NFT: Melatonin

Hey BBI,

Anyone use melatonin for helping occasional sleeplessness?
Any recommendations on brand or dosage?
Yes

The fast dissolve 3mg are pretty great at knocking me out. They go up to 10mg, I think, but that's nuts. 1-3mg should be all you need for occasional sleeplessness.
Trust me on this. Take smallest dose possible
DennyInDenville : 2/17/2017 6:54 pm : link
Nothing wrong with a heavy dose but a small dose is all the brain needs..

I get the lowest dose tablets which is usually 3-5 mg and I cut them into 4-5 pieces or more and take about 0.50 mg and it puts me into a great natural type of sleep.

It's all the brain needs, anymore then that maybe a complete waste.

Same thing goes for Benadryl too, less is more.
Liquid form under the tongue

has had a better effect than the pill form. Unfortunately my insomnia issues have been pretty bad and it does not do a thing for me. What I did notice was that when I first started taking it, it seemed to work at the beginning but if I wanted to be asleep by midnight I had to take it at around 10 PM. Now it does not work at all.

Everyone is different and not everyone's body chemistry is the same so it is very effective for many people and I wish I was one of them!
Yeah my wife and i occasionally do

Certainly helps.
I use the Natrol brand, it works very well most of the time.

Occasionally I will have to take an Advil PM when it doesn't, like after a big Giants win, crushing loss, or if I have something important the next day.

I occasionally take the Melatonin-1 from GNC. Tiny pills that I end up biting in quarters and letting dissolve under my tongue as I read before bed. Usually puts me out but lately I've had really odd and sometimes bad, disturbing dreams. That may be a product of something else but it only has happened recently when I've taken a Melatonin. I'll also wake up suddenly with a start - like something has happened in the room. Weird shit.

In the past, I have sworn by the things because you get good sleep without the groggy after effects of a Tylenol or Aleve PM.

Guess I'll go back to grass.
I prefer Tryptophan
Dhoe20 : 2/17/2017 9:31 pm : link
It's more expensive, but it has less groggy effects, and it's not habit forming. Instead of putting directly putting Melatonin in your body, tryptophan promotes the brains creation of melatonin and seratonin.
Benadryl works better for me.

And my doctor said there's no downside to taking it.
Sadly,

I have to use Ambien. At 56, I've had sleep issues for half a century. Just can't shut down the few brain cells I have.
It's helped me in the past.

I found the most effective use is to take it about an hour before bed. Also found that, like most supplements, you have to take it regularly for a couple weeks before you start to see the benefits.
I have never taken in
pjcas18 : 2/18/2017 10:52 am : link
it but I did give one of my kids it for a while when she had bed time anxiety and couldn't get to sleep and then as it got later and later and she was still awake she'd get anxiety about waking up. She as maybe 7 or 8.

Our pediatrician recommended it, don't remember the dose, but it was small, and it worked, but I think she maybe took it 5 times.

while studies show it's safe for kids I'm never comfortable medicating them unless it's really necessary and she grew out of it.

I just drink myself to sleep.

Same story with me! Over-active brain. In my case, I'm just trying to keep up with normal folk.

I just drink myself to sleep.

Not an option for me anymore. :>(
I use it pretty regularly

The dreams can be a trip though

is not medication. It is a very good antioxidant.

Guess I'm not the only one. I've had some tripped out nightmares that have scrambled my brains when I wake up.

Same here. I had the worst, most vivid nightmare after taking this stuff 10 plus years ago. Threw it out and never took again.
Dreams
Jim in Fairfax : 2/18/2017 4:11 pm : link
It's unlikely Melatonin caused you to have the dreams you had, at least not directly. More likely, it let you sleep more soundly and thus have undisturbed REM sleep. That led to more vivid dreams, and sleeping through the night let you awake during or just after a REM cycle, letting you retain memory of your dreams.
We produce it naturally..

So it's not like you're putting some foreign substance into your body. You really only need a low dose for it to help, though.

I've taken doses from 2mg to 10mg. 10 is definitely not necessary.
