The Mets are expected to play Michael Conforto, Wilmer Flores, Travis dArnaud, Juan Lagares and top prospect Amed Rosario. Manager, Terry Collins could not be more ready to start getting some games underway. Its time, Collins said. I think weve got to get guys out there and start playing.
piece on Viola by Rubin today. Viola will get a big league job with someone soon. His track record is too good. Hate to see him go but Warthen is pitching coach for life unless/until he retires.
I was worn out at the end of last season for some reason (probably due to all the injuries and us coming down the stretch with duct tape) but everyone's back and we seem to be much better equipped with depth this year. I also think the amount of injuries we suffered was way outside the norm of an "expected amount" in a normal year.
sort of felt the same way. So many injuries that it went from a year with huge expectations to a year where we were counting on absolute turds like James Loney. I dunno, for whatever the reason it wasn't a fun year for me Mets wise (and I've enjoyed bad seasons before).
might be BSing but he made it sound like Cespedes won't play in any road games (in ST obviously)
Plan for now is Ces and Wright to only play home games. During road games Wrig will get extra ABs in the minor league games.
Thanks Shecky. I'll be honest as HUGE of a Mets fan as I am I don't really care about big leaguers and spring training outside of "his velocity is down" or "he looks great". I don't care if they win ST games etc.
Just felt exhausting and mostly disappointing which is kind of strange considering how long we went with zero postseason appearances. There were some silver linings though that emerged from the mountain of death. lol. Gsellman, Lugo, TJ Rivera, ect all got their feet wet and performed admirably. Im expecting big things this year with all the injured returning and guys like Rosario that much closer.
Wright makes the trips either. Wouldn't make much sense with his back. Granderson, Bruce, Cabrera, and Walker might go on a few trips but probably get preferable treatment more times than not as well.
As a big spring training guy (I live here) I'd much rather see the Rosarios and Smiths anyway. Seeing a Walker take some atbats doesn't do much for me.
about pitching and competing for a title every other year holds true, the Mets are going to have a big season.
If 2 out of Harvey, Wheeler, Gsellman and Lugo stay healthy and perform like they are capable, the rotation looks rock solid with Thor, JdG and Matz at the top.
Spring training is my favorite part of the year to me, though games and specifically results are completely meaningless. Craig Brazell proved it to me years ago lol.
This is the only time of the year for the little things. Everyone is optimistic. And my favorite part of it all is the young guys getting a chance to interact with the established guys. For a true diehard fan - they have to experience a couple days of the backfields and then some spring training.
Just love the idea of adding quality players "on the cheap" that are still available. In fact I'd bring in Pagan, Blanton AND KJ but that's not happening, I'll settle for Blanton/KJ. Blanton last 2 seasons
I know he is done, still surprised an AL team didnt take a chance on him.
I was mostly talking about guys the Mets could look at but yeah Howard is still unsigned, Peavy (another guy I would look at), Lincecum, Fuld, Reimold etc
While last year completely sucked from an injury standpoint, I almost feel like it was a necessary evil. This team now, seemingly, has depth all over the place and is better equipped to sustain injuries (i.e. Lugo, Gsellman, Reyes, Rivera). The depth will allow us to get through the dog days and hopefully less injuries and I believe this team is better overall than last year.

#Mets pitchers scheduled for today: Seth Lugo, Marcos Molina, Josh Edgin, Rafael Montero, Hansel Robles, Corey Taylor, and Logan Taylor.
And right there is exactly what I LOVE about early spring...
And the proven big leaguer coming off his standard season = the least intriguing of the day (Robles). Not that I'm that excited about Edgin but year 2 post TJ, out of options so his spring "matters".
I've always been a huge fan of these moves. Low risk, typically a good return. Problem is the roster crunch on the 40.
I'd see if I could a warm body lotto ticket from the lower minors from another team for an Edgin/Goeddel/both Riveras/Reynolds player to free up a spot for Blanton and Pagen. Prob looking at 2?$10 for each player - so ading $10mm of payroll.
I'd keep looking to move Legares AND Bruce until a fair enough deal comes along that fills another hole. That offsets the payroll. Nimmo and Conforto fill their roles with no pressure and step in when Granderson leaves.
Then if an arm does step up in the bullpen like Robles - I'd listen to offers for Reed for a deal a level below last years Chapman/Miller robberies.
I'm not expecting it, but I would love to see something click for Robles where he just 'gets it'. Always struck me as a guy who will flash and disappoint, but man would it be great if something clicked with him. I actually think it is vital that someone surprises and becomes a future great arm in the pen for the next few years.

