Serviceable signing. Name of the game is get Beckham into single coverage. This will help, but WR still a big need which they'll no doubt take into draft day.

Truly great player in his prime though. Among the strongest WRs in modern NFL history.

Long gone is a bit of a stretch, he did have 1500 yards and 14 TDs in 2015.

It's quite possible he becomes the third-most productive receiver for this team.

BM had 60-800 last season despite all the QB issues the Jets had. It's possible he's running out of tread, but he's only a year removed from a 109-1502-14 season (14 TDs led the league). And his yards/catch were almost identical the last 2 seasons (and both above his career avg) so I (optimistically) tend to lean towards last year being due to the Jets circus more than a steep decline in BM's ability.

Now, I don't expect him to get anywhere close to his 2015 numbers simply due to Beckham taking a lot of targets, but I think he'll exceed last season's totals across the board. Keep in mind Eli threw for 400 yards less than his 2014/15 totals, so there's plenty of "room" for Shepard to improve his #s and for BM to exceed Cruz's 2016 production.

in his career Marshall had some hiccups but for a guy with diagnosed mental illness what exactly has he done wrong in recent history? Where is the "bad in the lockerroom" stuff from? I can't recall the last time we heard anything "bad" about him. The Jets were a dumpster fire with horrendous QB play which would be the perfect situation for a "bad" egg to lash out and he didn't.

I've echoed the same. Good post..😎

You find out the character of an individual when things are
going badly, NOT when things are going well.
It's easy for chemistry in the locker room, when things
are going smoothly or well. Apparently you haven't followed
his entire career very closely, if you can only point out
the Jets situation last season. We'll see how he acts
with the Giants, I wouldn't have done it.
That is what they can afford, so...

When he was released last week & everybody was on the sign him now mode, I had doubts about his ability to fit locker room wise w/the Giants. After giving it some thought, his talent, his size are a perfect fit & I'm sure the Giants did their due diligence. He's far from over the hill, last year w/the Jets was a cluster fuck w/their QBs. The year before he was a stud when Fitzpatrick had his career year. I think he's still got a lot left in the tank.

It's a massive stretch when you have Petty and Geno starting 5 games (and Fitz the other 11).

Before Petty started playing, BM was averaging 68 yds/game. With Petty, that dropped to 35 yards/game.

68 yds/game would be 1088 yds for the season.

you shouldn't want him to get more than that. If he does, it means that Beckham is having a shit year or is hurt, and Shepard regressed.

My only doubt on this was his off year last season.

But, as pointed out, he's a year removed from a great season. And the contract sounds good.
Very ambivalent about this signing...

...and I say that with the opinion that Brandon Marshall can create havoc for defenses, even though he is no longer in his prime.

I would have preferred the money going to as many FA offensive linemen as possible! Wide receiver is not out #1 urgent problem.

Why the hell throw $12 Million dollars at it?

who does little more on this website than post GIFs and super hero threads, it's perfectly reasonable to recognize/point out that it's uncommon for WRs to excel past 33/34. And tons fall off a cliff at precisely that age.

Again, insofar as it's worth responding to Batman's fluffer.

The signing is fine. It'll take some heat off Beckham and add a desperately needed red zone target. But let's not act like this is a gamechanger like 28 y/o Plax. They still need to target a WR on draft day.
Great Move!

Not all that concerned. Two more(?) drops than OBJ, albeit not sure at the moment how much more OBJ was targeted..

At best, it makes us rather lethal, potentially..At worst, he'll be the big red zone target we've been lacking of late AND he will take some pressure off of OBJ, freeing him up some more..Hopefully

Best FA signing so far
Hot Rod in Florida : 3/8/2017 10:45 am : link
How can you not understand that this is a huge success story. Last year we went wild in FA and fixed the defense. But we did spend a lot of money to do it. Getting a 6 time former pro bowler at a bargain price solves a major need for the third WR. He's the big guy we were looking for and the red zone target we sorely needed. The other WR FAs were going to more costly. He wanted to stay in NY and settled for less to do it. Sometimes, it isn't always about the money. He wants a chance to get to the playoffs and have a shot to go the Super Bowl.

Now that we have that need fixed, we have 3 more areas on the offense that need addressed. We need a dangerous runner and a dangerous TE. We also need a decent OL. We should be in position to land 2 of those in the draft. In the 1st round we can get Howard, McCaffrey, Cook or Njoku. I don't see us taking an OL unless we get desperate. In the second round we can still get a darn good TE or RB. Hodges or Everett at TE or a RB like Kamara, or a decent OL or a QB who slips.

