COMBINE DAY 1 THREAD OL, RB

sjnyfan : 3/3/2017 8:00 am
This is one of the weakest OT classes in recent years but it doesn't mean we can't find a quality tackle. Ryan Ramczyk won't participate due to recent surgery. Garrett Boles may break agility records for the position but will have to answer a lot of questions about his past. With that said I still think Alabama's Cam Robinson is the best tackle in this class. The hate has gone too far and the talk of him needing to move inside is overblown imo.
The next tier has a lot of intriguing talent. Antonio Garcia has the athleticism and length you want from a LT. He added nine pounds between the Senior Bowl and Combine but still needs more. He's expected to time well in the 40. Dion Dawkins and Taylor Moton are two of my favorite lineman in the class for their hard nose, blue collar play. I could see them at RT or RG. Justin Senior is a bit underrated and worth watching. No lineman probably has more intrigue though than Bucknell's Julie'n Davenport. Small school All American and two time captain but at 6'7" with 36 1/2" arms and nearly 11" hands, I'm sure teams can't wait to see how he tests. He had an uneven Senior Bowl but has a high ceiling. Among the top interior lineman are Forrest Lamp, Dan Feeney and Ethan Pocic. All three could go in the top two rounds with Lamp and Feeney possibly going in the first.

While OL may not be seen as deep, RB is as deep as it's been in a while. Dalvin Cook, Leonard Fournette and Christian McCaffrey are first round talents that will attract alot of airplay. Along with Cook, the diminutive Tarik Cohen, a former track star could challenge Chris Johnson's 40 record, but he's not the only legit challenger. Kareem Hunt has been rising. Matthew Dayes is a sleeper I like. But honestly I could go on and on. RB is very deep this year. You can easily get a starter on Day 3 from this class.

Coverage starts at 8 but first 40 is at 9.
Good overall

I don't have a Top 20 grade in comparison to the last decade. At #23 Robinson should be in play for us. He could lock down the right side for a long time. He's my #1 OT by a fair margin and my only 1st rounder. That said there are players I'd draft before him but will they be there? Who knows.

We should draft a RB from this class. When is the question. For me the value is in Rounds 3/4. Marlon Mack and Dont'e Foreman are two guys I think the Giants will be interested in.
Bring in the Rb 40's

He's a true dancing bear: 6'4", 295, 34 reps and a sub-4.8 40 (unofficially 4.75 on nfl.com). Seems to be a draftable day-three prospect, based on athleticism and attitude.

Collins is the fastest in the clubhouse in Group 1. No surprise, both of his parents were college sprinters. Very versatile. Played every position except center but has long snapping experience. The kind of athletic, versatile player every team needs.

I'll pick up 40's again once the next group starts

Only 40s faster since '03 are Terron Armstead and Lane Johnson. That's great company.

I'm very intrigued by DII prospect Ethan Cooper. His lower half is all muscle and he uses it well. Very good in drills including the kick slide. 6'3" nearly 330 lbs and they just put up on NFLN a pic of him dunking. That's a crazy amount of power.

Agreed. With a hopefully improved Flowers, we'd have some big dudes out there.
Not sure why

we wouldn't go Robinson at 23 if he's there, especially if his technique is considered better than Flowers coming out.

Bolles would be a major departure for the Giants in at least one regard. Bolles will turn 25 in May. The Giants have mostly avoided over-age prospects for quite a while - since Aaron Ross, I think. Consider the #1 picks since then, and their ages on Draft Day:
Kenny Phillips 21Y 4M
Hakeem Nicks 21Y 3M
Jason Pierre-Paul 21Y 3M
Prince Amukamara 21Y 10M
David Wilson 20Y 10M
Justin Pugh 22Y 8M
Odell Beckham 21Y 6M
Ereck Flowers 21Y 0M
Eli Apple 20Y 9M

Simms11 : 3/3/2017 12:21 pm : link
an Olineman at #23 that would probably not be BPA?! Will we draft moreso for need this year in the first? I don't see the Giants changing their stripes for this draft and so I wouldn't expect one of the tackles to be drafted at #23 IMO. Day 2 might be a different story.

Not sure why you'd ask that, but I'm sure it's not likely. Considering he came to Miami as a WR and now he is a TE.

Rjanyg
Big Rick in FL : 3/3/2017 6:16 pm : link
I agree. He fits the size profile and he's an awesome athlete. He's also very young. He'll turn 21 in July. He also was very productive for Miami. He averaged 16.2 yards per catch. I read today that he averaged 11 yards AFTER the catch. He also had 8 TDs in 12 games last year. Which is 1 more than OJ Howard had in his entire Alabama career (46 games).

He does decent as a blocker. He's not great yet, but he was a WR just two years ago. So he still has work to do there. He has the frame to put on another 10-15 pounds. Plus insanely long arms which will help keep defenders off of him. Our very own Sy'56 said he's shown traits of being a dominant blocker. His upside is threw the roof. I think he can be a Jimmy Graham type receiver, but also an above average to good blocker.
Njoku
beatrixkiddo : 3/3/2017 6:56 pm : link
Is my favorite TE in this class as well. Tremendous upside, kid is a weapon that would be perfect in this offense. Can move him around anywhere, I like him as a #1 TE with Adams as the 2. And yes he has shown he can be an effective blocker, people get a little carried away with that sometimes.

Jerry Reese is very much a measurables guy in the first round. And the hands and arm length on this guy are tremendous. Throw in good strength and speed. I don't think the Giants would pass on him. The bigger question is whether he will make it to 23.

I think he is worth our 1st rounder. We all know Reese doesn't value the position but would make an exception with a twitchy athlete like Njoku.
Dion Dawkins
jacob12 : 3/3/2017 11:55 pm : link
I thought Dawkins had an outstanding day.He has excellent speed for his size (5.11),and extraordinary agility(7.30)secs in the 3 cone drill.Dion finished a close second in the 3 cone drill.

Dawkins has excellent upper body strength, and exceptional lower body strength.Dion is 6-4 and has very long arms.He could be a guard or tackle.

Dawkins is not getting a lot of publicity, but he had a superb combine.I would not be surprised if he is a low first round pick.

Reese not valuing TEs is just not true. If TE is the best player on the board Reese will take them. Hitdog42 was spot on everything last offseason as was Jordan Raanan. They both said Hunter Henry was going to be our pick at 40 over Sterling Shepard. Unfortunately Henry was taken a few picks before our spot.

Dawkins definitely had a great combine. Mayock loves him as being a great value. He still thinks he will be a mid-round pick, but whoever picks him will get a great player. Will he last till the third? Probably not - especially after the combine. But if he is there in the third, you run to the podium. He won't be there at the end of the fourth.
Lack of dynamic Speed by the running backs overall was disappointing

All wonky. We're talking RBs, not DBs or WRs. Elliott ran a 4.47 last year at 225lbs and outruns most people in the league on the field. Sub 4.5 is exceptional for a RB, most will do 4.5-4.65 this isn't a huge surprise.
