Charles Harris -- Defensive End out of Missouri...

M.S. : 2/23/2017 5:27 am
...just want to throw out an opinion that we could do a lot worse than selecting Charles Harris at #23!

I say that even though the Giants are fairly desperate to fix an offensive line beginning with their Left Tackle, who has become a big-time problem, with no clear view of what to do with him. Add to that a Center who was up-and-down in 2016; a nicked-up Left Guard... and blah, blah, blah, you get the idea.

So, why Charles Harris at 23?

I saw 4 Missouri games over the past two years and here's my amateur appraisal:

1) This guy is a non-stop, thick set end who doesn't quit. Have no idea how fast he is, but he looks like he knows the snap count and gets out of the blocks like a sprinter;

2) Multiply his first 3-step speed with his size and you've got a brute force problem on your hands;

3) He attacks with great leverage and uses his hands like a Kung fu Master;

4) Fantastic body control to make himself small darting around and under Left Tackles.

I loved our defense last year, and the amazing strides it took in restoring pride and respectability. But whether JPP stays or goes... doesn't matter. We need more pass rushing capability on this roster. Charles Harris is ready-made in my opinion.
He may not even be available at number 23

I have seen several mock drafts with Harris selected before the Giants pick at number 23.
The more I think about it
bigblue12 : 2/23/2017 9:18 am : link
the more it makes sense to possibly let JPP walk and draft a DE in round 1. I like Harris and the more I watch I also really like Carl Lawson. If we can re-sign Hankins and get a guy like that in round 1, I think the rotation of Harris/Lawson, Owa and Okwara can be ok if you have Vernon, Snacks and Hankins on the line next to them.
Need to see how he tests

Missou has been pumping out good defenders but many have not been 4-3 DEs, with the exception of my old fave Kony Ealy.
I'm sure he'll be in the mix...

Along with other DEs/ERs, regardless of what happens with JPP.

Lawson and Harris aren't in the same stratosphere as JPP.
and they will not be compensated at $15 million per year

which is why it is an option. When you are paying premium money to one DE, and possibly two DT's, a low cost option at the other spot makes sense.
My point all along
LakeGeorgeGiant : 2/23/2017 9:47 am : link
has been that DE is a premium position that the Giants will spend premium dollars on. If the choice is between paying two edge rushers or two DTs the Giants will spend the cash on JPP.
Very

nice player. Excellent rip, spin, and swim moves, with strong, heavy hands that he uses to disengage from blockers. Not really a bend the edge player, but an excellent bull rusher. Relentless in pursuit. Needs to do better recognizing run plays. Over pursues, and loses gap integrity. Fine pick at #23.

Exactly. Mind boggling to me that people want to throw huge $$ at 2 DEs.
It's about how a 4-3 is built
JonC : 2/23/2017 10:37 am : link
around DEs less than "wanting" to throw big dolers at two DEs.
I haven' seen him play, but I read that he can't play the run

Mizzou produces good pass rusher's

I would love for SY'56 to let us know how he stacks up to former Mizzou pass rusher's, particularly Shane Ray.
Ray is the tweener type

we want to avoid.

They play a 3-4.
Don't think he's big enough to play base end

For the 4-3 scheme
Sy'56 : 2/23/2017 12:26 pm : link
he is a situationally player that won't win with any power. He is a movement-only pass rusher. Have to be weary of those. There is some Demarcus Lawrence in him, though.
