NFT: Greece travel advice

widmerseyebrow : 2/24/2017 12:15 pm
Approximately 1 week + in April/May. Most likely driving in from Macedonia to the north but would consider another route (i.e. flying directly to Athens and skipping the stuff in between). Going with the wife who is expecting.

Which of the following is worth seeing in that time frame:
1. Meteora
2. Delphi
3. Athens
4. Santorini
5. Something else

Thanks in advance!
Advice - don't call it Macedonia, they don't like that.

As far as your sites - what do you want to do? Best beaches to relax? Archaeological sites? Nightlife?
I went last year

as part of my European tour honeymoon cruise. Athens was great, one of the best cities on our cruise. We were supposed to go to Santorini too, but weather didn't allow for it and I was very disappointed to miss out.
Haha so I hear

Wife is with child so no nightclubs. I trend towards beautiful, unique sites (nature or historical) she loves the beautiful beaches and relaxing. I know it's not enough time to hit everything so I guess I'm interested in everyone's must dos. Probably Athens and Santorini but wondering if anything else is worth squeezing in.

Athens for a day

wouldn't do more than that but it needs to be done. The Parthenon, etc is simply amazing.

Santorini is also a must and I would 100% recommend taking their sunset cruise.

The rest is up to preference and how much time you have. 7 days isn't a lot of time for Greece, the puddle jumpers are always delayed and even the fastest express shuttle from Mykonos to Santorini is 2-3 hours (add in an hour on both ends to get to the boat and to get to your hotel from the boat, half your day is gone).

If its closer to 10 days then I'd add in another location, probably Crete or a lesser known island. I enjoyed Mykonos but its skippable if you don't care about the party scene.
Santorini for 6 days

My wife and I went to Greece a long time ago- 1989- on our honeymoon. Santoroni was far and away the most fabulous place we have ever been. We stayed on the island for six days rather instead of the schedules three- we blew off Mykanos- with zero regrets. I would fly into Athens, take a quick tour to see the more popular sites, and hop a flight to Santorini. You will thank Spike and I upon your return.

Enjoy!! I am very jealous.
Same advice as others

You don't need more than a day or two in Athens. In addition. To the obvious sites, catch the changing of the guard at their Tomb of the Unknown. It's right in downtown Athens in front of the government building.

Santorini is absolutely gorgeous. I highly recommend NOT doing the donkey ride up or down. It's uncomfortable, takes too much time and smells. Use the gondola.

I liked Mykonos. We went to a beach off the beaten path and it was great. But spend more time in Santorini for sure.
My Greek advice is

go to Sicily or Southern Italy like Pulglia.
My now wife and I did all of those on our Greece trip...

and our top two were Meteora (really awesome) and Santorini (really beautiful).

Unfortunately, the two are in totally different parts of the country. Meteora you can definitely do in a day if you are in that area.

If you are driving down from the North, then I would say hit Meteora for a day, then drive and spend a half day in Delphi on your way to Athens. Spend the night and next day in Athens, then hop a boat to Santorini for whatever you have left.

got very nauseated and vomited in that speedboat ride from santorini to mykonos.

Definitely sit in the MIDDLE of the boat, where there is less up and down. We made the mistake of sitting in the first row.

But yeah just plop yourself in Santorini and enjoy life and sunset. The tomatoes there are amazing.

Sounds like I need to skew this thing towards Santorini.
I haven't been to Santorini
Koldegaard : 2/25/2017 8:12 am : link
But I have been to Crete 3 times and LOVED it each time.
The Knossos palace is great. So is the Samaria Gorge. And there are sooo many nice beaches. Google the pink beach (Elafonissi) might be spelled differently. Greece is wonderful :-)
Some great suggestions - including Elafonissos
jcn56 : 2/25/2017 9:56 am : link
Personally, although Santorini is a beautiful island, it lacks the thing I identify with Greece the most - blue water, white sand beaches. Santorini being a volcanic island, has gray-ish beaches, which are still every bit as clean but not as aesthetically pleasing as the others.

I'd try to hit at least one of Elafonisso, Paros (another low key but beautiful island, and the cost will be cheaper as well) or Rhodes (more touristy and expensive but every bit as beautiful).

Agree 100 percent! went for my honeymoon 3 years ago. Look into staying at the astra suites. Rent an ATV and explore and enjoy yourself.
