NFT: Islanders at Red Wings, 7:30PM Game Thread

pganut : 2/21/2017 12:13 pm
Well, this is it. Make or break. The 9-game road monster starts tonight in the Islanders' final visit to The Joe. It's crucial we earn at least 10 out of 18 points on this one. Weight knows the road hasn't exactly been kind to his team this season:
Quote:
We got to change things, interim head coach Doug Weight said. We dont have a good feeling, not a good vibe on the road right now. Weve been (home) a lot and weve been great (at home) and its been a crutch. Hopefully, we can get on the road and get together as a team and start to be that good road team that I believe we can be.
Stand or fall; state your piece tonight.

Thomas Greiss in net. Same defensive group. 13 forwards skated today; final lines TBD closer to gametime, with the bigger news being that Cal Clutterbuck will be in the lineup this evening. Shane Prince skated today, but not ready to return yet.

Ilya Sorokin and his CSKA team start the first round of the KHL playoffs today. While his numbers slipped slightly from last season, he's still among the league leaders with a 1.61 goals against average and a .930 save percentage.

Finally, while not Islanders related, a great video clip with Vladdy Tarasenko showing hockey players are the best. Stick tap to him and the Blues for treating the little girl you'll see so well: Tarasenko Surprises 11-year old Girl w/Neuroblastoma

Let's Go Islanders
12 points

Who is sitting for Clutterbuck?
Dave M : 2/21/2017 2:03 pm : link
I was hoping to see Seidenberg sitting tonight but I guess not. These Detroit games get crazy sometimes. Do we have any idea at all when Hamonic is due back?
On the Isles' longest road trip each of the last two seasons
Mike in Long Beach : 2/21/2017 2:06 pm : link
They've gone 6-1 and 4-2, respectively. I'm hoping that our road woes can be fixed (or at least contained) by getting into a bit of a routine over the next couple of weeks. We need to collect 14 points, IMO.

I know that's a huge number, but Florida's emergence as a force in the East has made that final Wild Card even more crowded. We have to find ways to consistently get points until March 13.
I wish they would trade

De haan and sit seidenberg. Bring up pulock already and play pelech. Or what really could happen is the coach breaks up the terrible pairing of seidenberg/de haan

I've actually liked de Haan a lot this year, but I also agree him and Seidenberg aren't playing well together. Lately both haven't been very good.

Just not a de haan fan. He was hyped up by the prospect weenies and he's just meh. I think he brings nothing to the offensive part of the game. I guess he sometimes makes quick outlet passes? But he never hits the net with a shot nor does he make great passes in the O zone. Which is pretty nuts to see him on PP2 while Pulock dominates in bport
Sorokin and CSKA wins game 1 against Jokerit
pganut : 2/21/2017 2:50 pm : link
4-2.

Dave, I imagine Gionta will sit for 15. Hammer didn't accompany the Isles on this leg of the road trip, but per Staple, will join them on the road for next week's games. It's possible this will be a one way trip for some, so it's in their favor that their bags are already packed :-)
We will know if this is a worthy playoff team or not
marbles : 2/21/2017 2:51 pm : link
After the trip we will either talk about moving assets to trade for Duchene, or moving assets to get Nolan in the draft.

My fellow season ticket holder buddy and I are in 210, but for our next home game we got upgraded to seats right on the glass. Here's to hoping that's a worthwhile game.
Road record
Fish : 2/21/2017 3:12 pm : link
The islanders sucked early on. New pieces replaced old pieces. We sucked at home, we sucked on the road. Since we've played a ton more games at home we got a new coach and players found their way. Now time to take show on road and show the NHL we are a good team.

You're right. I just hope that huge hole that was dug early on isn't their undoing (although statistically speaking, it is). That said, I'm gonna turn off the "scoreboard watching" during this roadie. All of the other stuff won't matter if the Isles don't do what they need to on this trip.

has done well the past month to make this road trip meaningful. Now, it's make-or-break time. Glad that clutterbuck is back with the team.

Need to get 2pts tonight against a bad Detroit team. Nothing ever easy though as Detroit is coming off of consecutive wins versus the Pens and Caps.

On the flip side, the last time they played in Detroit, the Red Wings were in the middle of a slump, but managed to beat the Isles anyway. Maybe this is a good thing for the Isles.

Both. But Nielsen thought he would leave town and have last laugh and now he gets to look at his old team trying to make the playoffs. Watching his old friends having fun without him.
It's all semantics
pganut : 2/21/2017 5:06 pm : link
But with Clutter back in tonight, I wonder if they'll pull the "A" from Bailey since he was awarded it while 15 & 3 have been on the shelf. I'd be curious to see if they take it away and it slows his mojo. I see no issue with 3 "A"s until Hamonic comes back (Ladd/Clutter/Bailey).

pganut : 2/21/2017 5:31 pm : link
Showing biggest increases in (score-venue adjusted) CF% since Christmas:
Quote:
The Islanders are obviously surging. The top line of John Tavares, Anders Lee and Josh Bailey are dominating, but there has been big improvement for Andrew Ladd, Nick Leddy, Calvin de Haan and others. Before Christmas, the Islanders as a team were hovering around 46.0 score/venue-adjusted CF%; since then, the team as a whole is up to 50.9 CF%, so their improved record has strong underpinnings with improved shot metrics.
While we've certainly seen a better run of play since the holidays, this is interesting to me given there have been games we've won handily, yet still lost the Corsi battle. Regardless, credit to Weight for helping to get these numbers to a much more respectable place. Full article/chart linked below.