Personally, I kind of like the idea of taking McCaffrey if he falls to us. He would eliminate the need to keep Vereen around as he is an excellent receiver as well as a runner. Since Marshall isn't going to stay here for too long, he can also be used as a WR. His versatility gives him the edge over Howard. I would be happy with either guy in the first round.

It would be great if we can solve our OL problem in FA. Unfortunately, getting a good one is costly. Cutting Vereen gives us a little more to help in that regard. Drafting McCaffrey allows that to occur. Getting a guy like Blount who's the best goal line RB would also benefit us for the right price. Getting 2 red zone guys like Marshall and Blount would significantly improve our TD rate int he red zone.

Imagine our goal line offense consisting of Blount and McCaffrey at RB, Beckham, Sharpe, and Marshall at WR, and Hodges at TE. It would be awfully hard for a defense to cover all of those guys. Blount would make them have to watch the run and the defense would have to account for McCaffrey, Beckham, Sharpe, Marshall, and Hodges if we pass.
One of the most important things here...
arcarsenal : 3/8/2017 10:45 am : link
Is that this team was structured before in a way where if Odell were to get hurt, the entire offense would nosedive.

Losing Odell would still put a huge dent in this offense but Marshall is good enough to still be a WR1 and would still give this offense a legit outside threat.

If Jon Hankins would take 6 million dollars a year, he would be signed already. If Kevin Zeitler would accept 6 million a year, the Giants would do backflips. WR was a need, perhaps not as big as other, but it was a need. And they just got a really good player for LESS THAN HIS MARKET VALUE. I don't see how anyone could complain about that.
#2 WR has been high on my list of needs for awhile now.
bceagle05 : 3/8/2017 10:48 am : link
Eli and Beckham have been the entire offense for three seasons. Now Marshall immediately becomes one of the best #2 WRs in the NFL, with Shepard and Vereen (hopefully healthy) going to work in the middle of the field.
WR is absolutely a need

I will disagree with you all day long. Adding a WR to take pressure off OBJ and SS, as well as one who is a certified threat in the redzone and as a blocking WR, changes the entire dynamic of the way teams played the Giants last year.

Give the TE position to Adams? Based on what? 1 TD? Give me Njoku in round one to team with Marshall, OBJ and Shep. Crazy group of targets!

with Cruz released, Roger Lewis was the biggest WR on the roster at 6'0, 196 lbs. And our startin TE is only 6'2 and not a leaper.

Think about that. We had a bunch of tiny receivers and not one big target. Brandon Marshall is one of the best big WRs in the game and a great possession receiver.

Compounding matters, Eli favors (and errs on the side of) throwing high balls and letting his receivers go up and get it.

This will be huge for Eli and the Giants.

when the Giants/Tri-state area is attractive to free agents, and this is absolutely the case with Marshall. Texas and Florida always have the added attraction of no state income tax, but Marshall loves the Giants so he can stay in the media spotlight for his cause and also still do his Showtime gig. Huge.

He will blow it up this year. He liked winning 10 games 2 years ago, and you could see how last season killed him. He loves the game, and if the Giants can somehow improve the O line, the Giants will win a playoff game in 17/18. Very pumped.

I think Brandon Marshall is a very dangerous receiver who can cause big problems for NFL defenses. But out of all due respect, recognizing this great receiver in the context of Amukamara is confusing to me.
I am sure this was mentioned already
Jay on the Island : 3/8/2017 11:17 am : link
but people need to consider that Beckham will be receiving the double teams leaving Marshall one on one for the majority of the time. Marshall will be dangerous in the red zone and the intermediate range receiver this offense has been desperate for. Now if they add a receiving TE in the draft and upgrade the offensive line then this offense could be special.
This move made the most sense in the entire off-season

Because of his personality and some claims that he's not a good locker room guy, etc.

I figured his history would be the type of thing you didn't want in the NYG locker room.
Wish he was a couple years younger but I'm thrilled
LatHarv83 : 3/8/2017 11:27 am : link
As for the bad locker room guy stuff, from all we can tell that has not been much of an issue at all since Denver. I'm not surprised Marshall wanted to stay in NY to avoid any potential conflicts with another team regarding his travel to tape "inside the NFL" in NY during the week...if I recall correctly Chicago was upset with him for that. I can't hate a guy for having an eye on his next career as that time of his life is coming soon. That's the smart move.
I love this signing!
trueblueinpw : 3/8/2017 11:27 am : link
No way to know for sure, but BM seems like a really terrific young man. He's clearly very smart and he's always been a hard worker and his accomplishments on the field are HOF worthy.

Unless I'm mistaken, Eli Manning is the best quarterback BM will have ever played with during his career. Look at the ridiculous career stats of BM and then look at the tomato cans who were throwing him the ball.
