Can he project to guard? Would he take a discount to stay in the area or be on a contender?
If the answers to those 2 are yes, then maybe you can bring him in. We have a window with Eli. This match up with Mangold's window.
Here is what we currently have...
Flowers - he needs to improve significantly and we need to bring in someone to challenge him.
Pugh - at worst he is our top 2 lineman. He has a propensity for missing some games. He has almost missed as many games in 4 years than Mangold has missed in 11.
Richburg - Top 2 lineman who regressed a little last year. There has been talk about an undisclosed injury.
Jerry - A free agent and everyone's whipping boy.
Newhouse/Hart - Newhouse ideally isn't a starter. Hart needs to improve but his best position may be right guard.
Suppose we sign Reiff. In the perfect world, Flowers wakes up and lives to his potential. Reiff would then play right tackle. Would it be awful to have a veteran like Mangold to play guard and provide good insurance for Richburg. I'm not that confident in Brett Jones. Hart along with all the other lineman could be mentored by a great veteran. We could also draft a mid-round lineman and give him time to develop.
Should he be the 1st priority? No but this isn't some outlandish thought (if he can play guard). Something to keep in mind is that Reese usually loves taking other team's cuts as it doesn't factor into the free agency compensation equation.
... he hurt his ankle last year. If he is fully healed and you can get him at a good price, I'd consider putting Richburg at RG and signing him to play center. He wa better than Richburg before he hurt his ankle. Aint going to happen... but I wouldn't be sad... lol
Sooooo we draft a kid high to be our long term answer at Center who has one very good year and one below avg year PLAYING CENTER.....and we want to bring in a much older player with a decent injury history to compete for that spot possibly pushing Richburg to Guard where he was less than spectacular? Or did you want Mangold to play Guard, a positiin he never played with any consistency (if at all)?
And you're willing to move him to guard despite his skill set as a center, salary, injuries, mileage and age - while displacing your current center.
Maybe they can play with two centers at once.
This place is awesome sometimes.
I guess people see familar name and go gaga and want them on the team even though they are in decline (backside of career-reasons or part why these players are let go) injury history etc. and then have to fit a square peg into a round hole.
non fit
Many thought the Jets o-line was better with Wesley Johnson
But no, Wesley Johnson was not better than Mangold at least a healthy Mangold. Not at all. And in case anybody hasn't noticed we have a 36 year old QB with a God Awful OL in front of him right now. Honestly I'd keep the defense together and add whatever the hell I could to make this line better enough to at least give Eli a shot. Again, aint happening... jst a talking point. Our OL sucks balls.
He was held together by spit, duct tape and luck in 2015. He barely practiced that season but with the Jets playing well Mangold gutted it out and played but not a very high level we grew accustomed to. 2016 the wheels fell off. HE's done. Someone might pay him and they will regret it. He might have one year left.
Not sure where that's coming from. He is 33 and was a machine until he hurt his ankle. Releasing him was a pre cap move as the Jets are in full rebuild mode. If... BIG IF.. his ankle damage is not extensive and he is on his way to healthy, someone is going to pick him up and get a couple of good years. Again big if on the ankle.
Now again, I am not saying we should do this. And the likelihood of the Giants signing him is remote (like finding Atlantis remote). But if we got him for a good price I would not be sad... lol. I really liked Richburg in 2015 but he really had a tough year. It's funny to me that people would scream to sign a 34 year old tackle but a 33 year old pro-bowl center that missed 4 games in 11 years before last season is "done". The fact is nobody here knows for sure, and if he came at a good price there would be no negatives to bringing him into camp. Especially with the way our OL played last year. Terrible. Anyone remember Lomas Brown (37 years old when the Giants signed him) and Glenn Parker (34 years old when the Giants signed him)?
Eli is 36 and was beat to shit last year. I say bring in every mother-effin OL that you can at this point. let them all compete in camp.
good lord
nevermind

Come onnnnnn

Mangold might function as an emergency finger in the dike, but he is not a building block.
FYI he has never played more than a de minimis amount as a pro OG.
In his prime, absolutely. Not in 2017.