Of any team in the NHL
And that was a pathetic defensive shift before the penalty
pganut : 2/21/2017 8:14 pm : link
Too many of our guys had chances to battle for the puck but backed off, allowing DET to keep possession.
Worst PP in the NHL
The 12th Man : 2/21/2017 8:15 pm : link
And they score on us in 3 freakin seconds.
I have the Wings feed
pganut : 2/21/2017 8:20 pm : link
And I thought till that final shift, we looked pretty good.

Not sure what the Wings studio host is watching but he just said the Isles' "shaky goaltending" allowed the Wings to tie it. Greiss was moving laterally, hard one to stop. But what steams me is at the puck drop on the final faceoff, we swept the puck but it hit the ref's skate which allowed the Wings to keep possession (otherwise, it would have been a 50-50 puck and I think we could have bled the clock).

It's one period, and we're not behind. Not the worst thing, but they need to be mentally strong the rest of the way. This game sets the tone for the trip.
THere's some good luck!

We turn a 4 minute PP into a SH save situation, then a 4 on 4. Terrible recognition by some of our guys (Beau) on awareness on the breakout.

And I love the 4 on 4 Isles-standing-around fest that's completely given momentum back to DET.

WHY
JayBinQueens : 2/21/2017 9:10 pm : link
Isn't this a 4-3
Shouldn't have been a penalty on Bailey anyway
pganut : 2/21/2017 9:15 pm : link
Nielsen tripped on the linesman, not Bailey's stick.

DET announcers bitching about the "extra slashes and hacks" by the Isles. Guess they missed Abdelkeder's whack on Greiss that started that late scrum, along with all the hooking/holding DET is getting away with tonight.
^
pganut : 2/21/2017 9:17 pm : link
Or the fact that on the PP on which DET scored, Larkin was slashing Mayfield as much as he himself was being slashed. Classic big guy vs little guy, so they call the bigger guy.
Jeez
pganut : 2/21/2017 9:29 pm : link
Patrick Laine has 2 more thru 2 tonight (Jets lead TOR, 4-3 after 2) and now has 30 goals. He's 19.

pganut : 2/21/2017 9:31 pm : link

Toews has been great and the word around the staff is that he's nearly ready for the NHL. His readiness (along with the other key young D we have in spades) is what allows us to have more chips at the deadline to deal, or certainly after the season as well. Don't know if you saw the AHL ASG, but Toews won the fastest skater competition (2nd fastest time ever recorded at the skills comp). With 4 QU guys, you really should follow them...gives you more a chance to get on these threads instead of the pogues on the other thread (ducks for cover).

Staple's article says it's a broken hand. Not from a slash; Kronwall's stick impacted Cizikas' on a shot and it caused Zeeker to jam his hand "awkwardly".

I could see Toews getting a look. If he were a RD I'd give him a better chance at sticking in the NHL.

Rangers had a high school teammate of mine in Hartford for like 6 years, so I followed the Wolfpack for a while. Never got the call to the Rangers. Plus I enjoy riling those guys up a little. I didn't see any Canadiens dive team comments last night, I was slightly disappointed.
Yeah, we're light on RH D; we have only 2 right now
pganut : 2/22/2017 5:47 pm : link
Boychuk and Hamonic (when he's back from his injury), also Mayfield (pressed into service but again showing he's a good 3rd pairing guy) and Pulock when he eventually gets here. But Toews has the ability & agility to play on his off side.

RH D are in demand. The way hockey is supposed to work is that if you're right handed (right hand dominant) you should shoot lefty.

Most parents don't know or didn't know this and in the older days just gave their kid a righty stick and kids learn to play righty (like me).

Now parents and coaches know this and more and more kids shoot lefty.

The NHL right now I won't say has a glut of LH D, but they definitely have more, so RH D are in-demand.
And many coaches

are sticklers about D playing their handed side.

I hated that, as a righty D, I loved playing off-hand D, the shot is so much better coming in off the left side or skating into the middle of the ice and letting one go.

only the offensive zone wrap around the breakout are challenging to learn, but definitely become second nature.
Thanks guys

Loses tonight, we will actually be in 8th because of less games played.
Florida loses to Edmonton on a goal with 7:58 remaining.

Philly falls to the Caps.

And after the Ducks score with 2:34 remaining in the 3rd period to take a 4-3 lead, they hold on andif only for a daythe Islanders hold a playoff spot in the East :) Not bad for a team that was dead last in the conference 32 days ago. I'm hoping for the best on this road trip, but no matter what, it's been quite a run to get to this point.

Agreed - it's definitely been a lot more fun than we imagined even into January

lost and the Islanders in last place, I thought sports was over for me until training camp. Glad I was wrong.
The Bell Centre tonight will be a rough one

The Isles do not play well there, Price is Price, and they will be sporting a new fourth line.

But if they come out of this game with two points, I will feel very good about the road trip.

lol, this is awesome.
