NFT: Yanks talk 2-18 Betances gets 3 mil in arbitration

superspynyg : 2/18/2017 11:49 am
Which is what the Yanks offered. Betances's agent wanted 5 mil. Yanks President Levine rips Betances's agent for going to arbitration.

I agree with the Yankees on this. 3 mil is a huge jump from what he was making. Now he can get into ST and get his form right for 2017.

Looks like signing Chris Carter is looking a little better. I was already on-board with his signing and it looks like he might be needed if Bird needs to go to the minors for a few months.

If I was the Yankss I'd try to sign Betances long term now

This was year one of arbitration eligibility?? He has 2 more years right? If so I would pay him 3 mil this year, then give him long term deal next year. If not I agree.

And If he is a whiny baby and wants to try FA we can always trade him for more pieces.
Counter argument
Jim in Fairfax : 2/18/2017 12:20 pm : link
He's thrown more innings than any reliever in baseball the last 3 years. He was an All-Star all three years. He may start chafing at the workload he's been asked to carry.

He's privately concerned over his workload per Sherman

Concerned about his workload?

Why did Randy Levine have to have a conference call today

and rip Betances? Things have only improved since Levine had disappeared from the scene. Idiot comes out today to cause unnecessary drama.

Seriously. You won. Just shut up.

But no. Randy Levine has to go out and open his big, stupid fucking mouth. He's a joke.
Randy Levine opens mouth and reveals he's a clown?

Now he may want to leave us because of Levine's idiocy. Sohard to root for the Yanks sometimes.
The arb decision was fine, it was a longshot anyway....
Dunedin81 : 2/18/2017 4:36 pm : link
They value precedent and he's a first time Arb guy. But Levine spiking the ball was classless and fucking stupid, vintage Levine. He supposed misstated Dellin's name as Dylan throughout his portion of the proceedings too. Between him and Trost, the Yankees sure know how to pick em.
I didn't see the video, but reading the Daily News article
shockeyisthebest8056 : 2/18/2017 4:55 pm : link
Levine acted like the money was coming literally out of his own pocket. I've heard of the arbitration meetings being contentious, but after you win, WTF are you still complaining about?

Must be a thing that happens nowadays.
Tried to tweet Hal. No twitter
section125 : 2/18/2017 5:03 pm : link
that I can see. Levine is a DB. What purpose does he serve? Betances will blow it off, because $3 mill is $3 mill. Next year, a big bump.
Levine is detestable

I hope the aftermath with Betances is amicable. The kid is important to our future.
I don't really understand what Levine does for the Yankees, and
Mad Mike : 2/18/2017 7:29 pm : link
how he does it well enough to justify keeping him around when he so consistently makes dumb and insulting public comments. Seems like he should be working for Dolan. Or Daniel Snyder.
Levine is an ass
Matt M. : 2/18/2017 7:57 pm : link
and out of line and classless. I happen to think his reasoning is off, but I do ultimately agree with the arbitration decision. Levine just should have kept his mouth shut.

Though he would have been fired long ago.

He's a fucking stain.

He's remained this long. That means he's in until he pulls a Swindal.

Hal needs to put a gag order on this stupid fuck just like he did with his dumbass brother.
Chris Moore said it well on WFAN this afternoon

(Paraphrasing)

The business of sports can lead to some hard situations, but completely avoidable situations like this really make fans cringe.

Betances is not only a home-grown prospect, he's a hometown kid from BK / Manhattan. What in the fucking fuck.
Arbitration is never pretty

There were hurt feelings when the Yanks went through it with Jeter and Mo. It's over now. Everyone can lick their wounds and play ball.

It was over. But now it's not. With Jeter and Mo, the club just said some generic "it's just business" b.s, and then shut up. They didn't call a press conference to disparage the player, mispronouncing their name over and over. Really makes you feel like an important part of the team.

