Brandon Marshall and NY Giants reach agreement on a two-year deal, per source. Marshall doesnt have to move, now plays with Eli and OBJ.

For one, Marshall SUCKS!! There is a reason he bounces from team to team. 2 he is injury prone. And finally he is a jackass. I can't wait for the Giants to lose a close game and either he or OBJ complains they aren't getting the ball enough.
The Giants didn't have a problem passing the ball. They had a problem pass blocking. How about spending money on the OL? I guess we will get our guy in the draft until we pass him up for another DL.
Now get a TE that can go up the seam and we are a completely different animal to defend, regardless of what we do with the OL.
Could Adams be that guy to run those seam routes? I think Fasano would make more sense now since we were lacking that blocking TE, however, I don't think that eliminates the need to draft a TE either though.
is nearing the end. He wants the chance to reach a SB, or at least get in the playoffs. The Giants will probably retain JPP, have Eli, OBJ, and SS. He also doesn't have to move. So he took less. Players sometimes do for a chance at a championship.

They needed a tall WR option. This will also help them a lot in the red zone. And he doesn't suck.

His bouncing from team to team has absolutely nothing to do with "sucking". What a ridiculous statement. 941 career catches over 12,000+ yards 82 TD's
if his head is on straight and he's still got something left, I'd
2015 he was a monster with good QB play. His style of play has never been speed... It's been physical and strong. Perfect fit and compliment. Nailed this pick.
is the perfect player to take a chance on. He's produced, we need a big WR, and he took a below market salary to stay in NY and have a chance at some playoff football. Even if Eli is declining, look at who was throwing Marshall the ball the last few years. Yikes.

Yep, injury prone. After all, he's missed 9 games in 11 seasons.
Though an end of career guy wasn't the kind of guy they would want and it certainly hasn't been. But great. Someone to keep defenses honest should be a great addition.
that was different than the ones we had and a VET to provide leadership and stability. Marshall is the perfect fit for RIGHT now... Gmen can win the whole thing and with that window of opportunity open for onlly so long you have to take your shot.

he's had 6 seasons with over 100 catches. if that sucks, I'll take the suck.
Really Gets Tiring When People Post and all the Negative
Crap comes out of the same group and then other idiots
pile on . Not everyone is an expert but loves there
Giants football and should be respected when asked a
question that may be obvious to most rather than mock
them just give then an answer instead of this snide
remarks and piling on .
We Needed a Guy with Size Maybe BM becomes Plax Part Two
I am surprised but I am glad they got a proven Vet to
Help OBJ
Huge upgrade from Cruz to Marshall. Some mild risk/ concerns but for that contract its a no brainer. Great signing and first big WR they've had since Plax ( and Ramses Barden.....)
wonder if the best move now is working a trade for Joe Thomas (2nd round?) and drafting a TE in the 1st. Okung is an upgrade but Thomas is the jackpot.
OBJ - Shepard - Njoku - Brandon Marshall
with
Joe Thomas blocking the blind side
and
Perhaps a nice power back (Blount, Lacy, Perine?) to "finish" things off? Would give us the look of a Championship squad.
It would be a move for Eli (and not the longterm health of the franchise) but he deserves it after what we've put him through, up front.
RE: If Mike Williams or Corey Davis is there at 23, we better take him
I agree. You don't pass on a future stud based on this signing. The Marshall signing is for today and should make us more dangerous by opening the field for both receivers and running backs. I like it.
Marshall takes pride in his blocking and has always been good at that.
Marshall was graded at #11 last year in run blocking according to PFF. His physical play out the outside should be able to open up some plays to that side the Giants would not normally run.
absolutely nothing negative about this move or the terms to lock him up.
I'm sure someone will find something to complain about ... but this move is a no brainer for Marshall and the Giants.
Now, use the money you saved by signing Marshall > Pryor/Alshon and go get 1 of these vet OL, extend JPP, and grab 1 of these rookie TEs.

.
What were they thinking, he is affordable for them.
They don't have a lot to spend, doesn't excite me either,
but that is your answer. He will be either good for
Beckham and Co., or toxic, we'll see?
I justed drooled thinking about that, gonna keep my fingers cross all of that happens. With hopefully the addition of a solid G pickup in the draft as well.
WR wasn't as much of a need as OL, DE, and LB but Marshall is a perfect complement for OBJ and great blockers as well as great in the redzone.. I also assume that snacks had some good things to say about him.. Now just fix the OL and we should kick ass next year.
And supposedly not a great guy in the locker room.
But as others have mentioned, he's a big, strong, legit #2 WR, which they desperately needed (a big upgrade over Ruben Randle). If teams ignore him to double OBJ, Marshall will make them pay.
If he doesn't become too much of a distraction, he's a good 2-year rental that solves a problem.
is very weird sometimes. When has Jerry Reese ever given the impression he will pass on a young talent because he signed a 33 year old? This is what you call a bridge signing, a stop gap (with some real 2017-2018 upside). If Reese loves a WR in the first or second he's not passing because he signed Brandon Marshall to a moderate short term deal c'mon.
assume Marshall sees post football opportunities in NY, that might evaporate if he left the city to finish his career. Taking less allows him to preserve those opportunities by staying in NY. And it gives him a chance to reach the playoffs.
- Give us the big receiver Eli loves.
- Gives us the red zone threat we need.
- Gives us the flexibility to not have to chase a TE early in draft. While BPA is "always" the rule of the day, it allows them to focus on OL if they want.

