... and not time, but if this thing is 26,000 light years away and we are seeing it now, it means this event really happened 26,000 years ago, right? That, in itself, is amazing.

This happened 20,000 years before people were riding dinosaurs. Amazing to think about.
The photo Manny posted is just a simulation, it's not a photo of the actual black hole which they hope to capture this April. At least that's how I understand it. Do you know what a black hole is? - ( New Window )
Space has always been fascinating to me, since 1956, when one night, in Texas, I saw a meteor explode straight overhead. It must have been gigantic and in outer-space ....
It created a cobweb design in space, that persisted for a long while. I recall staring at it in awe.
From 1974 till 1985, worked at JPL's Goldstone Deep Space Station. It was my privilege to have the chief scientist on their Interferometry project try to explain the concept to me. (I told him thank you and nodded, understanding maybe 1 in 50 words that came out of his mouth).
If you ever come out this way, Goldstone is an amazing place to visit and tour.
but worded as such that Manny cannot be called out for it. If you came to a conclusion that the picture was an actual event then you didn't bother to read the link.
There's just as much chance that we don't see what the simulation anticipates, which would discredit Einstein beyond repair and just as much chance we get no picture at all.
A lot of optimism counting on uncharted territory and accuracy of complex algorithms that have never been tested but there has never been reason for this type of optimism before. It's exciting.
I'm guessing Manny is an ad exec? Milton being a movie mogul with a "Grow Your Own" docu to his credit calling out someone for educational value is kind of ironic. Party on dudes. May we all share bong hits of righteous chronic when the pics come out. I have a great 3 hour playlist of progressive rock to soundtrack that event.
Thanks for posting
Yes, that is correct.
Agreed.

If the scientists succeed, it might take up to a year to integrate all the data to form the picture that Einstein envisioned back in 1916 !
Here's some mood music (from the movie Interstellar), to use while looking at the simulated image ....

An entertaining series of books. The TV show is fairly decent too.

But, yes, it does help to read the captions (and better the enclosed article) before drawing conclusions.
And no, by no means have I ever been an "exec" of any sort. I'm just an old fart with time on my hands and a deep love for everything scientific.
