Kosko PFF: TOP 10 INTERIOR DEFENDERS SET TO HIT FREE AGENCY
"6. Johnathan Hankins, New York Giants (47.1)
Hankins played out of position with the Giants adding Damon Harrison last offseason and his production took an understandable drop. After seeing almost 37 percent of his snaps at nose tackle in 2015, Hankins lined up over the center just 15 percent of the time. At 320 pounds, Hankins was asking to penetrate from the 3T position far more often than previously and he doesn’t possess the athleticism to do so. That said, if used correctly, Hankins will be a productive player, defend the run well and be a solid bargain veteran free agent."

I don't understand Pat's reason for why not to extend Pugh
adamg : 2/22/2017 6:58 am : link
I don't think she's right in her analysis of the cap size and how the contracts would work in two areas:

1. Pugh's 8.8. mill already is included in the cap, so if his average salary goes down in value, presumably they would lower his cap hit for this year too. Signing him long term doesn't add to our 2017 cap unless we want it to.

2. If Hanks and JPP are re-signed for average salaries totally 22 mill, that doesn't mean that's their 2017 cap hit as well. So, it's just an unsound claim to say we'll only have 7.75 mill left to sign a vet OL if we re-sign both.

Am I just wrong here or isn't that the case?

I know you are right on #1 = Pugh's hit will be smaller if he resigns to a long term deal.

You are likley correct on #2 also. Depends on the allocation..

Thanks section. You'd think a beat writer would be more accurate reporting cap stuff like that. There's a notable difference between 2 potential big FA splashes and 3 splashes + a long term extension.

Agreed. Watson may not even be 6'2", and had 17 INTs the last two season. Most of his snaps have come in the shotgun. Great leader, and can make all the throws, but I don't think he fits what the Giants want in a QB. The two most likely QBs are Davis Webb and Jerod Evans.

I have zero doubt TC would like to stick it to the Giants he seemed really bitter when he left (and I don't blame him)

That said, he is not the GM of the Jags. Dave Caldwell is. Tom has a fancy job title Mr. Executive VP (what exactly are his job responsibilities?) and a voice in the room but how much say does he actually have?

Well, they hired Perry Fewell already. So, I assume his say is more profound than your insider asshat crown.

It also is pertinent that the Jags lost out on Vernon to us last year and therefore are likely to bid in the same ball park if not more for an even better two way 4-3 DE.
I've known Pat since the mid-90's when we both posted...

I disagree with 5 1/2 of her 8 points in the linked article (although some of it is conditional). Too much to go into point by point so I'll just leave it for the individual threads that sprout up on each subject going forward.....

From PFT....
Quote:
General Manager Dave Caldwell got an extra two year’s worth of contract out of the series of moves the Jaguars made yesterday.

He also has less to do now, or at least less authority on paper.

In naming 70-year-old Tom Coughlin the executive vice president of football operations, the Jaguars gave the franchise’s original coach the final say over the 53-man roster, according to Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union.

That’s a reasonable expectation, considering the Jaguars went out and acquired Coughlin again so the credibility from his two Super Bowl wins as a coach might filter into an organization which clearly needs it. But it could also make for a potentially awkward transition to a new organizational chart, as Caldwell’s already four years into a job having had say over the roster.

Of course, if owner Shad Khan were truly displeased with Caldwell (after a 15-49 record in those four seasons), he’d have fired him along with coach Gus Bradley instead of letting him run the coaching search which led to interim Doug Marrone being promoted. In the release announcing yesterday’s moves, Khan hailed Caldwell’s “excellent work” in building a “talented and promising roster.”

And because Coughlin has no experience as a day-to-day executive, Caldwell should still have plenty of opportunity to shape that roster. He just won’t have the final authority over it anymore, after it was given to someone with about three decades more experience.

Junc, Tom is VP of Football Operations. Dave reports to Tom. Dave got clipped.

I think they should extend him now too. Because in his FA year, it wouldn't be a shock if a team gives him a huge contract to be their Left Tackle. Sure that's not his best position, but it's not like he'd just suck at it. And he could buy a team some time to find a better player, then move him back to guard a year or two later.

finding Eli's successor.

Next year is supposed to be a way better QB draft class. I'd go with a veteran back up this year and draft a QB in 2018.

I agree, unless we get a steal like a Jerod Evans or Davis Webb making it to the fourth or fifth round.
