NFT: New interview processes with companies?

bigblue1124 : 2/25/2017 10:14 am
I have been looking for work for a few months now have had a few interviews but unfortunately have not panned out for a few reasons some offers I have refused and others the interest was not there.

My question I was hoping to get some responses from is some of the new processes companies use to either filter applicants and or stream line the process. I have found more and more companies are using a cognitive online interviewing survey which is fine and understandable to weed out the meat heads applying for the position. But today I received a live video interview invite for a position I have applied for and apparently requires you to have a webcam in order to proceed with the process? After reading the process it apparently is not live for the company only the applicant and is recorded for the recruiter for later review.

Has anyone done something like this? For one I do not own a webcam so that is my first issue with this. But was curious on thoughts of this procedure? I myself see no value in it other than screening people on looks alone. I could understand if I was some CEO looking for a new company to call home, but I’m a Chef that’s it nothing special other than my food so why would a company have this process other than to see if you feel off the ugly tree and hit every branch?

Anyone who has had to do this I would like to hear your feelings on it?
I am half tempted to purchase a webcam put a nice shirt on and interview butt ass naked for no other reason than I can.

I've done a couple. Ended up moving to the next round

But didn't end up with either job (turned one down, didn't get the other). Both were sales positions btw.

They way mine were set up was you were given a question and then a set amount of time to prepare an answer and then a set amount of time to
Give your answer while being recorded.

It definitely feels weird talking outloud at your computer with no one there to actually listen. I think it's mostly used to weed out to people who think it's appropriate to make the video without looking as presentable as they would in a face to face interview and to see your communication skills. I definitely messed up some answers but they didn't seem to care
The interview/hiring process is time-consuming and tedious.

Most likely, this is done to standardize applicants and let a hiring manager review candidates at his/her own opportunity without having to figure out mutually available dates and times for interviews until the field is narrowed to 2-3 finalists.

Look at the bright side - you're getting a chance to be evaluated without the hiring manager distracted by the next meeting on their calendar and without an awkward hard stop. On the downside, you're not getting any real-time nonverbal feedback, but you are getting a chance to state your case uninterrupted. Treat it like a normal interview (to whatever degree you can) and be confident.

As for the webcam, you can probably get one pretty inexpensively. Alternatively, would the front-facing camera on your phone or tablet work?
I did something similar

The question would pop up on the screen and I had 20 seconds to think about my answer then a set time to provide/record my answer. No second chances. Hated it and bombed it.

I also had one that essentially gave me English and math questions that reminded me of the SATs. I had 20 minutes to answer as many as I could. I did very well. The next day I had to take the same test again only with a proctor via webcam.

I've been on both sides of the hiring desk. I hate these video ones and will never use it to fill a spot unless HR requires me to.
My initial reaction

Is that this process sets the employer up for discrimination claims. I could see someone trying to assemble a group of minorities together to see if they all get weeded out after the video interview.

It could just be my suspicious nature. If consulted I'd urge the employer to stop the process.

More to the OP's post, I've interviewed in the last few years and never encountered anything like this.
