If you think that a writer wrote an article that he or she knew was 100% false (they made it up) to deliberately deceive the public, then yes, it's fake news.
However, it's much more likely that the initial report was speculation based on JPP's Twitter (or was it Instagram) post, where he talked about going back to NJ and added a number of $$$$ at the end. Also, another defensive player (Jack Rabbit?) posted something about how happy he was that they were keeping the Giants' D together.
So no...It's not fake news.
I wasn't looking to get into a real dispute about fake news
Everyone wants to extend Pugh - but why would he want to? his value is down coming off injury and struggling late in the year. he'd probably rather just hit the open market unless we blow him away, and why would we right now?
Everybody is starving for positive football news, and any type of rumor can set off a frenzy. If nothing else, this latest rumor kept BBI entertained for a couple of day.
the contract could be agreed to or even signed. Then Reese asked JPP not to announce yet to give Reese some unknown advantage (to me.) Maybe JR wants other teams to waste time figuring what they could possibly offer JPP or even the Giants if he were tagged.
I'm almost 100% sure something good (if you like JPP) has already happened.
It's not fake until CNN reports it or the president tweets that it is
when you consider MG's note about $12M per and than Ranaan's note about $15M per ...
Jon, I'm thinking something big happened already causing JPP to fly & tweet. Jenkins called JPP and he got tipped off that the D would be together again. Then both 20-something years olds were told to put a lid on it.

That's my non-asshat best guess.
It could be, but then I'd expect something else to have leaked by now.
I still don't think the tweets/posts from JPP and Jenkins were meaningless. Until I hear of an alternative explanation to what they meant, I'm going on the assumption that a verbal agreement is in place and it's only a matter of dotting t's and crossing eyes.

Yes, Pugh may want to play this year at his 8.5 cap number and cash in next year. The risk there for him is the unlikely event that he could have a catastrophic injury, and a bigger concern would be that a poor showing this year diminishing his value further.
A new contract this year might be less lucrative than it could be next year, but a nice bonus check and security might be intriguing for him.
The Giants might like to extend him to lower the cap number this year, but that assumes that they are ready to commit to him long term.
Honestly, I'm not sure what is going to happen with Pugh. If I had to guess I'd say he plays out this year on his current contract.

My guess is that JPP and Jenkins thought it was closer than it actually is and jumped the gun a bit.
I won't believe it until I see something from slade.
The franchise tag. They can keep him off the open market. Yes, yes, I realize we would all love it if the leverage someone had over us was that they could force us to accept a one year contract for $17M, but it's not like JPP is saying bring it on.
Um this is the leverage in a nutshell
JPP doesn't want franchise tag much more than we don't want him to count 17 mil against the cap. It is really easy since JPP says he wants a OV type contract and we probably would pay him about 13 mill a year in a long term. You don't have to be a football executive to see who has the more to lose by not signing long term deal with Giants.
