Carlos Henderson the next Odell Beckham Jr.?

GiantsAlwaysAndForever : 2/23/2017 1:39 pm
Some interesting game tape on Henderson. Wins in a lot of the same ways as OBJ. Breakaway speed, high-pointing the football, ridiculous lateral agility in the open field.

This wouldn't be the first time the Giants saw something that other teams are missing. Right now he's moving up draft boards fast, but after his Combine, I expect Henderson to go in Round 1. Don't be shocked if the Giants can't pass up on his value at 23.
8 ways Carlos Henderson should remind Giants fans of OBJ - ( New Window )
That's the comp I get when I watch his highlights...

I think the comparison undersells OBJ's greatness. Henderson may end up being a very good player, and I'm reserving some judgement until after the combine, but I see where some are making the comparison... and I see that he has similar skills, just not on the level of OBJ. For example, I think his lateral agility and change of direction is good, I think OBJ's is phenomenal. Some of this is going to come down to physical attributes as well. OBJ has long arms and big hands for his body... essentially, he has the arms and hands of a much bigger receiver, without sacrificing any speed and quickness that smaller receivers usually have. I don't think Henderson is going to have those physical measurables.

Will be curious to see how Henderson matches up on the timed, athletic measurables as well.
I see it as well

Though he doesn't have obj tracking ability or closing speed. That extra burst on the deep route to make the big catch.
Great speed, big mouth, no hands ?

We have one of those already.
Carlos Henderson

I think there are similarities in style of play to Beckham, but I think it is quite a reach to call Henderson the next Beckham.

I like the kid, but let's see how he goes in the rest of the pre draft process.
Boylehart wrote this comparison about him about two weeks ago
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 2/23/2017 3:14 pm : link
and now other "writers" and "analysts" are all of a sudden seeing this. Kid looks like he has a lot of potential but as Boylehart said in his writeup, Henderson was doing it against a lower level of competition and OBJ did it against the SEC.

Who knows he could be great or a bust. Certainly poses a lot more risk than OBJ did.

These comparisons are always kind of silly to me.

Odell Beckham Jr wasn't even the next great WR coming out of college.

Actually I never watched OBJ's tapes until after the draft. Then I was impressed. But I think our slot receiver, Shepard will be very good also.
Not really
Sy'56 : 2/23/2017 3:54 pm : link
Similarities are they both are competitive, good straight line burst, 4.4 ish speed. Play bigger than they are.

But Beckham as a prospect far exceeded hands, ball skills, route running, lateral burst.

And Beckham did it in the SEC for multiple years.

Henderson looks awesome after the catch

Can't see him going ahead of Kupp or Jones unless he really kills the combine.
Boylhart makes the comparison as well...

Carlos has talent similar to Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. He has that type of speed and quickness in and out of his breaks. He shows the acrobatic body to adjust to the ball in the air and the hands to one catch the ball or two catch the ball while being contested....Carlos might remind me of Odell Beckham but putting up numbers like 232 total receiving yards against Western Kentucky and 326 total receiving yards against Massachusetts really doesn’t compare to putting up the numbers Odell did against SEC competition. Nevertheless you have to have talent at any level to put up those types of numbers as a receiver. The combine will be big for Carlos along with his workouts too. Getting speed numbers on this kid will be very important for him to move up in this draft. His film is very impressive.

If the Giants make the selection I'll be happy. I don't know enough about him as a prospect to conclude based on these clips that he's worth #23, but I trust them with that decision. WR is a premium position these days and the best ones almost always go in the first 30 picks or so. The clips do suggest to me a ton of talent and I'm okay with spending a premium resource on the position.

Having said that, it's my opinion that upgrading WR is one of the least important fixes for this offense. Yes, an upgrade will improve results, as any upgrade would. But last year the WR's were not the problem, as opposing defenses demonstrated. They routinely played two-deep against our 11 personnel, leaving only 6 men in the box. Switching Cruz out for a better receiver won't change that.

We need to make sure we can beat the 6-in-the-box looks consistently so we can force the safeties into the box. This means upgrading OL, RB, and TE.

Pass.
How can they even know
JOrthman : 2/23/2017 7:53 pm : link
No one knew OBJ would be as good as he is until we got him otherwise he would of been the #1 pick.
I think the comparison comes for his suddeness
rasbutant : 2/23/2017 8:12 pm : link
He moves like Odell and makes people miss like him.

Odell finds a way to make the catch and adjust to the ball very well. Henderson hasn't displayed the hands of odell, at least that i have seen. In the games i watched i saw him not catch a ball throw behind him, drop a pass that hit him in the chest, and fail to track a long ball and also to have that extra burst at the end to accelerate under the ball. All hard things to do, (well except the ball that hit him in the chest) but these are plays that Odell makes and why he is so great.
We shouldn't draft a WR that high
