Johnathan Hankins, 24, Giants defensive tackle Why he's available: The Giants signed Damon Harrison to a huge contract in free agency in 2016, forcing Hankins to move from nose tackle to under tackle in their 4-3 front. Hankins was up for the challenge, but this was clearly a misuse of his talents. Combine that with the dollar figures New York is looking at paying up front, and somebody had to go. What he does offer: Hankins had three sacks in 2016 but had seven in 2014 and was injured for most of 2015. He is a nose tackle who checks a lot of the boxes NFL teams are looking for. He's still very young, he was dominant in his college career, and he has an amazing NFL season on his résumé. The past two years have been less impressive, but that might help curtail his earnings enough to be a bargain by the time the contract is signed. Even if Hankins winds up with $20 million in guarantees, he could still outperform that contract. |
I'm OK with the perception that he had a down year... if the talk was that he is a budding All-Pro, we probably wouldn't be able to afford to keep him!
Those who know, know.
But unrelated to this article Big Rick, I think the biggest rumor in FL is, that if JPP hits free agency, he's Coughlins first addition.
