Inside the Film Room - Paul Perkins

gidiefor : Mod : 2/21/2017 1:46 pm
This is listed in dawgs news thread, but well worth a thread of its own. There's some really good tape of him in this segment. If this kid could put together a consistent season, he's gonna prove quite valuable and exciting.

The last 2 plays were blocked well but that first one ...

Ugh. Richburg and Flowers looked horrible.
Thanks for highlighting this!

Good stuff!

Impressive running from Perkins.
Fans like to compare various RB's . . . .

to different former Giant RB's, particularly Tiki and Jacobs. But this really does show a lot of similarities between Perkins and the younger Tiki. Though Tiki might have been a little faster.

In any case, smart running that should just improve if he stays healthy as he adjusts to the pro game.

zone blocking scheme for running the ball, Perkins with his great vision and ability to find/hit the open running lanes, seems like a perfect fit for that type of run game. Of course the OL still needs a big upgrade.

I really don't think the Giant run much zone plays. If we do it is just an inside zone but we seem to double and pull way more than anything else which are man blocking plays.

This is not a zone blocking scheme. Watch the first play on that clip, that is designed as an ISO lead but Richburg just absolutely whiffs and Perkins bounces outside thanks to the double team from his OL that gave him an edge. It's not even close to a zone blocking play and we really don't run that scheme.
My two cents....

on film the opposition is not seeing cut backs from the Giants so they are all flowing to the ball. My guess is that as they see more of this from Perkins, they will be more careful to watch for the cut back and may all not completely flow in the initial direction where it appears we are running.

Richburg wiffed on the first one, I thought the other blocking was goo

Examples 2 and 3 were very well blocked. Jennings would have definitely be down for a loss on run #1, and likely short gains on the other two,
Kudos to Carl Banks for his insights on those three plays