I'd have a boxer from now till the playoffs if this played out like that. Lol. I really want Lacy and Njoku.

They are not getting Thomas, but I like James Conner
in the draft at RB (been on his bandwagon).
I just think he would be a good fit, toughness for
a young kid I like too!

Because a healthy portion of fans rarely look beyond the season at hand. It's annoying.
in his career Marshall had some hiccups but for a guy with diagnosed mental illness what exactly has he done wrong in recent history? Where is the "bad in the lockerroom" stuff from? I can't recall the last time we heard anything "bad" about him. The Jets were a dumpster fire with horrendous QB play which would be the perfect situation for a "bad" egg to lash out and he didn't.

Yeah some people just can't differentiate between his Denver days and now.. Besides I am sure Snacks vouched for him thats why the deal got done so fast..

The funny thing is, if the Giants were to draft a WR early, you will also have the "Why would we draft a WR when we just signed Marshall" crowd.
All I know is this is a great signing. As many have pointed out, Marshall still has the physical presence that we've lacked in our WR corps since Nicks (in his prime). His style of play is complimentary to Shep & OBJ. I'm still hoping we can grab OJ or Njoku though.
Do not realize how good of a downfield blocker he is as well .... this is a great signing ..... I think the Giants are going to concentrate on RB OL TE in the draft but I wouldn't rule out them taking top linebacker defensive tackle and DB in this draft
Eli, is at his best throwing to taller, physical wr.this guy is going to open things up.now let's get a TE that's big and Mobile, is a good reciever and blocker.

so we can keep Roger Lewis, why else? :-)
I'd still love to see them grab Hodges in the 2nd or 3rd round if he's available

It certainly does give them additional flexibility in the draft to address a pressing need.
Should change the way our offense needs to be defended by removing some pressure from OBJ.
To some posters above, this should have zero impact on who is drafted in Round 1. Zero. If a WR who the Giants are convinced will be a stuf is there at 23, they will take him, even above a TE. You don't pass on talented 21 year olds on cost controlled contracts because you have a 33 year old making only $6M/per. That isn't how it works.
and now with Beckham on the opposite side, he's going to see the easiest matchups of his career. I think he can certainly bounce-back from his 2016 season. I don't think 65-1000-8 is unreasonable expectations for him.
I had picked out Marshall as a guy I would like on the Giants. He is great fit in a WR corps that are all under 6'0" and will become a red zone target that the Giants have not had since Plax as a physical mismatch.
And if you note, throughout the season, Marshall was giving advice to Odell via the media. Back in October:
Quote:
Marshall said he saw some things from Beckham in Mondays game in Minnesota that Beckham could do better, but Marshall seemed more troubled by the reaction after the game by the other Giants.
I think that he can channel it a bit better, but theres a thin line. He has to be himself, Marshall said. Monday night he was not himself. Thats not good for them. Coach coming out and saying he needs to do this. No, thats the wrong way. Youre playing with fire right there.
and after the boat thing:
Quote:
"I don't mean to pile on, but the problem in the first half was the Giants' receivers," Marshall said. "When you're in these big moments, you cannot drop those balls. You have to come down with it. They didn't do it. They let their team down."
Joking aside, Marshall did say the party boat and trip had nothing to do with the loss to the Packers. But it doesn't matter. Fact isn't always the deciding factor when public opinion and perception are involved. It also doesn't help, Marshall said, that Beckham and Co. play in New York.
Distractions are going to be there, warranted or not. Marshall said Beckham needs to be ready for them, especially if he's going to bring more on himself. After all, no one knows about the Miami trip if not for Snapchat videos and a photo posted on Twitter.
I think people remember the younger, immature Marshall from his Broncos and Dolphins days. He has spoken about issues with mental illness. And to be honest, the past few years, Marshall seems to now to understand his role, and has become more of a leader. All season long, Marshall seemed to be offering advice as a mentor to Odell from afar. So long as Marshall can stay healthy and be the physical mismatch that he has shown, this move makes the Giants a better team. With the chance that they might have found an unlikely leader for Odell, Shepard, and King.
should be the easiest job in the NFL. Randle didn't care enough to really flourish in that role, and Cruz wasn't built to be an outside receiver even when healthy. Marshall is gonna be a monster in this role - it's an absolute perfect fit for him at this stage of his career. I wish there was a game this Sunday.
A big, physical, possession receiver was the missing piece
I think Adams should be given the TE spot, after all we did draft him and groom him for two years. With Perkins out of the backfield, this is a very potent attack.
I want a OL/OG in the first round. Preferably Robinson, but I'd be good with Lamp or Bolles.
great player in his heyday but he'll be 33 this month and past production is long gone.
Serviceable signing. Name of the game is get Beckham into single coverage. This will help, but WR still a big need which they'll no doubt take into draft day.
Truly great player in his prime though. Among the strongest WRs in modern NFL history.

I seem to like Adams a lot more than most people on BBI do. I think pairing a complimentary TE (Engram, Everett, etc.) with him would be just fine.

