I did not want to start the actual deadline thread (that is for the veterans here). Anyway - a few smaller deals have occurred and I am sure there is some anxiety from all our hockey fans leading up to Wednesday
Michael Stone was traded to Calgary for picks
Ron Hainsey was traded to Pittsburgh (former Canadien/Ranger prospect Danny Kristo was involved)
https://twitter.com/penguins/status/834786465385238528 -
and in a smaller deal (swap of former Ranger defensemen's sons). Keegan Lowe was traded for Philip Samuelsson.
pjcas - a lot of Canadiens alumni/news here.
Dreger/#NYR: "It seems like theyre maybe zeroing in on Brendan Smith of the Detroit #RedWings." (Brief, near end)
Unless AV is willing to sit Klein/Girardi, it doesn't make sense.
Flipping him to the right side and benching Holden seems unlikely and is also not an upgrade worthy of giving up anything.
Like the player, but confused by what it accomplishes in isolation. Coupled with some other moves, could be an OK step.
Unless this is a pre-cursor to another move, I don't see why.
I'm not sure how to explain it, but his entire game is off. shooting% is ridiculous, better hope it's a blip or that's the kind of deal that can really hamstring an NHL team.
Fuck the Kings.
Anyway, latest Cup probabilities. I imagine they take into account ease of divisional playoffs which is why Montreal is still 14:1 to win. Surprised to see NYR and CBJ same as Pittsburgh.
Bruins & Panthers seem like decent odds given they'd have relatively easy first round opponents (maybe each other, and then either home vs WC-1 or at Canadiens which both teams can handle). Islanders far worse odds (and Florida worse) than Tampa Bay doesn't make any sense.

they're one team whose odds reflect the fact the odds makers/casinos don't want to lose their buildings if somehow the Canadiens win a cup.
I haven been trying not to buy into Columbus, but man, they're a solid team. Interested in seeing them in the playoffs.

Steve Ott is all sandpaper and not much else. Boyle is a significantly better player IMHO.
He's also very good on faceoffs. Just ask him. Plus he knows hockey etiquette

I think he's a good #2.
What do you mean by #2? Second pair RD or top pair RD? big difference for me.
I don't want him on my top line and neither do the Blues. He gets 5 min less per game than Pietrangelo.
Tory Krug is a second pair LD, a finesse 2nd pair LD, and I think he's similar to Shattenkirk in every way except height (and the obvious RH/LH).
Yes, Shattenkirk is a top 4 D on most teams, I think the trade assets and contract will be a huge overpay.
I mean a #2 as a top pairing guy. Meaning, a great fit with McDonagh. I think Trouba can be a #1 caliber guy on a Cup winner, in comparison. Don't think Shattenkirk is that guy.
I think his contract could be a disaster in years 4 and beyond. I think giving up assets could also be a mistake.
I don't think our valuations are as far off as it seems.
Who the hell gets mumps? The only people I've ever heard of having mumps are hockey players.

One confirmed player with mumps, 5 others with symptoms consistent with mumps. Yuck.

a lot of foreigners who didn't have MMR vaccine requirements in their home countries.

Hmm maybe Trump should issue an updated travel ban for our public safety (rolls eyes).

League sources have independently confirmed that the 28-year-old pending unrestricted free agent turned down the offer. The Blues are now believed to be shopping Shattenkirk as a rental player, according to those sources, meaning they dont expect him to sign a long-term deal with another club before the NHL trade deadline Wednesday.
An extension elsewhere would allow the Blues to maximize his trade value, whereas being dealt as a rental will not garner the team as much in return.
The Post-Dispatch reached Jordan Neumann, Shattenkirks agent, Thursday night but he declined comment. Blues general manager Doug Armstrong was unavailable. The swap of Shattenkirk would have been with an Eastern Conference team and believed to be the Tampa Bay Lightning, with whom the Blues have long been speculated to be in trade talks.

Is this going to be one of those NYR specials where the player wants to be traded but will only accept a trade to the NYR and completely handcuffing the GM?
Dave - the last time that happened, the Rangers still gave up a lot in draft picks. I think the Callahan negotiations complicated the trade more than it was known. One of those draft picks I think eventually went to the islanders? It might have been Anthony Beauvillier.
Personally, I hope the Rangers resist. Like mentioned, I'm not sure if he moves the needle that much.
Its interesting how people view their own team. As an islanders fan you see an NYR advantage but I think the league and other GMs think the Rangers are an easy team to call when they want to rebuild. I thought the Rangers fate the last 2 years would have been the same without Yandle or Eric Staal.
I don't think Shattenkirk winds up here at the deadline and I think he'll price himself out of the Rangers
Besides we need to save money for Tavares in 2018. IM JOKING GUYS (ducks for cover)
Staal was two seconds and a good prospect.
I'd be surprised if some other team doesn't throw at least a first at STL just for the playoffs. I'd rather give a first for Shattenkirk than trade a second for Hainsey if I'm Pittsburgh.
As for the Islanders - the Duchene talk has quieted a bit. I was trying to find a source of where they are deploying their scouts.
With the rash of injuries to key Fs in playoff-bound Ottawa, I think that's where Duchene ends up. However, I'm not sure what prospects Ottawa might use to get it done, maybe more a question for Andy.

Wow, that's a huge giveup.
Bishop is UFA is why I'm guessing Tampa got such minimal return. Don't think he's in the draft since a FA?
Still odd LA trades for him day quick comes back. They must be concerned quick won't reinjure.
Does a realistic return even exist. I'm curious what the islanders give him. Isles guys what are the numbers you're hearing? North of 10 mill/per.
I just finished throwing up in my mouth thinking about Tavares being traded, and then having that gasbag Snow making this deal.
What about Toronto for Matthews?
As for contract #s, I have heard $10M/per as the number, but Stamkos taking a below market value deal certainly factors in. The Canadian media has already proclaimed "no one will take a deal like Stamkos again", but I'm not certain since they play their favorites, as you know. JT isn't a "me" guy - which doesn't mean he's naive to his worth and knows this is a business - but I also think he understands the big picture and the need for a team to have financial flexibility. He's a huge part of the franchise, but certainly deserves to be paid. Ledecky has stated loudly, several times, that they will re-sign him and knows it'll come at a deserved cost.

Absurd hypothetical: Tavares says he isn't re-signing next off-season and that they can trade him now if they want. What would he fetch in a deadline deal?

I don't think Tavares goes over $10 million. He isn't the type to kill the team's cap.
I'd be surprised and disappointed if Tavares took less than $12 a year. The elite players need to move this market higher, and its a sin that the cap hasnt risen in so long even as Dolan has been raising my ticket prices 6% per year for the past 5 years.
Separately - sounds like Brian Boyle to the Leafs is imminent. Surprised Tampa is throwing in the towel it seems on their season.
At least get rid of seidenberg for a bag of pucks and at least give us pulock.
I'd pass on that. I wanted a proven playoff guy like Boyle. The only other move is to get another top forward like duchene but knowing garth, we'll get some guy like tyler kennedy for no reason.
And the rumor is that Garth is close with Tavares and the owners now so this guy isnt even worried about losing his job.
Per Canadiens: The Canadiens acquire defenseman Jordie Benn from the Dallas Stars, in return for Greg Pateryn and a 4th-round pick in 2017.
The #Sens are sending Johnathan Dahlen in return for Burrows.

Pretty shitty trade for the Senators. Burrows sucks and Dahlen was a second rounder last year whose stock has only improved. He's having a great year over there in Sweden.
