NGT: Didn't see a discussion on Winston here

LCtheINTMachine : 2/23/2017 12:31 pm
What a ridiculous story. That clip is nuts! Telling he girls to sit down and the guys to be strong.

No wonder the NFL cleans the players' clocks in collective bargaining. These guys have rocks for brains. As long as they keep us entertained, I am OK with it.
Umm

who is the dumb ass that invited him? He said what he feels if you wanted another opinion have someone else come in. He was trying to reach out to the boys. Don't agree with the way he did it but its not that far off.
Who would have thought the rapist has views that women shouldn't speak

"All my young boys, stand up. The ladies, sit down," Winston said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. "But all my boys, stand up. We strong, right? We strong! We strong, right? All my boys, tell me one time: I can do anything I put my mind to. Now, a lot of boys aren't supposed to be soft-spoken. You know what I'm saying? One day y'all are going to have a very deep voice like this [in deep voice]. One day, you'll have a very, very deep voice.

"But the ladies, they're supposed to be silent, polite, gentle. My men, my men [are] supposed to be strong. I want y'all to tell me what the third rule of life is: I can do anything I put my mind to."

Jameis Winston
Nomad Crow on the Madison : 2/23/2017 10:57 pm : link
is highly respected in Florida. He speaks to groups for free frequently. The quote you heard was 30 seconds in a forty minute address to these school children, and he was trying to get one young boy engaged who was not engaged. He did not handle it perfectly, but he needs to be cut some slack here.

Strongly disagree. What he said was sexist on both sides and harmful for students to hear. It's everything I will try to avoid as a future responsible educator.

Not just sexist, it was misogynist. He basically told the girls to sit down and shut up and the boys that they can be whatever they set their mind to. It's disgusting.
Tough to say

But it's a cultural issue. Maybe this sheds light n that problem.
I'll take him at his word on this one
eclipz928 : 2/24/2017 9:02 pm : link
Apparently a couple of the boys in the classroom were visibly losing interest and he was trying to specifically get those boys more stimulated and involved in the discussion. It was just executed poorly.

What he said obviously sent out the wrong message and perpetuated some stereotypes about boys and girls - but he's a professional football player, not a professional motivational speaker. It's unrealistic to expect him to be a beacon of political correctness.
He should get them to do Play60

I don't buy it, it's damage control, and makes no sense. I get that he's a football player and not a public speaker, but all that means is that he wasn't skilled at masking his misogynist views. He is who he is. And who he is is a jerk.
He's spent his entire formative years in alabama

Again, more excuses. Do they not teach right from wrong in Alabama and northern Florida? Shouldn't we have higher expectations for someone with a college education? It's not like he has a moron IQ and can't be expected to process what he's learned in his 20+ years on earth same as you or I.

I'm not buying the "Officer Krupke" defense!
Deep down inside him, he's no good - ( New Window )

His education has nothing to do with this - let's stop pretending as if there isn't plenty of men out there with PhD's that have misogynistic views. Most men on this planet regardless of background to some extent have antiquated understandings of gender roles - so it shouldn't come as a surprise that a football player, of all people, has the mindset of a cave man.

The only issue here is regarding Winston's inability to show better restraint and judgment as he's communicating to a group of young impressionable minds - and yes, he deserves ridicule for his failures there even though expectations of him should have been low to begin with.

Although having a conversation whenever possible about what are healthy views of gender roles, and how to educate young people about it, certainly is completely appropriate and necessary - Winston's classroom appearance is probably not the ideal situation or target to launch a dialogue about these kind of issues.

Your idea of 'right' is probably different from what passes for 'right' down there.

I'm not making excuses, just pointing out the obvious cultural differences that have existed in this country since ever.

I think you have an unfairly low opinion of the south (or specifically Alabama/Florida). I'm not saying there aren't cultural differences, but they aren't so acute that it's the norm for southerners to believe boys can be anything they set their mind to, but girls need to sit down and shut up.

Winston is an adult and he doesn't have a moron IQ. Don't let him off the hook so easily.
p.s.--
Milton : 2/25/2017 12:13 pm : link
And when I say Winston isn't a moron, I mean that literally. Figuratively speaking he is a moron.
