional review that I think is 100 spot on

There really is nothing to debate, either in the individual write-ups or the overall review of the unit. I would only add that I sincerely hope DRC is back and D. Thompson can return from injury. Even if he does, we still need help at S for depth.

I honestly think it is in Berhe's best interest to retire. Two concussions in this year alone put him at great risk, even without his style of play. He really is in danger of ruining the rest of his life.

To me, one of the biggest surprises was Apple's ability to avoid the big penalties, overall. His college play included a lot of contact near the line and a lot of grabbing during and at the end of routes. It looked like a risk for a lot of holding and illegal contact penalties. Instead, he provided solid, yet still physical coverage. I really like his upside and his ability to close on ball carriers in front of him (both WRs and RBs) with determination.
Janoris Jenkins...

...was a 2-for-1 specialty!

Every week he brought tremendous reliability to the game, replacing in effect Amukamara who could look great on five plays and then cost you the game on one play. And that assumes Amukamara even dressed.

That's a 2-for-1 that paid off beautifully!

The Giants have never shied away from drafting CBs in round one,
Klaatu : 2/19/2017 10:48 am : link
That could conceivably happen again this year, depending on who's still on the board when the Giants are up and how the team has them ranked, of course.

As for Safeties, although the Giants traded up in the 2nd to draft Collins two years ago, and used a 3rd on Thompson last year, they usually look for Safety help on Day 3. I wouldn't expect that to change this year.