But I'm not in charge - so aint happening lol
So you'd trade Reed? are you throwing in the towel on the season? Robles is your closer, and 8th inning is who? Salas? 7th inning Blevins? Or do you think Familia won't be suspended and the Mets don't need a closer?
I may have missed something you wrote and misinterpreted what you're saying, my mind is in a lot of places today, but I'm thankful you're not in charge.

Logan Taylor is an "extra" arm type but ya never know, a guy like that or McGowan etc can luck into 50-60 quality innings

PJ - I'm glad I'm not in charge either...
I'm still skeptical of Reed repeating. I think it is imperative he is replaced. My above hypothetical is signing Blanton, and someone steps up. With hose two, I'd listen to trades when Familia returns. Hopefully Reed has "proven himself" as a closer while Familia is away - and you move him at peak value. Last year "proved" to teams that overpaying for a top BP arm is "worth it". I'd love for the Mets to be in position to take advantage of that thought.

Well I think if the Mets are sellers of someone like Reed it would be a bad sign, it would mean they're sellers.
I am not confident Reed can close, so I too was concerned about the BP, mostly while Familia is out, but also in the post-season.
I'd prefer to be buyers at the deadline and add a Miller/Chapman, that back of the bullpen can be lethal.
People forget the Mets had the lead or were tied in every WS game in 2015 except game 2. Bullpen blew them all except the one deGrom game.
The Mets begin their Grapefruit League spring training schedule Friday. Tebow, who will play in both major league and minor league exhibition games, will have a press conference three days later at the Mets' camp in Port St. Lucie to discuss his progress.-Rubin
This is now the third spring where Herrera's shoulder was an issue. The Reds bought damaged goods. Bravo to @MetsGM, sad for Dilson #Mets
That's horrible to hear. Great kid, but if it's still an issue there is clearly something wrong, whether the docs are seeing it or not. How can a young kid who isn't a pitcher have a constant sore shoulder for three years?

I'm really surprised they haven't opted for surgery at this point. He was shut down and won't play for Colombia in the WBC
I pretty much stopped commenting about the Mets after the rash of injuries when my hopes were super high last season. The depth on this team is arguably better (check out the AAA potential position players they'll have, absolutely loaded) but I'm cautious now because of injury potentials ie wright, duda, pitchers, etc

Injuries are part of the game but at some point it just becomes obvious the remaining talent is not even on the same level as teams still in it. I mean the Mets "healthy" roster from 2016 vs. what the Cubs were running out there was like night and day.

Hard to elect surgery when you don't see anything wrong. I'm assuming that's still the case with the Reds. Not saying they are the same - but a parallel could be made to Montero.
Some players are more prone to worry about aches and pains. But three years of a shoulder? That's most likely a career ender for him which is horrible.
in mind this is 100% what was said last spring/early season and he had to DH because of it.
"GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Cincinnati Reds second baseman Dilson Herrera has pulled out of his commitment to Team Colombia and the World Baseball Classic after experiencing right shoulder soreness that will prevent him from throwing for the next several days. Shoulder issues also sidelined Herrera after he was acquired by the Reds at last year's deadline.
Reds manager Bryan Price said Herrera can still hit and take grounders, and that he'll serve as the designated hitter in Saturday's Cactus League game against the Cleveland Indians in Goodyear. The 22-year-old won't resume throwing until Monday at the earliest."

I think he's completely done but if he's willing to go to AAA then I'd be open to basically anyone with previous success. Much prefer Peavy though.