Betances will get over it
GiantJake : 2/19/2017 2:06 am : link
It sure doesn't help when it gets blown out of proportion by the media and fans just looking for something to scream about. A few days into spring training and the press is probably giddy about the "scandal" that they can write about. Fans are happy because now they have a villain in Levine and they can cry for his head on a platter. It's all bullshit. Yes, Randy Levine was stupid, but in the end Betances still got a pretty good raise. He didn't get cheated, there was no conspiracy. This isn't the first time and won't be the last time that arbitration gets a little ugly. Boo Hoo! Betances feelings are hurt. He can shake it off and play ball or he can take it to the next level and demand a trade. Either way, enough bullshit!! Play ball.
So when Betances hits free agency, where he going to end up
Bramton1 : 2/19/2017 6:17 am : link
Cause Levine just single-handedly killed the Yankees' chances of resigning him.
Usually artibration is ugly, and once it's over, it's over.
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/19/2017 8:48 am : link
Usually teams don't continue to take shots at their own player once it's over. It's a bit unprecedented. Not sure why you're making it out to be a media creation. That wasn't normal.
Not beyond the realm to think the Yanks are confident
mfsd : 2/19/2017 8:59 am : link
they have some good short relief depth coming up over the next couple years, so they're going to ride Dellin while he's cost controlled then let him walk in FA. Which would be a harsh but fair business decision.

But as others have said above, Levine publicly rubbing his nose in it was just a dick move, and bad PR when others players look at how the Yanks treat their guys.
So some blowhard overprivileged dick
JerryNYG : 2/19/2017 9:00 am : link

I am not so sure that he will get over it. This is what he said yesterday, "You look at it a little differently now. I think (free agency) will be a little easier when the time comes." - Dellin Betances

Murray spoke exclusively to Rosenthal, accusing the president of effectively bullying the 28-year-old during the arbitration process and claiming that Levine had both mispronounced Betances’ name throughout the hearing and blamed the reliever for “declining ticket sales and their lack of playoff history.” Like Betances, Murray said that the agency was ready to accept the arbiter’s decision and move on before Levine’s decision to air his grievances to the media. “The only person overreaching in this entire situation is Randy,” Murray told Rosenthal. “He might as well be an astronaut because nobody on earth would agree with what he is saying. Even the others in the room would disagree with him.”

If Steinbrenner fell for that then he wasn't as sharp as I thought. The city wasn't turning down that plan, if the Yankees bolted it would be catastrophic for local government.
seems like Levine now seeing Phil as his role model

He said that until Levine’s comments, he had been willing to set aside hard feelings about some of the comments that were made during his arbitration hearing on Friday — when the Yankees explained that they should not have to pay him $5 million by citing ... the team’s declining ticket sales. On Saturday, Betances spoke forcefully.

“They take me in a room, and they trash me for about an hour and a half,” Betances said. “I thought that was unfair for me. I feel like I’ve done a lot for this organization, especially in these last three years. I’ve taken the ball time after time. Whenever they needed me, I was there for them.”

...
“Is it selfish of me just to say now, ‘Hey, guys, I just want to come in for the eighth inning with no runners on, all the time’?” he said.

...In Betances’ arbitration hearing, Murray compared Betances to Jonathan Papelbon, who agreed to a one-year, $6.25 million deal after making the All-Star team in his first three full seasons with Boston. The pitchers had similar earned run averages, as well as comparable marks for the advanced statistic fielding-independent pitching, and Betances had far more strikeouts.

The difference was not in performance but in usage — Papelbon was used in the ninth inning, so he had 113 saves by the time he went to arbitration. Betances has 22.

Apparently, though, Levine felt the need to make his case not just to arbitrators but to the public.

It was Levine's job to win the arbitration case
GiantJake : 2/19/2017 11:52 am : link
Betances' agents were unwilling to make a deal. Therefore, it comes down to $3 million vs. $5 million. Levine's job is to save the Yankees $2 million bucks. Period. Betances' 3 million is a record for a first time arbitration eligible set-up man. There was no way that Betances was winning the $5 million dollar judgement because it was way out of scale and unprecedented. Levine knew that and made sure to feature that as part of his argument. Betances' agents shot for the moon anyway and lost. If they had filed for $4 million, maybe the Yanks try to meet them halfway and they settle for $3.5. They look bad, so they had to point fingers at mean old Levine and the mean things he said in the hearing. Levine got pissed and pointed out that Betances' reps completely misread and botched the case. These things are never pretty, but it is business.
