NFT: NHL Pre-Deadline Discussion

Drewcon40 : 2/23/2017 10:51 am
I did not want to start the actual deadline thread (that is for the veterans here). Anyway - a few smaller deals have occurred and I am sure there is some anxiety from all our hockey fans leading up to Wednesday

Michael Stone was traded to Calgary for picks
Ron Hainsey was traded to Pittsburgh (former Canadien/Ranger prospect Danny Kristo was involved)
https://twitter.com/penguins/status/834786465385238528 -

and in a smaller deal (swap of former Ranger defensemen's sons). Keegan Lowe was traded for Philip Samuelsson.

pjcas - a lot of Canadiens alumni/news here.

LOL. That's the way the NHL playoffs are. they still hate Scott Walker in Boston, he scored the game 7 OT goal for Carolina in 2009.

Most hockey fans don't know who Scott Walker is. Bruins fans do (and thankfully so do I)
I'd be
Giantfootball025 : 2/27/2017 10:35 pm : link
hesitant to trade Grabs. But if we got a young puck moving D and some picks you'd have to consider it.
Considering the play of Miller and Skjei, why would any Ranger
yatqb : 2/27/2017 10:37 pm : link
fan want us to keep giving away picks? One thing we have is great amateur scouting, yet we have routinely traded away high picks for rentals. Seems a stupid strategy to me.
Because the team has managed
Kyle in NY : 2/27/2017 10:51 pm : link
to replenish its lineup with young talent through various means even after trading those picks. And the improvement from Girardi to Shattenkirk on the top pair would be big enough to potentially help the team get through the East. I'd trade a pick in the late 20s for that.

At the same time, I understand why they passed on it and will certainly enjoy presumably having a first rounder again. But that's why I would have been willing to do it.
Here is a strange wrinkle in the Shattenkirk trade

ESPN reported the Blues will receive a first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, [b]a conditional second-round pick in 2018[b] and left wing Zach Sanford.

The Capitals currently do not own a 2nd round pick in 2018. They traded that pick in the summer for Lars Eller.

Kyle, we certainly have been helped by Hayes and Vesey,
yatqb : 2/27/2017 11:04 pm : link
and have hit on a bunch of later round guys, somewhat unusual in the NHL draft. But you can't count on signing guys who refuse to sign with the team that drafted them. That's not a strategy; it's just a great break.

But considering how we've drafted, even in later rounds, it seems to me to make sense to gather as many picks as we can rather than giving them up for rentals as we've done time and again, w/o a Cup to offset it.
I don't consider Yandle and MSL to be true rentals
Kyle in NY : 2/27/2017 11:07 pm : link
And we don't have a cup but they got us close. Sometimes it's worth the risk. I'd have done it, they didn't. So we move forward. Interested to get a better look at Shattenkirk now in the east.
I'd count them, but I can see your point.
yatqb : 2/27/2017 11:17 pm : link
But I also think of Staal and Clowe as examples of terrible deadline deals.
.....
BrettNYG10 : 2/27/2017 11:26 pm : link
I think the difference between those deals and now is that Lundqvist is going to be 35 in a few days. How long do we realistically expect him to be elite?

Do the Rangers have a higher probability of the team competing now or with Lundqvist on the decline (if you assume he will) in 2020 or 2021 at his cap hit? Where are the sources of cheap cap hits then when the team already traded the next JT Miller/Brady Skjei's for MSL/Yandle? Hayes, Miller, etc. will be paid by then.

I think the next 3-4 years are the realistic window IMO.

BTW, impressive to be this wrong this quickly.
I'm not sure how much Shattenkirk actually helps Washington
MetsAreBack : 2/28/2017 8:31 am : link
it was a smart move on their part because 2 of his 3 most valuable landing spots were Pittsburgh and NYR (Boston being the third). Good keepaway strategy.

But what really makes my blood boil is they got him cheaper than what we paid for Eric Staal last year. A vastly inferior player with a limited NMC (or was it full?) that limited his trade partners to NYR, and yet we somehow paid more last year for him than what the best defender on the market went for this year (in a year with so many contenders looking for D help).

Bottomline is we still need D help
Torrag : 2/28/2017 8:42 am : link
But there's still time. One way this helps us is it set the compensation bar low for this trade period. St. Louis really didn't get much.

I'm just surprised the trade market hasnt been more active ahead of the Vegas draft. I guess GMs prefer to make the deals after the season / before the draft.

I'd still rather trade some of our forward depth with Klein for a young 2nd pair RHD that we would then protect in the offseason with McD and I guess Staal (while buying out Girardi)

Whole list of conditions in the Shattenkirk trade but that conditional 2nd round pick is for 2019, not 2018

Blues get that 2nd RD pick if Caps sign Shattenkirk or if Caps reach conference finals and Shattenkirk plays in at least 50 percent of games

highway robbery
MetsAreBack : 2/28/2017 8:56 am : link
Blues should be ashamed.

And Caps purposely chose getting out of their toughest round (Penguins) as precursor to that extra pick

This is a concern for me. This is what caused me to be agitated about the Eric Staal trade. I think the league tries to pry more from the Rangers than other teams. Maybe when you look at your own team, you tend to be critical. It "seems" that teams ask for much more than they do the Rangers.
Complete and vehemently disagree

he is a left handed shot and ideally NYR would want a righty. I am not enamored with Smith but he has been linked to the Rangers. I would think there is a corresponding move if Smith is coming to the Range.

Cody Franson?

Might mean that Ladd and/or Chimera injury is worse than they thought and they aren't making the trip. Both had been playing really well lately too.

Silver lining is that I'm excited to see what JHS can do.
Islander guys...
Drewcon40 : 2/28/2017 9:52 am : link
...could it be a roster move prior to a trade? Admittedly, I am not sure what constitutes an Emergency basis call up versus a call up. (Is it service time?)

Not player service time I don't believe. A game played is a game played.

I think it has to do with waivers and call-ups, something to do with how long the player can remain on the team without having to pass through waivers to get sent back down, depending on their status.
