I thought that was an NBA tactic. Does the CBA allow that?
Pretty sure you can, at a minimum, tag a player and then trade his rights to another team, which can then sign him. Basically sign a tagged player to an offer sheet and then offer compensation (rather than the 2 firsts) to the Redskins not to match it.
Maybe make it a roster bonus year 1 and a subsequent signing bonus? The roster bonus then doesn't kick in until X days after the player is traded. No dead money if nothing was pro-rated.

I think the best example of the tag and trade tactic was the Jared Allen trade from the Chiefs to the Vikings in 2008.
Quote:
After leading the NFL in sacks in 2007 with 15.5, Allen was selected as a starting defensive end for the AFC in the 2007 Pro Bowl and was also named in the All-Pro team for 2007.
In February 2008, the Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Allen, giving him a one-year, $8.8 million contract for 2008.
On April 22, 2008, the Chiefs traded Allen to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a first-round pick and two third-round picks in the 2008 NFL Draft. The Vikings then signed Allen to a six-year contract, which at the time was the richest contract for a defensive player in NFL history. Allen was due an $8 million roster bonus in 2010, per the six-year, US$72.36 million contract he signed with the Vikings, and his signing bonus was $15.5 million.
But is it really a rumor? If I told you "I wouldn't be surprised" if the Redskins traded Cousins to the the QB-needy Niners who are now coached by a former offensive coordinator of Cousins, would you call that a rumor or speculation?

I should not have put Rumor. Should've just said "Cousins Trade to 49ers @ Combine? It would've avoided the semantics argument. My apologies to the board.
They've already got Kaepernick. Just use him and *gasp* run an offense that maximizes his ability instead of trying to turn him into a pocket QB.
There is an enormous amount of myopia and inertia in the NFL when it comes to team building.
I definitely agree here. Once the 35 and over crowd of QB's are gone this league is going to go through a transition as there just aren't enough "prototype" QB's to go around.
Free agency starts March 9 and deadline for franchise tags is March 1. So yes, he can be traded as Keith Yandle was 5 days before hockey free agency began this past summer.

He can't be traded unless he's franchised or signed and then can't be traded until March 9th I believe. The trade deadline is passed and the new league year hasn't started yet, and once the new league year starts he's a FA (or franchised or re-signed)
RE: The search for a franchise QB makes teams do stupid things
The 9ers didn't just wake up one morning and say fuck it, let's make it hard for Kaep.
Success on offense is staying ahead of the evolution of defenses aimed to stop you. It takes all 11 guys and it takes new ways, new plays, and new schemes to stay ahead. For the other 10 guys to do their job, the quarterback must be able to stay put for 3 seconds, watch the play develop and make a good decision.
Fuck it, I'm breaking the pocket isn't hard to defend.

What if an offense that maximizes his ability isn't good enough to win a Super Bowl?
Russell Wilson won one ring and almost won two. You can win with a "modern" QB.
Though I'm guessing Shanahan sees Kaepernick as RG3.5 and wants no part of it.

That's why Kaep sucks.
