NFT: Mother/Father's Day- National Holiday?

jc in c-ville : 2/24/2017 11:40 am
As our country continues to overwork both adults and school children alike, with diminishing time spent between the two, perhaps it is time to re-visit our fundamental values.

I'm 49 and remember how important the family structure was for me. As someone who is very close to my nieces who are in their early 20's, their lives were full of activities not related to the family and today, don't feel they are better off for it.

In a tech happy world full of cell phones, FB, Twitter- it appears the face-to-face communication is at an all time low.

Perhaps a stretch, but why not promoting the Monday after each a national holiday where kids can visit parents, or vice versa, with the understanding is simply, face-to-face communication.

Sure, it won't eliminate all the distractions we have but maybe, an opportunity to get back to the relationships that are most important.

when it comes to family life and something i'm sure we will fight tooth and nail with our daughter (18 months old) as she grows up. Our neighbors kids (5 and 9) are addicted to iPads, absolutely addicted. I know its great for car rides and has plenty of educational programs to enable, but man, the thought of my daughter starting at an iPad all day at 5 years old makes me want to puke.

She's obsessed with me now, I'll cherish it for as long as possible but it may not last too long.
Here's a novel thought - they're your kids, make them turn them off

Doesn't have to be for hours on end - but for a day at least, make them put them away. You don't need the government to do that either.

I agree, just scary to see the parents around you who don't do that.
Why don't

it so people have no work life balance whatsoever. My last job I was literally on call 24 hrs. a day. I took calls in the shower. I got calls at 4 in the morning and 10 at night. I was expected to check emails at all times.

Technology was supposed to make jobs easier, but in reality they have created ways to get 1 person to do 3 to 5 peoples jobs. It's one of the major reasons for an increase in heart attacks for people in their 30's and 40's because they literally cannot get away from work.
