I succinctly remember a few years ago, when the new league year opened, a fleury of moves were announced that nobody knew about like Bradford to Philly and Jimmy Graham to Seattle.
the 4 game Brady suspension just made things easier for the Patriots. JG was going to be traded anyway but his value skyrocketed in his 2 game audition.
2-0, 502 yards, 4 TDs/0 Ints with a completion rate of 68%.
when Buffalo gave up a #1 and a #4 for Rob Johnson, because he played well in a few games? Teams are idiots. What has Garoppolo done to justify the kind of haul Belicheck will extract from any suitor?
are very interested. Not for pick 3, but 35 (? their 2nd round pick).
Not sure if that qualifies as a blockbuster, but he's an IL native, went to college in IL and I read yesterday they are desperately trying to trade Cutler.

I also remember Seattle giving Flynn a huge contract based on one game with GB and he never even started a game for Seattle.

so it could involve the Pats, Bears and third team who would acquire Cutler.
He is a FA I believe.
Cutler is under contract 4 more years. As I posted earlier the Bears are desperately trying to trade him (so it's been reported) which is why I speculated they might be the landing spot for Garoppolo (as well as Jimmy's background).

Totally agree. The guy has played in 17 games in his career while starting two. Yeah his stats trend well, but geez.
the Pats are gonna make a move that everyone lauds and approves and it's going to blow up in their face. And I will be there smiling.
Go ahead and trade Garoppolo. And WHEN, not if, when Tom brady stops throwing footballs like a Greek God the Pats just might regret trading the young QB.
OR maybe Brady plays another 6 years and Jimmy G ends up languishing somewhere else. HE looks like the real deal though. I'd be leery of trading him.

There's no way in hell any team gets Jimmy for a lousy 2nd round pick. He was a 2nd round pick and now has 2 (or more) years of NFL seasoning under his belt AND he actually played well in a few games. Garoppolo should be traded for nothing less than a first round pick....I would insist on more if I am the Pats.
for QBs that were traded at a young age is probably about the same as QBs drafted in same round that traded QB was drafted in. For every Rob Johnson there is a Brett Favre. For every AJ Feely there's a Mark Brunell.
Qbs drafted very high can bust. QBs traded for a lot of chips can bust. It's the hardest position to get a read on. Doesn't mean a team is dumb for dealing picks if they love the guy. Some trades are dumb in hindsight but that QB was drafted pretty high for a reason. And then to get a crack at that same QB who has now had a chance to season in the NFL? That's gonna cost a team big. And it should.

I'm not saying the Patriots would agree, just saying what is being reported. CHI does not want to trade pick #3 for Garoppolo.
And value is hard to determine. Cassel went 11 - 5 and was traded for a 2nd and the Patriots had to throw in Vrabel, so who knows really. Garoppolo couldn't make it two games without being injured.
who knows with Belichick. I think they could have easily cut him, but when you read Pioli's comments after acquiring the pair he makes it seem he coveted both. Cassel to fill their franchise QB vacancy (LOL) and Vrabel to provide veteran leadership on the D.
Plus, in that D Vrabel was a LB and they just drafted Mayo, and still had Bruschi, Thomas and some younger guys.
Matt Cassel got the Patriots the 34th overall pick (and they had to throw in Vrabel). I hear that this is a 'deep draft', therefor a high second round is pretty valuable. I would think the Browns at 33, 49ers at 34, and Bears at 36 could make a decent offer of their 2nd round pick.
will return a lot to the Pats. He was a better prospect coming out than Cassel by a wide margin. And he did nothing to disparage his potential this past season.
Prepare yourselves. The Pats will get a lot in return.
Cassel was a mid to late round pick. IF he was a second rounder, then played well for a year he would have fetched more than the 2nd he did garner.
Just checked. Cassel was a 7th rounder.
Nassib was a 4th round pick he isn't getting a 4th back (if he was under contract), Mallett was a 3rd round pick for the Patriots, he got a 7th in a trade with the Texans.
I'm not putting Garoppolo in either's class, but just saying round picked doesn't necessarily impact what you get back if you trade them.
Cassel had 11 wins, like I said Garoppolo has 1.5 and couldn't make it through the second game after getting injured.
I like Garoppolo and think he ran that offense efficiently, but I'm not so convinced he's a franchise QB based on that small sample. That said, I would be less shocked to see him bust than I would be to see him win a playoff game.
They can trade Jimmy G, pick up some premium draft picks and then wait to see which QB drops to the bottom of the first round. If Watson, Trubisky or Kizer are sitting there within reach...they can grab a young guy to groom as a back-up and start the process all over again.
move would be to trade Brissett for a 2nd round pick and keep Garoppolo for 2017, franchise Jimmy in 2018 and then decide what to do with him in 2019 when Brady is 42.

Only problem is that no one is trading a 2nd round pick for Brissett, why would they?
Why? This isn't the NBA.
Pats needs to send Goodell and thank you card
Browns should close up shop if they give up that much.
Yup. Cleveland will do what the Rams and Eagles did last year. This is the NFL. Teams pursue QBs like Gollum pursued the ring. QBs are their precious.
brb, gonna try it on Madden

great analogy
I'm relatively less triggered by Pats' successes than most, but watching them profit on such stupidity of others will make it the more painful.

He's still signed, but likely to be cut shortly.

Don't think so. Vrabel was entering the final year of his contract with a non-guaranteed 2.2M left on his deal.

The funny thing is Cassel never even played in college. He spent his career at USC as a back up to Palmer and Leinhart.
When are they going to learn?

Unusual, but not unprecedented. Brad Johnson had a nice pro career and he rode the pine behind Casey Weldon, who was an NFL scrub, at Florida State.
Just one game, Eli. Thats all we needed. But you had to go and be an iron man.
Where is Tonya Harding when you need her.
