I did not want to start the actual deadline thread (that is for the veterans here). Anyway - a few smaller deals have occurred and I am sure there is some anxiety from all our hockey fans leading up to Wednesday
Michael Stone was traded to Calgary for picks
Ron Hainsey was traded to Pittsburgh (former Canadien/Ranger prospect Danny Kristo was involved)

and in a smaller deal (swap of former Ranger defensemen's sons). Keegan Lowe was traded for Philip Samuelsson.
pjcas - a lot of Canadiens alumni/news here.
LOL. That's the way the NHL playoffs are. they still hate Scott Walker in Boston, he scored the game 7 OT goal for Carolina in 2009.
Most hockey fans don't know who Scott Walker is. Bruins fans do (and thankfully so do I)
At the same time, I understand why they passed on it and will certainly enjoy presumably having a first rounder again. But that's why I would have been willing to do it.
The Capitals currently do not own a 2nd round pick in 2018. They traded that pick in the summer for Lars Eller.

But considering how we've drafted, even in later rounds, it seems to me to make sense to gather as many picks as we can rather than giving them up for rentals as we've done time and again, w/o a Cup to offset it.
Do the Rangers have a higher probability of the team competing now or with Lundqvist on the decline (if you assume he will) in 2020 or 2021 at his cap hit? Where are the sources of cheap cap hits then when the team already traded the next JT Miller/Brady Skjei's for MSL/Yandle? Hayes, Miller, etc. will be paid by then.
I think the next 3-4 years are the realistic window IMO.
BTW, impressive to be this wrong this quickly.
But what really makes my blood boil is they got him cheaper than what we paid for Eric Staal last year. A vastly inferior player with a limited NMC (or was it full?) that limited his trade partners to NYR, and yet we somehow paid more last year for him than what the best defender on the market went for this year (in a year with so many contenders looking for D help).
I'm just surprised the trade market hasnt been more active ahead of the Vegas draft. I guess GMs prefer to make the deals after the season / before the draft.
I'd still rather trade some of our forward depth with Klein for a young 2nd pair RHD that we would then protect in the offseason with McD and I guess Staal (while buying out Girardi)

Whole list of conditions in the Shattenkirk trade but that conditional 2nd round pick is for 2019, not 2018

Blues get that 2nd RD pick if Caps sign Shattenkirk or if Caps reach conference finals and Shattenkirk plays in at least 50 percent of games

And Caps purposely chose getting out of their toughest round (Penguins) as precursor to that extra pick
This is a concern for me. This is what caused me to be agitated about the Eric Staal trade. I think the league tries to pry more from the Rangers than other teams. Maybe when you look at your own team, you tend to be critical. It "seems" that teams ask for much more than they do the Rangers.

Dont know anything about him, any insight?

hahaha pjcas. I forgot about that one.

he is a left handed shot and ideally NYR would want a righty. I am not enamored with Smith but he has been linked to the Rangers. I would think there is a corresponding move if Smith is coming to the Range.
Cody Franson?
Might mean that Ladd and/or Chimera injury is worse than they thought and they aren't making the trip. Both had been playing really well lately too.
Silver lining is that I'm excited to see what JHS can do.
Not player service time I don't believe. A game played is a game played.
I think it has to do with waivers and call-ups, something to do with how long the player can remain on the team without having to pass through waivers to get sent back down, depending on their status.
I had an exchange with Staple and he seems to think Quine is the issue.
I am still happy Gorton held out on Shattenkirk even though our D depth is thin.

OFFICIAL: #NYR Dan Girardi is expected to be sidelined 10 days to 2 weeks (ankle).
^^^ pjcas - see what I am saying about teams asking more from the Range? I understand these are unconfirmed but sometimes it feels the Rangers are the supermarket for rebuilding teams.
If that's really true, then it's a joke that they then gifted him to the Caps for pennies.
Rangers do not own a 2nd rd pick this year but have 2 in 2018.