It's quite possible he becomes the third-most productive receiver for this team.
BM had 60-800 last season despite all the QB issues the Jets had. It's possible he's running out of tread, but he's only a year removed from a 109-1502-14 season (14 TDs led the league). And his yards/catch were almost identical the last 2 seasons (and both above his career avg) so I (optimistically) tend to lean towards last year being due to the Jets circus more than a steep decline in BM's ability.
Now, I don't expect him to get anywhere close to his 2015 numbers simply due to Beckham taking a lot of targets, but I think he'll exceed last season's totals across the board. Keep in mind Eli threw for 400 yards less than his 2014/15 totals, so there's plenty of "room" for Shepard to improve his #s and for BM to exceed Cruz's 2016 production.
...jittery looking over to his left at Ereck Flowers, Eli can just duck and chuck with a fair chance of Brandon Marshall coming down with some of those jump balls.

When he was released last week & everybody was on the sign him now mode, I had doubts about his ability to fit locker room wise w/the Giants. After giving it some thought, his talent, his size are a perfect fit & I'm sure the Giants did their due diligence. He's far from over the hill, last year w/the Jets was a cluster fuck w/their QBs. The year before he was a stud when Fitzpatrick had his career year. I think he's still got a lot left in the tank.

It's a massive stretch when you have Petty and Geno starting 5 games (and Fitz the other 11).
Before Petty started playing, BM was averaging 68 yds/game. With Petty, that dropped to 35 yards/game.
who does little more on this website than post GIFs and super hero threads, it's perfectly reasonable to recognize/point out that it's uncommon for WRs to excel past 33/34. And tons fall off a cliff at precisely that age.
Again, insofar as it's worth responding to Batman's fluffer.
The signing is fine. It'll take some heat off Beckham and add a desperately needed red zone target. But let's not act like this is a gamechanger like 28 y/o Plax. They still need to target a WR on draft day.
He's had some major drops the last few years. You might want to prepare yourself for that in advance.
Not all that concerned. Two more(?) drops than OBJ, albeit not sure at the moment how much more OBJ was targeted..
At best, it makes us rather lethal, potentially..At worst, he'll be the big red zone target we've been lacking of late AND he will take some pressure off of OBJ, freeing him up some more..Hopefully

Which was a post of mine above, re WR in the draft, albeit it might be later on, unless a steal drops to us
How can you not understand that this is a huge success story. Last year we went wild in FA and fixed the defense. But we did spend a lot of money to do it. Getting a 6 time former pro bowler at a bargain price solves a major need for the third WR. He's the big guy we were looking for and the red zone target we sorely needed. The other WR FAs were going to more costly. He wanted to stay in NY and settled for less to do it. Sometimes, it isn't always about the money. He wants a chance to get to the playoffs and have a shot to go the Super Bowl.
Now that we have that need fixed, we have 3 more areas on the offense that need addressed. We need a dangerous runner and a dangerous TE. We also need a decent OL. We should be in position to land 2 of those in the draft. In the 1st round we can get Howard, McCaffrey, Cook or Njoku. I don't see us taking an OL unless we get desperate. In the second round we can still get a darn good TE or RB. Hodges or Everett at TE or a RB like Kamara, or a decent OL or a QB who slips.
Personally, I kind of like the idea of taking McCaffrey if he falls to us. He would eliminate the need to keep Vereen around as he is an excellent receiver as well as a runner. Since Marshall isn't going to stay here for too long, he can also be used as a WR. His versatility gives him the edge over Howard. I would be happy with either guy in the first round.
It would be great if we can solve our OL problem in FA. Unfortunately, getting a good one is costly. Cutting Vereen gives us a little more to help in that regard. Drafting McCaffrey allows that to occur. Getting a guy like Blount who's the best goal line RB would also benefit us for the right price. Getting 2 red zone guys like Marshall and Blount would significantly improve our TD rate int he red zone.
Imagine our goal line offense consisting of Blount and McCaffrey at RB, Beckham, Sharpe, and Marshall at WR, and Hodges at TE. It would be awfully hard for a defense to cover all of those guys. Blount would make them have to watch the run and the defense would have to account for McCaffrey, Beckham, Sharpe, Marshall, and Hodges if we pass.
Is that this team was structured before in a way where if Odell were to get hurt, the entire offense would nosedive.
Losing Odell would still put a huge dent in this offense but Marshall is good enough to still be a WR1 and would still give this offense a legit outside threat.

Was that an airplane that just flew over your head?
...or someone else, I sure ain't gonna smile about our free agent dollars going to Brandon Marshall.
I'll say it again... wide receiver is not a high priority on this team.
It takes a back seat to:
TE
OT
OG
RB
LB
If Jon Hankins would take 6 million dollars a year, he would be signed already. If Kevin Zeitler would accept 6 million a year, the Giants would do backflips. WR was a need, perhaps not as big as other, but it was a need. And they just got a really good player for LESS THAN HIS MARKET VALUE. I don't see how anyone could complain about that.
#2 WR has been high on my list of needs for awhile now.
Eli and Beckham have been the entire offense for three seasons. Now Marshall immediately becomes one of the best #2 WRs in the NFL, with Shepard and Vereen (hopefully healthy) going to work in the middle of the field.

I will disagree with you all day long. Adding a WR to take pressure off OBJ and SS, as well as one who is a certified threat in the redzone and as a blocking WR, changes the entire dynamic of the way teams played the Giants last year.

