What a ridiculous story. That clip is nuts! Telling he girls to sit down and the guys to be strong.
No wonder the NFL cleans the players' clocks in collective bargaining. These guys have rocks for brains. As long as they keep us entertained, I am OK with it.
"But the ladies, they're supposed to be silent, polite, gentle. My men, my men [are] supposed to be strong. I want y'all to tell me what the third rule of life is: I can do anything I put my mind to."
what an asshole

"All my young boys, stand up. The ladies, sit down," Winston said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. "But all my boys, stand up. We strong, right? We strong! We strong, right? All my boys, tell me one time: I can do anything I put my mind to. Now, a lot of boys aren't supposed to be soft-spoken. You know what I'm saying? One day y'all are going to have a very deep voice like this [in deep voice]. One day, you'll have a very, very deep voice.

Sounds like the bastid was born in 1894.
Strongly disagree. What he said was sexist on both sides and harmful for students to hear. It's everything I will try to avoid as a future responsible educator.
What he said obviously sent out the wrong message and perpetuated some stereotypes about boys and girls - but he's a professional football player, not a professional motivational speaker. It's unrealistic to expect him to be a beacon of political correctness.
His outlook on social issues is about what you'd expect.

I'm not buying the "Officer Krupke" defense!
Deep down inside him, he's no good - ( New Window )

Again, more excuses. Do they not teach right from wrong in Alabama and northern Florida? Shouldn't we have higher expectations for someone with a college education? It's not like he has a moron IQ and can't be expected to process what he's learned in his 20+ years on earth same as you or I.

His education has nothing to do with this - let's stop pretending as if there isn't plenty of men out there with PhD's that have misogynistic views. Most men on this planet regardless of background to some extent have antiquated understandings of gender roles - so it shouldn't come as a surprise that a football player, of all people, has the mindset of a cave man.
The only issue here is regarding Winston's inability to show better restraint and judgment as he's communicating to a group of young impressionable minds - and yes, he deserves ridicule for his failures there even though expectations of him should have been low to begin with.
Although having a conversation whenever possible about what are healthy views of gender roles, and how to educate young people about it, certainly is completely appropriate and necessary - Winston's classroom appearance is probably not the ideal situation or target to launch a dialogue about these kind of issues.

Your idea of 'right' is probably different from what passes for 'right' down there.
I'm not making excuses, just pointing out the obvious cultural differences that have existed in this country since ever.

Winston is an adult and he doesn't have a moron IQ. Don't let him off the hook so easily.
