Market may go up over the years but I'd think if Giants are able to sign JPP before free agency begins he'd be taken a discount to what he can receive on open market.
I think they do something like this to a) give JPP a huge number for the media and b) give the Giants an out as a 2yr $28m contract in a disaster and a 3yr $40m deal as the likely terms before renegotiation becomes a probability.
JPP forgoes FA to give the Giants a deal of basically 3 years $45 million. That is way to team friendly. He can easily get more stability elsewhere.
Not if he knows the team will tag him for $17M before they let him test the market. Then it comes down to a choice between one year for $17M or 3 years for $45M (with roughly $30M guaranteed).
How to get JPP the guaranteed money that can be reasonably expected to come his way in free agency while, at the same time, limiting the dead money hit in Years 4 and 5, should it become necessary to cut him due to performance/injuries?
The numbers I posted earlier (90% of Vernon money) include dead money of $7.2 million in Year 4 and $3.6 million in Year 5.
I particularly don't like that $7.2 million in Year 4 dead money.
No wonder NFL teams have a "cap-ologist".

If he gives the team three good years on a five year contract, the dead money won't be a significant issue. The key is getting three years out of him that were worth the money he was paid over that time period.
$42 Million Guaranteed. There will be competition and I do not envision a home town discount.
Considering OV's contract and not at all factoring for YOY inflation, $72M with $42M guaranteed would be a decrease of 15% and 20% respectively from OV. How is that not a hometown discount?
5 years, $80 Million
$50 Million Guaranteed
$22 Million Signing bonus
$8 million 1st year salary guaranteed ($12.4M cap hit)
$9 million 2nd year salary guaranteed ($13.4M cap hit)
$11 million 3rd year salary guaranteed ($15.4M cap hit)
$14 million 4th year salary, becomes fully guaranteed if on team on March 1st of that year ($18.4M Cap hit)
$16 million 5th year salary, becomes fully guaranteed if on team on March 1st of that year ($21.4M cap hit)
Team would save $3.6 million by cutting him after year 3
Team would save $11.6 million by cutting him after year 4

I would take 17 for 1 year if that's my option. 3 years for 45 isn't enough. It will only be around 25 guaranteed. So JPP won't bet on himself 1 more year over 8 million? He can make 17 million this season (doesn't have to show up from training camp and preseason) and if he comes out of this year healthy he will get a contract that will far exceed the 2 years 30 million that would be remaining. I can't see him signing for so little. He's a great DE.
Anyway, my guesstimate:
5 years 90 mill, 42.5 guaranteed
The market usually goes up over the years, guys. Vernon pulled 5/85/52.5
JPP didn't earn a smaller contract than OV.
Yr1: 1m (Guaranteed)
Yr2: 7m (Guaranteed)
Yr3: 12m (Guaranteed 1st March 2018)
Yr4: 16m

Discount JPP by 10% due to age and injury history.