Give the TE position to Adams? Based on what? 1 TD? Give me Njoku in round one to team with Marshall, OBJ and Shep. Crazy group of targets!
with Cruz released, Roger Lewis was the biggest WR on the roster at 6'0, 196 lbs. And our startin TE is only 6'2 and not a leaper.
Think about that. We had a bunch of tiny receivers and not one big target. Brandon Marshall is one of the best big WRs in the game and a great possession receiver.
Compounding matters, Eli favors (and errs on the side of) throwing high balls and letting his receivers go up and get it.
This will be huge for Eli and the Giants.
Nice touch putting his name in blue on the signature line
Good signing; at that money/years it's a no brainer.
I wouldn't be surprised if Reese is targeting one of the tight ends in round 1 now. If I had to put a bet on who our pick is right now I'm going with the Miami kid.
when the Giants/Tri-state area is attractive to free agents, and this is absolutely the case with Marshall. Texas and Florida always have the added attraction of no state income tax, but Marshall loves the Giants so he can stay in the media spotlight for his cause and also still do his Showtime gig. Huge.
He will blow it up this year. He liked winning 10 games 2 years ago, and you could see how last season killed him. He loves the game, and if the Giants can somehow improve the O line, the Giants will win a playoff game in 17/18. Very pumped.

I think Brandon Marshall is a very dangerous receiver who can cause big problems for NFL defenses. But out of all due respect, recognizing this great receiver in the context of Amukamara is confusing to me.

Marshall will be dangerous in the red zone and the intermediate range receiver this offense has been desperate for. Now if they add a receiving TE in the draft and upgrade the offensive line then this offense could be special.
This move made the most sense in the entire off-season
Good signing; at that money/years it's a no brainer.

What's confusing? I remember watching Marshall eat Prince alive. It's an anecdote. Going forward, my wish is to see him do that FOR us AGAINST other teams.

Really? Why?
Because of his personality and some claims that he's not a good locker room guy, etc.
I figured his history would be the type of thing you didn't want in the NYG locker room.
Wish he was a couple years younger but I'm thrilled
As for the bad locker room guy stuff, from all we can tell that has not been much of an issue at all since Denver. I'm not surprised Marshall wanted to stay in NY to avoid any potential conflicts with another team regarding his travel to tape "inside the NFL" in NY during the week...if I recall correctly Chicago was upset with him for that. I can't hate a guy for having an eye on his next career as that time of his life is coming soon. That's the smart move.
No way to know for sure, but BM seems like a really terrific young man. He's clearly very smart and he's always been a hard worker and his accomplishments on the field are HOF worthy.
Unless I'm mistaken, Eli Manning is the best quarterback BM will have ever played with during his career. Look at the ridiculous career stats of BM and then look at the tomato cans who were throwing him the ball.
Marshall has been very vocal over the past year or two about being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, and how he works to cope with it. If anything he's shown significant personal growth. I wouldn't worry about him being a problem on the field or in the locker room.
I also like acquiring a quality veteran that hasn't played on many good teams. Guys like that can get very hungry when that title shot comes around, and that makes them dangerous.
I would recommend to everyone that they listen to the podcast Peter King did a while back with Marshall. It's a good interview and will give a lot of insight into Marshall's past. I listened to it when it came out, and I didn't come away with the impression that Marshall would be a problem player. Link - ( New Window )

Possible. If Hankins isn't re-signed, and it seems like that may be the case, I think the odds go up for a DE that can slide in at DT.

