NFT: MLB Adopts New Intentional Walk Rule

adamg : 2/22/2017 2:38 pm
No need to throw pitched to get the walk. Just a signal to the umpire.

Gary Sanchez's sac fly of the year for 2016 will live in infamy...

(Last thread was deleted for lacking NFT marker.)
Or when
giantsfan44ab : 2/22/2017 2:46 pm : link
Carlos Delgado (I think) hit a walk off single on an intentional ball on the Marlins.
A solution in need of a problem.
Mad Mike : 2/22/2017 2:53 pm : link
But those 1/3 of mlb games which see an intentional walk will be about 15 seconds shorter, so major progress made.

"This intentional walk brought to you by Blitzed. Blitzed....when you need a beer really bad, we've got a really bad beer."
That was a suggestion
mavric : 2/22/2017 3:19 pm : link
by Charles Finley decades ago. He had some good ideas that became the norm, like night games for the World Series, the DH, etc. But was laughed to scorn when he suggested using a hand signal for an intentional walk instead of throwing four pitches. What a difference a half century makes.
People overreact on both sides
giantsfan44ab : 2/22/2017 3:20 pm : link
Either the game is too long or "stop ruining the tradition". I don't really see how people can really get upset over this. It'll be weird, but who honestly gives a shit?
People are dumb: "This doesn't fix anything."
TheManUpstairs : 2/22/2017 3:21 pm : link
Long games aren't going to be fixed by ONE solution. It's going to be a bunch of things. The fact that 1 intentional IBB out of a million does something wacky isn't justification enough.
again according to the stats, there is an IW every 2.6 GAMES.
Victor in CT : 2/22/2017 3:38 pm : link
there were 932 intentional walks issued in 2016, or about two every five games -

I guess it's easier to APPEAR to be doing something than to actually force the umpires to enforce the rules that exist, i.e. 12 seconds max between pitches and keeping batters in the box.

Terrible awful idea
glowrider : 2/22/2017 4:02 pm : link
A lot of things can happen forcing the pitcher to throw the pitches. Someone mentioned Carlos Delgsdo.

Today, literally same day as announcement, Texas A&M won on a wild intentional walk pitch.
MLB Games Are Shorter Than NFL Games
Jim in Tampa : 2/22/2017 4:15 pm : link
If you take an informal poll of people seated near you at your next MLB game you'll find that very few, if any, think the games are too long.

In fact, the average MLB game is shorter than the average NFL game. (See link).

As already noted in this thread, if MLB really wanted to speed up the game (instead of just appearing like they're trying to speed up the game) they could make the pitcher deliver the ball quicker and limit the number of times a batter could step out of the box.

At least they're not going to try to enact the "runner starts out on 2nd base in extra innings" idea.

comparing a sport of 162 games
MetsAreBack : 2/22/2017 4:45 pm : link
and 11 wins to a title ...to a sport with 16 games and 3-4 wins to a title... is a pretty lousy comparison.

And we all complain about TNF, SNF and MNF games ending so late as it is... but obviously with just 8 home games a year, fans are far more tolerant/willing to waste so much time on it.

As far as "fans sitting next to me don't mind" - talk about a subjective, limited sample size analysis of the situation.

As was discussed on the prior thread, the simple answer is umps need to start enforcing rules whether players like it or not.
Want to shorten the games?
Stan in LA : 2/22/2017 5:36 pm : link
Limit the trips to the mound by the catcher to 1 an inning. That's it.

My point was, you either like the sport of baseball and want to watch a game that day or you don’t.

Even if MLB managed to cut another 30 minutes out of the average game, it’s not going to bring in tons of new fans, just because the games are now only 2 ½ hours long instead of 3.

For people attending the game it’s their evening’s entertainment. In my experience they don’t want the games to be shorter. (And I never claimed my informal survey had quantitative validity. I just suggested that people ask fans at the ballpark if they thought the games were too long, to see if they got the same results.)

For people watching at home, I can only assume that most will invest that time savings (from whatever MLB decides to do) watching something else on TV.

Also, comparing watching one’s favorite baseball team (like the Yanks or the Mets) where a fan really cares what happens to his/her team in EVERY game, to watching TNF, SNF and MNF, where a Giants fan likely doesn’t care much about who wins or loses, is a pretty lousy comparison too.

Yes...because the fans attending random regular season games are the ones the MLB is really struggling to get the attention of.
Good idea, Stan; or at least once for each pitcher that inning.
yatqb : 2/22/2017 5:59 pm : link
I recall that Willie Mays hit his 4th HR of a game on an attempted IBB. Seems a stupid rule to change. Do something that really impacts the length of games if you're gonna do anything.

Thats the difference between the NFL and the MLB. Random fans from other teams will spend time watching a football game that has no affect on their team. I am a Yankees fan and I can't tell you the last time I watched spending a regular season game the Yankees weren't playing.

My guess with these ploys by the MLB to shorten the game, they DO care if you just like the sport or don't.

It's amazing how many seemingly innocuous threads disappear from this site. There needs to be a repository like Reddit r/ undelete.

At least they solved that dupe problem!
This change kind of bothers me
xman : 2/23/2017 12:26 am : link
nothing that I would protest about but to save such little time isn't worth it.

It takes away the suspense waiting for that wild pitch or en the batter swinging at a close one.
This will have such a minimal impact
Matt M. : 2/23/2017 6:21 am : link
It will save about 1 minute ever 3 games or so. If they want to actually shorten the game, they need to enforce rules ready I place about time between pitches. A pitcher should have to get right back on the mound and batters should not be granted time after every pitch to fix their batting gloves, etc.

Forgot the NFT label. Which was a cardinal sin and caused outrage by the zero people who complained about it.
What about the fans attending games?
Cruzin : 2/23/2017 8:43 am : link

Less time between innings, shorter mound visits, automatic intentional walk signal. When are we supposed to hit the head?

Are they going to have a vendor walking around with boxes of Flomax?

Here's an idea, stop allowing teams to pay players ridiculous amounts of money that drives up ticket prices and dictates that MLB be a slave to TV contracts.

Leave the game alone.

Also limit mound visits, time per visit, and I would also limit the # of pitches a reliever can throw from the mound. They have already warmed up in the bullpen. I concede the need for a few pitches on the game mound, but they don't need more than 2-3.

Of course, this doesn't apply if a reliever is in to replace an injured pitcher.