Well, hey.. we finally agree on something! We're on the same page with this.
I haven't looked into this so any help is appreciated
I think Brandon Marshall is a very dangerous receiver who can cause big problems for NFL defenses.
So they signed a guy - at below market value - who you admit causes problems for NFL teams, and yet you are "ambivalent" about it?
Strange...
Because we still have a non-existent running game behind an inferior run blocking offensive line.
And the people who can really improve those areas in free agency are not accepting 6 million dollars a year. So the goal should be to constantly improve the team and not just to hold onto money waiting for a non-existent player at a position of the most need (or to overpay at a position of the most need). The Giants just added a really good player for LESS than he was worth. If you can't get on board with that, then I don't know what to say.
At that price it's a good addition if he can be a decent teammate.
...and how much of the year-two money is guaranteed. From what we can tell in March, Marshall looks like a wonderful complement to Beckham and Shepard.
Posters fretting about his age have a valid point. Most receivers are well past their peak by 33, with the vast majority enjoying their most productive seasons between 25 and 31:
But that's the wrong standard to apply to this signing. The Giants don't need the 2007-2013 Brandon Marshall - or even the 2015 Brandon Marshall - and they aren't paying for that guy.
RE: RE: RE: RE: I remember Prince trying to cover him
But for this season, upgrading from Cruz to Marshall is huge. Marshall had a 1500 yard season 2 years ago, last year his production suffered bc Decker got hurt and Ryan Fitzpatrick sucked balls. I think he's still got a couple strong seasons in the tank, and being option 2 with defenses chasing OBJ will open up a lot for him
Great move, and reasonable price
RE: RE: RE: RE: I remember Prince trying to cover him
lots of incentives on his part. I can also see the Giants using that 11 personnel grouping 95% of the time again and this helps free up receivers against that cover 2 also. Cruz wasn't what he was last year and teams knew that and a better outside receiver would have had a bigger year IMO. I think Marshall could bring that. His height and wing span will also help Eli out as he tends to miss high too. Lastly, the back-shoulder fade route has been missing for a few years, since Nicks left and I think Eli needs that back in his arsenal.
but people need to consider that Beckham will be receiving the double teams leaving Marshall one on one for the majority of the time. Marshall will be dangerous in the red zone and the intermediate range receiver this offense has been desperate for. Now if they add a receiving TE in the draft and upgrade the offensive line then this offense could be special.
Marshall's value can come without him catching 100 passes.
If his "presence" forces defenses to change how the Giants offense is covered, that is value in itself.
You want to double Odell? Ok, they have Shepard underneath against lesser defenders in one-on-one situations or Marshall on in-cuts.
Everyone wins. With a few more moves, you can have a situation where the Giants are more explosive even if Odell catches fewer passes, similar to Julio Jones and the Falcons last year.
If we can develop a 450 point offense to offset what I believe will be a drop in the quality of defense we had played last year, that will be fine.
Marshall is a better downfield threat than Cruz or Shepard thanks to his height. And with Beckham still likely to draw doubles, that means BM will see plenty of single coverage.
If the OL can give him time, Eli will try to get the ball to the downfield WR every time he's single covered (and sometimes when he's not). BM's going to convert more of those opportunities then Randle did 2 years ago and Cruz/Lewis/King did last season. D's are going to pay if they shade their coverage to Beckham as much as they did this past season.
Marshall is going to pile up a shit load of catches
Teams are not going to adjust away from Beckham for Marshall - that's insane. Beckham is a touchdown waiting to happen any play. Teamsare going to have to double Beckham still, and try to give help on Marshall. Shepard is likely seeing the same looks as before.
This is a huge add. Marshall is physical and big enough that he is almost always "open". Those wasted 2-3 yard pasess that Donnel and Tye used to get Marshall can turn into 5-10 yarders pretty easily.
This guy should be Eli's new security blanket
RE: I haven't looked into this so any help is appreciated
Guys like Garcon, Pryor, D. Jackson, Stills, etc. are all looking for at least $10 mil a year. Great move by the Giants. Now they can spend that money elsewhere. You go, Jerry Reese!!
RE: RE: I haven't looked into this so any help is appreciated
..missed a game and came back much earlier than anyone expected? Could that be the reason for a subpar year?
He had Bryce Petty at QB for 1/3 of the season. That's the #1 reason for the subpar #s. They also lost Decker early and Fitz reverted to his career norms so even with Fitz at QB, they were getting below average play from the position.
Character I question a bit, but giants must feel different otherwise.
Slade...run run run away!!
What about his character (other than that of his earlier days) is in question? Not being facetious, legit question. I haven't anything I can remember painting him in a negative light. Seems like a very loyal teammate too.

This is a great signing, the money is great and the fit is great. This will help the Oline a lot also, the safeties now move back, opening up the running game. I wanted this guy here and he will not be a problem in the locker room, in fact the opposite.
They can get Whitworth on a 2 year deal, the DT, Guard, running back, and tight end can be had in the draft. Get Whitworth, no need to be conservative now, go for it, that would give us a 2 year window for another ring.
if the Giants can get Fasano signed. The money saved on Marshall should easily cover a Fasano contract. I know he isn't a sexy name, but adding a top blocking TE would really help the OL and the run game. The Giants can then grab one of these young TEs in the draft and really upgrade the position.
I like the signing because of the price.....we have limited cap, whether we want to admit it or not, and the goal is not just to sign guys, to replace players, but to upgrade the position....if Marshall can stay healthy, he is a definite upgrade over Cruz.....
A smart GM realizes, that he can't have all stars at every position, but if he can replace guys with guys that upgrade the position, he has done his job.....
...or someone else, I sure ain't gonna smile about our free agent dollars going to Brandon Marshall.
I'll say it again... wide receiver is not a high priority on this team.
It takes a back seat to:
TE
OT
OG
RB
LB
I couldn't disagree more. I think it's a huge need. Not as big as OL but there was no one else on the roster to divert attention from OBJ. Now there is. It will open up things for him as well as Sheppard. Now Jerry, go and improve the O-line and I'll consider it a successful off season.
How about spending money on the OL? I guess we will get our guy in the draft until we pass him up for another DL.
I get that there are limited resources and a salary cap and everything, but you know that free agency hasn't even officially started yet, right?
I mean, we're all impatient, none of us like waiting for things to happen, but can we wait until after free agency starts to get snarky over the Giants not signing guys?
As long as he keeps the locker room stuff inside the locker room, I don't have a problem with him. Last year was a down year for him, but I think that has as much to do with the Jets OL injuries and QB play as anything else. He has been a productive WR for most of his career. I'd like to believe last year was an aberration and he will provide the solid WR2 threat opposite OBJ to help open up the entire offense.
If they can somehow add OL help and a decent RB to split time with Perkins, I'll be really excited about the offense again. And maybe find a way to get Fasano or draft Howard/Njoku. I'll be dancing.
RE: Nice touch putting his name in blue on the signature line
Good signing; at that money/years it's a no brainer.
I wouldn't be surprised if Reese is targeting one of the tight ends in round 1 now. If I had to put a bet on who our pick is right now I'm going with the Miami kid.
If we get the Miami kid or OJ... man that's some group of skill players. I try not to get too invested in nyg draft hopefuls but I really want a big athletic TE here.
I think Brandon Marshall is a very dangerous receiver who can cause big problems for NFL defenses. But out of all due respect, recognizing this great receiver in the context of Amukamara is confusing to me.

This should be forcefully read to posters here that say the same tried crap every day here during FA. We get it. But some don't. Read this and try and think outside the box for a second. It's not even thinking outside the box. It's merely just thinkng.
The OTs aren't any good and if they are they will cost double or triple shah Marshall got, and we don't even know how much guaranteed money he got. And FA isn't over yet. And wr was a HUGE need. Marshall is a perfect stop gap move. Perfect. Pryor intrigued me but there was no way you'd get Pryor short term and cheap like this and Marshall is a player.
based on past performance on the field. Not so good with his past performance off the field.
This makes the team a Super Bowl contender? What if he blows out his ACL in the preseason? That's the kind of thinking that had the Eagles thinking they had a dream team.

Again with this off the field stuff, SMH. We won 11 games and on paper we just got better. I haven't hear or read anyone claiming this was a "dream team". Being viewed as contender isn't that far fetched IMO.
have seen him on inside the NFL--one of the reasons he signed with the giants--and he seems like a decent guy that can roll with the punches. we needed a big guy WR target--eli says hello--plus he can block--everyone seems to forget about WRs blocking, but they turn 5-10 yards into 20-30-long TD.
Well he should offer a big improvement at the position in the red zone. He should also improve our third and long conversion rate.
Unfortunately I doubt he will do much to impact the problem of consistently being in second/third-and-long situations so I doubt this will significantly improve our offense or allow us to be more consistent offensively.**
**Assumes similar approach to game planning offensively as 2016
This is a lightning in a bottle signing. I believe he has one great
Marshall is 33 yrs old. The Texans signed Ahman Green a few years ago. He was a total bust. I hope the Giants were careful with his contract. I'm always skeptical of older veterans. I don't want to see him riding the bike on the sidelines because of a groin injury.
Agreed. Not another signing (unless a JPP extension) until the OL is fixed. Every other position can wait. Our resources better be put into the OL or forget about next year we will be in the same place.
Shepard is going to have a big year, fantasy owners better grab him

Best objection Ive heard all day. Totally agree. Although I dont think the LT is as necessary as a G. We can always help Tackles with TEs, but I want a big angry, ugly mean, fuck toilet of a guard on our right side.
How does this (superb) signing signal what we can or can't do in free agency moving forward? My guess is they sign at least one o lineman, a TE and a DL. And that's after this signing.
Also, do the people critical of him as as a player actually know how much he's accomplished and what he has done with literally borderline bad quarterbacks? I would have been elated if we somehow rescued Larry fitz, but we just got a version of Calvin Johnson and Plax. He's likely a hall of fame receiver who's quarterbacks have been Jay Cutler, Henne, Matt Moore...
It's not impossible he finishes in the top 3 in yards all time.
Newsday
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter
Brandon Marshall and NY Giants reach agreement on a two-year deal, per source. Marshall doesnt have to move, now plays with Eli and OBJ.

Now get a TE that can go up the seam and we are a completely different animal to defend, regardless of what we do with the OL.
No details yet, but don't be surprised if the numbers make other more like a one year deal with an option
This just solved so many problems with our Offense. I'm thrilled with the move.
Great addition!
slade did nail it
The Giants didn't have a problem passing the ball.

They needed a tall WR option. This will also help them a lot in the red zone. And he doesn't suck.

His bouncing from team to team has absolutely nothing to do with "sucking". What a ridiculous statement. 941 career catches over 12,000+ yards 82 TD's

Opens the options at #23 to draft TE/RB/DE.....I like it a lot.
Boom.
Get OL and TE help now, bring back Hank and JPP, go to war.
but sadly true
Yep, injury prone. After all, he's missed 9 games in 11 seasons.
Idiot.

I think it's a good fit as he doesn't have to be THE GUY. Think of like an end of career Marvin Harrison when they had Wayne.
His family must love NY. He gets to do his Showtime show, Giants get a discount and Marshall gets a legit chance at the playoffs.
Crap comes out of the same group and then other idiots

TE OL or LB round one. Got to think someone will slip out of those three
Great signing. Give me an solid OL and BPA in the draft, were golden.
Finalize a JPP extension, get a Tackle and draft a stud TE.

Perhaps a nice power back (Blount, Lacy, Perine?) to "finish" things off? Would give us the look of a Championship squad.
It would be a move for Eli (and not the longterm health of the franchise) but he deserves it after what we've put him through, up front.
I'm sure someone will find something to complain about ... but this move is a no brainer for Marshall and the Giants.
Now, use the money you saved by signing Marshall > Pryor/Alshon and go get 1 of these vet OL, extend JPP, and grab 1 of these rookie TEs.
The Giants didn't have a problem passing the ball. They had a problem pass blocking. How about spending money on the OL? I guess we will get our guy in the draft until we pass him up for another DL.
What were they thinking, he is affordable for them.
They don't have a lot to spend, doesn't excite me either,
but that is your answer. He will be either good for
Beckham and Co., or toxic, we'll see?
But as others have mentioned, he's a big, strong, legit #2 WR, which they desperately needed (a big upgrade over Ruben Randle). If teams ignore him to double OBJ, Marshall will make them pay.
If he doesn't become too much of a distraction, he's a good 2-year rental that solves a problem.
- Gives us the red zone threat we need.
- Gives us the flexibility to not have to chase a TE early in draft. While BPA is "always" the rule of the day, it allows them to focus on OL if they want.

They are not getting Thomas, but I like James Conner
in the draft at RB (been on his bandwagon).
I just think he would be a good fit, toughness for
a young kid I like too!
Because a healthy portion of fans rarely look beyond the season at hand. It's annoying.
Don't forget Coleman Rudolph!
Wait a minute....
Does this mean that Hankins is gone?
Kareem McKenzie!
Yeah some people just can't differentiate between his Denver days and now.. Besides I am sure Snacks vouched for him thats why the deal got done so fast..
I've echoed the same. Good post..😎
JPP signing will give us more cap room than we have now.
Quote:
is very weird sometimes.

I'd still love to see them grab Hodges in the 2nd or 3rd round if he's available
It certainly does give them additional flexibility in the draft to address a pressing need.

And if you note, throughout the season, Marshall was giving advice to Odell via the media. Back in October:
I think that he can channel it a bit better, but theres a thin line. He has to be himself, Marshall said. Monday night he was not himself. Thats not good for them. Coach coming out and saying he needs to do this. No, thats the wrong way. Youre playing with fire right there.
and after the boat thing:
I want a OL/OG in the first round. Preferably Robinson, but I'd be good with Lamp or Bolles.
It's quite possible he becomes the third-most productive receiver for this team.
I'm assuming the Giants must have had some positive progress up to this point with JPP.
However, I'm wondering if perhaps Giants are going to let Hankins test free agency and are willing to let him go.
Serviceable signing. Name of the game is get Beckham into single coverage. This will help, but WR still a big need which they'll no doubt take into draft day.
Truly great player in his prime though. Among the strongest WRs in modern NFL history.

in his career Marshall had some hiccups but for a guy with diagnosed mental illness what exactly has he done wrong in recent history? Where is the "bad in the lockerroom" stuff from? I can't recall the last time we heard anything "bad" about him. The Jets were a dumpster fire with horrendous QB play which would be the perfect situation for a "bad" egg to lash out and he didn't.
I've echoed the same. Good post..😎
You find out the character of an individual when things are
going badly, NOT when things are going well.
It's easy for chemistry in the locker room, when things
are going smoothly or well. Apparently you haven't followed
his entire career very closely, if you can only point out
the Jets situation last season. We'll see how he acts
with the Giants, I wouldn't have done it.
That is what they can afford, so...

I seem to like Adams a lot more than most people on BBI do. I think pairing a complimentary TE (Engram, Everett, etc.) with him would be just fine.

Keep in mind Eli threw for 400 yards less than his 2014/15 totals, so there's plenty of "room" for Shepard to improve his #s and for BM to exceed Cruz's 2016 production.

don't forget Mackenzie, he was a very good RT for the gmen!
...jittery looking over to his left at Ereck Flowers, Eli can just duck and chuck with a fair chance of Brandon Marshall coming down with some of those jump balls.

in his career Marshall had some hiccups but for a guy with diagnosed mental illness what exactly has he done wrong in recent history?
?? What was the Jets season?
Serviceable signing. Name of the game is get Beckham into single coverage. This will help, but WR still a big need which they'll no doubt take into draft day.
Truly great player in his prime though. Among the strongest WRs in modern NFL history.

Long gone is a bit of a stretch, he did have 1500 yards and 14 TDs in 2015.
It's a massive stretch when you have Petty and Geno starting 5 games (and Fitz the other 11).
Before Petty started playing, BM was averaging 68 yds/game. With Petty, that dropped to 35 yards/game.
68 yds/game would be 1088 yds for the season.
It's quite possible he becomes the third-most productive receiver for this team.
you shouldn't want him to get more than that. If he does, it means that Beckham is having a shit year or is hurt, and Shepard regressed.
...and I say that with the opinion that Brandon Marshall can create havoc for defenses, even though he is no longer in his prime.
I would have preferred the money going to as many FA offensive linemen as possible! Wide receiver is not out #1 urgent problem.
Why the hell throw $12 Million dollars at it?
Again, insofar as it's worth responding to Batman's fluffer.
The signing is fine. It'll take some heat off Beckham and add a desperately needed red zone target. But let's not act like this is a gamechanger like 28 y/o Plax. They still need to target a WR on draft day.
Giants get a much needed tall impact receiver for a good price.

Which was a post of mine above, re WR in the draft, albeit it might be later on, unless a steal drops to us
Now that we have that need fixed, we have 3 more areas on the offense that need addressed.
Losing Odell would still put a huge dent in this offense but Marshall is good enough to still be a WR1 and would still give this offense a legit outside threat.

I will disagree with you all day long. Adding a WR to take pressure off OBJ and SS, as well as one who is a certified threat in the redzone and as a blocking WR, changes the entire dynamic of the way teams played the Giants last year.
I want a OL/OG in the first round. Preferably Robinson, but I'd be good with Lamp or Bolles.
Give the TE position to Adams? Based on what? 1 TD? Give me Njoku in round one to team with Marshall, OBJ and Shep. Crazy group of targets!

I wouldn't be surprised if Reese is targeting one of the tight ends in round 1 now. If I had to put a bet on who our pick is right now I'm going with the Miami kid.
He will blow it up this year. He liked winning 10 games 2 years ago, and you could see how last season killed him. He loves the game, and if the Giants can somehow improve the O line, the Giants will win a playoff game in 17/18. Very pumped.
I wouldn't be surprised if Reese is targeting one of the tight ends in round 1 now. If I had to put a bet on who our pick is right now I'm going with the Miami kid.
I thought you would be furious about this signing. Good to see you're on board.
I think Brandon Marshall is a very dangerous receiver who can cause big problems for NFL defenses. But out of all due respect, recognizing this great receiver in the context of Amukamara is confusing to me.

What's confusing? I remember watching Marshall eat Prince alive. It's an anecdote. Going forward, my wish is to see him do that FOR us AGAINST other teams.

Because of his personality and some claims that he's not a good locker room guy, etc.
I figured his history would be the type of thing you didn't want in the NYG locker room.
Unless I'm mistaken, Eli Manning is the best quarterback BM will have ever played with during his career. Look at the ridiculous career stats of BM and then look at the tomato cans who were throwing him the ball.
I think Brandon Marshall is a very dangerous receiver who can cause big problems for NFL defenses.
So they signed a guy - at below market value - who you admit causes problems for NFL teams, and yet you are "ambivalent" about it?
Strange...
I also like acquiring a quality veteran that hasn't played on many good teams. Guys like that can get very hungry when that title shot comes around, and that makes them dangerous.

Because we still have a non-existent running game behind an inferior run blocking offensive line.

Possible. If Hankins isn't re-signed, and it seems like that may be the case, I think the odds go up for a DE that can slide in at DT.

Well, hey.. we finally agree on something! We're on the same page with this.

Great move, and reasonable price
Because we still have a non-existent running game behind an inferior run blocking offensive line.
Well, Marshall is considered one of the top blocking WR.
Regardless - what FA running back and/or OL would you have signed?
And never mind the fact that signing Marshall doesn't preclude them from signing anyone else if they want.

I want that pen
If the OL can give him time, Eli will try to get the ball to the downfield WR every time he's single covered (and sometimes when he's not). BM's going to convert more of those opportunities then Randle did 2 years ago and Cruz/Lewis/King did last season. D's are going to pay if they shade their coverage to Beckham as much as they did this past season.
This is a huge add. Marshall is physical and big enough that he is almost always "open". Those wasted 2-3 yard pasess that Donnel and Tye used to get Marshall can turn into 5-10 yarders pretty easily.
This guy should be Eli's new security blanket

Not really. They can restructure/cut guys if they need more cap room...
He had Bryce Petty at QB for 1/3 of the season. That's the #1 reason for the subpar #s. They also lost Decker early and Fitz reverted to his career norms so even with Fitz at QB, they were getting below average play from the position.
Slade...run run run away!!
have more opportunity now
Now fix the oline
Really exciting start for the offseason.

What about his character (other than that of his earlier days) is in question? Not being facetious, legit question. I haven't anything I can remember painting him in a negative light. Seems like a very loyal teammate too.

*heard
Plus he plays hard. This is a great move for NYG.

I couldn't disagree more. I think it's a huge need. Not as big as OL but there was no one else on the roster to divert attention from OBJ. Now there is. It will open up things for him as well as Sheppard. Now Jerry, go and improve the O-line and I'll consider it a successful off season.
Conference call. It will be held soon. You can't listen in.

Thanks, Eric. Time for me to figure out how to use the hacking tools that presented themselves yesterday!
I get that there are limited resources and a salary cap and everything, but you know that free agency hasn't even officially started yet, right?
I mean, we're all impatient, none of us like waiting for things to happen, but can we wait until after free agency starts to get snarky over the Giants not signing guys?
or Pryor's agent trying to drive up the price

If we get the Miami kid or OJ... man that's some group of skill players. I try not to get too invested in nyg draft hopefuls but I really want a big athletic TE here.

We're a better offense today.

Again with this off the field stuff, SMH. We won 11 games and on paper we just got better. I haven't hear or read anyone claiming this was a "dream team". Being viewed as contender isn't that far fetched IMO.
I had to read this a few times to make sure I understood.
You think King may take snaps away from Marshall?
Unfortunately I doubt he will do much to impact the problem of consistently being in second/third-and-long situations so I doubt this will significantly improve our offense or allow us to be more consistent offensively.**

Well said from a guy, that if we get it going next year, could still be a beast to deal with opposite OBJ.
Remember talking about this possibility a few months ago of landing him, and it just seemed to make sense from both sides...
This will be a completely different O with him on board. Great deal too.

Now let's fix the OL, find a solid DT, blocking TE and go to war with whomever we draft.

Best objection Ive heard all day. Totally agree. Although I dont think the LT is as necessary as a G. We can always help Tackles with TEs, but I want a big angry, ugly mean, fuck toilet of a guard on our right side.
